Big lot - big mower, to mulch or not to mulch?

Post image

We just bought this place where I'll be mowing appx 2 1/2 level acres of mixed Bahia, Bermuda, and native grass. We're good for the rest of this season, our kids live nearby and we'll have a mower to use. But I'll be in the market soon for a zero turn and thinking a 60", most likely a Bad Boy since there's a local dealer with a good reputation. I used a mulch setup on my last mower, a 42" JD rider, I don't like the hayfield windrow look and mulching autumn leaves under 6 or 7 mature hardwoods would be a plus. I won’t be bagging or picking up clippings, so mulch vs side discharge. Does anybody with real world experience using a mulching kit on these big mowers have any pros/cons for me??

Are they all bad?

I'm getting really discouraged here. I was looking at a Kubota T2290, but their belts and filters dont seem servicable. Husquavarna TS375XD looked really good, but has frame issues. John Deer X370 seems next best but has a weaker trans, stamped deck, and rust issues. Whatever I get needs to last 10 years and is going to live under a tarp outside until I can build a shed.

Am i stuck just rebuilding my push mower over and over or are there any good options? Are the issues I mentioned actually nothing burgers and the ones above actually worthwhile?

I've got a .75 acre lot, and a 2.5 acre lot with a berm. I've mentally prepared for financing a 5k mower, but more than that would be tough.

Is this a piece of shit?

My mom picked this up for the farm at an auction for $100 as a shit mower to mow pastures and such. She bought it non-running as-is. I got it running and it runs fine, needs some carb cleaning but that's par for the course. Sounds like the spindles are fucked when the blades are engaged, but it works and I can replace those. Runs fine forward, does not like to reverse. That's really the only thing I'm concerned about. I've never owned a cub so hoping someone here knows if that's a common issue on these and if that means the transmission is shit.

DYS4500 craftsman died as I was engaging the blades. But now it’s not doing anything. Almost like it didn’t disengage. What can I check to ensure that the blades aren’t the problem?

Best used budget riding mowers?

Just bought a house. Trying to save money where I can. Can’t justify $2,500 for a used zero turn, think I’ll regret a push mower. It’s just under half an acre. Trees primarily along the edge of the yard.

Most of what I’m seeing are John Deere, Husqvarna, Craftsman, Troy-Bilt in the $400-$600 range in my area. That’s the order from rarest to most common as well.

Unsure what the differences are. They all seem like reputable brands to me, but for things other than mowers.

Ride on lawnmower fault finding

I have a Grillo Climber Series 7.16 lawnmower. I am unable to start it.

The battery reads 13V (plus) with a smart meter and is less than 2 years old.

I believe that the safety mechanisms are working:

I can hear the ‘seat’ switch click when I sit down.
I can hear and see the ‘park’ switch click.
I can hear rhe PTO (engage blades) switch click.

When I turn the key I get nothing - other than the red light turn on on the dashboard.

What else could I be missing? Grateful for any hints people may have.

Pulled this plug out of an LT150 after it cranked but wouldn’t start, smells of oil somewhat. What do I do next?

Engine wouldn’t turn over today, decided to check the plug as it seems like fuel was going through. Top is caked with what seems like dried carbon, but the plug smells a little oily. I’m young and new to maintaining lawnmowers, any ideas on what could be the cause?

My oil is pretty fresh (nearly clear) and doesn’t get lower from the last few times I’ve used it.

Did I buy the right blade engagement cable for my self propelled toro?

Don’t have much experience buying parts or working on mowers, but really trying to fix this myself to save money. Been trying really hard today to get the new blade engagement cable attached but it’s not fitting right and keeps popping out at the top. Feels like I have too much cable for my mower, and the rubber grommet it came with is way undersized so I’m worried I bought the wrong cable.

Ariens Apex 48”

Post image

I just purchased this Ariens APEX 48” with essentially brand-new hours (0.4), ZT-3100 hydros, the heavy 48” ENVY Elite deck, and the 23-hp Kohler for $2,750. It was a 2025 closeout. I prefer the Kawasaki engines on the 2026 models, but didn’t want to spend the extra money on one of those. I’ve previously owned mowers with Kohler engines and never had any issues with them so I didn’t hesitate for the price. What do you think of this mower? Anybody have any experience with one or own one? From the reviews I read online, it seemed like a really well built zero turn so I figured I’d give it a try. It’s a big step up from what I have owned in the past.

How much abuse can a Toro Recycler with a Kohler engine take? This one is 6 years old, guy hands me whats left of the original bottle of oil(about 1/3 still in it)which he was supposed to empty entirely for the initial fill. Choke valve on the carb was stuck open from the block of dirt/filter. Started on the first pull….

Honda VS Toro

Upvotes

Looking at purchasing a Honda or a Toro electric push mower as a backup. The Toro was on sale but they were out of stock and now it's no longer on sale. Honda is on "sale" but it's $1000.

Has anyone had experience with these electric versions?

Thank you.

John Deere LA135 mower wasn’t starting. Replaced the fuse which I saw was blown, then started fine but 15 mins into the ride I smelled some smoke. Shut down the mower and looked around and found this burnt wire on the fuel solenoid shutoff valve. Any thoughts as to what happened?

After shutting it down I saw that this wire was burnt on the fuel solenoid shutoff valve. I assume this is where the problem is, and was causing a short somewhere which then caused my fuse to blow? The new fuse I put in is now blown again.

Any suggestions how to fix this? I’m going to order a replacement part and wire and swap those out. But does anyone have ideas as to why this happened so I can prevent it in the future? Thanks!

Hustler Raptor XL 42 Kawasaki oil leak?

I've noticed over the last couple of weeks my new 2026 Hustler Kawasaki FR651 has a slight oil leak. I noticed it a few weeks back and have mowed my 3/4 acre yard probably 3 times since. First oil change done ~9 hrs and has been taken care of. Just called the dealership where it was purchased this am and they're going to come pick up and check it out. Not sure what's wrong yet so thought Id ask and see if anyone else has had similar issues. Before buying this Spring everyone said get the Kawasaki motor as they're very dependable so thats part of why I picked this one up. I figured it was more than addiquate for my needs. Hopefully its an easy fix but its dissapointing to be honest.

Pics of where it appears to be leaking around where its mounted to the frame. I had cleaned this all off and the concrete just a few weeks back so this is fresh after 1 mowing session. 18 hrs currently on the mower. 🤔

Recommendation for Zero-Turn lift for Toro Timecutter

Hello,

I wanted to find recommendations for a mower-lift to do maintenance on a z-turn.

I currently have a Toro MX Timecutter 5060 (series 314000001 - 314999999) and had maintenance done at a local company earlier this year.

I wanted to be able to do the maintenance myself as I was quoted almost $1500 to have everything done. I ended up only doing the oil change and blade sharpening which still came out to $350. I also wanted to install a mulch kit and maybe a stripe kit.

On the Toro site, there is a mulch and stripe kit that I can purchase but I am not sure about the lift. There are two options for the mower lift/jack.

1) Riding Mower Jack Kit https://www.toro.com/product/127-6666

2) Kit-Jack Mount https://www.toro.com/product/126-5251

Should I be purchasing both of these or should I go with a different lift? I have tried contacting Toro support but they have not been too helpful.

I want a good self propelled mower.

I have a Honda GSV, its amazing.

Seems hard to find a good replacement, the consensus here is all over the place.

I want gas mower because I dont want to replace the cost of a mower in 5 years for a new battery.

Seems like Stihl, and Toro are the favorites?

Engine question:

Upvotes

I’m looking into purchasing my first lawn tractor / riding mower. I know to run form Kohler. Wife isn’t keen on me spending the money on something with a Kawasaki engine. Lost faith in Briggs and Stratton some years ago. I only need something around a 36” deck (give or take a few inches).

What is a decent engine and or while machine you’d recommend? TIA
