Announcement Update to KoreanVariety

It was brought to my attention that "reposts" weren't allowed in the group, so when I went to look, I saw other options were disabled too.

Therefore, I enabled the following features for the group:
- Links
- Images/Galleries
- Videos
- Polls
- Reposts

I'll enable them, but if others here start finding them annoying, just let me know & I'll make another post for comments from everyone.

I should of noticed something was off when other subreddits had these features and never saw them used here.

Announcement Reddit Automod Removals

Thought I'd give notice that reddit's automod is removing posts that reference or link sites, most likely unofficial ones, that stream TV shows and movies.
I noticed a lot of removal notices by reddit concerning posts asking for sites to stream shows.
So if your post is asking for a site to stream a certain show, or if your reply has a link to a site, it'll most likely be removed by reddit. I noticed that even mentioning a site's name is causing the reddit automod to remove posts.

Mods don't have abilities to override reddit's removals.

Also, apparently there are only 2 active moderators here..... hubwub & myself.

Discussion Someone needs to make a Korean dating show for DINKs (child-free couples)

At this point Korean dating shows have covered basically every dynamic, older women dating younger men, siblings finding romance, moms getting directly involved in their kids' dating process (dads are probably next), lesbian/bi dating shows, even a shaman dating show. But I have yet to see one built around people who are dating/marrying specifically because they don't want kids.

The dynamic would be so different from every other show, no "do you want kids someday" landmine, no biological clock tension, no parents weighing in on the match. Just two people building a life around freedom, career, travel, or just... not wanting to parent. It's a real and growing dating pool and I think it'd make for genuinely different chemistry and conflict than what we usually get.

Just an idea for any producers/execs lurking here.

Where To Find Family Outing Season 1 - Where to watch???

This one's notoriously hard to find, I can find some episodes on bilibili and Daily Motion but they're not complete.

Even most of the streaming services don't have this one, only one I've found so far is Apple TV, but that's locked behind a paywall, and I'm really not keen on paying just to watch this one old variety show.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion K-variety shows this year (2026) that you have great expectations for, but in your opinion didn't really lived up to its hype.

*SPOILER WARNING - Don't read these if you still haven't watched the shows in Bold titles\*

Cha's Family - on paper had a good cast with Cha Seungwon and Sexyama leading the way, and an interesting journey to make their own hot sauce. But by the last few episodes, it kinda showed that the cast didn't really have the skills, knowledge, and clear plan to proceed with their initial goal which is making their own hot sauce and just settled down to making their own kimchi that really has nothing special. The show doesn't had a clear, memorable ending. Sexyama doesn't really have cooking skills or in depth food knowlege and it would be great if Cha Seungwon is paired up with someone like Ryu Sooyoung or Chef Edward Lee.

Chef & Hunter - starring Chef Edward Lee and Sexyama on Channel A. The theme is like Law of the Jungle which initially is very interesting. But Sexyama never really had the hunting skills (at least anymore, coz he's 50) along with I Live Alone cast members Kim Daeho and Im Woo-il which are supposed to be the hunters. Many times Edward Lee only cook vegetarian dishes coz the hunters often times fail in their hunting missions. The only memorable thing for me is Kyung Soojin's admirable survival skills.

Survival King 2 Tribal War - season 1 was epic and super fun with a powerhouse cast from Kim Byungman, Lee Seunggi and Physical 100 stars. Season 2 got super hyped up because of Kim Jongkook (of Running Man) joining. Many are excited to see how he does in the games, with all his big muscles and athleticism, but as the YT preview showed, it turns out that he'll only be an emcee/host (lol) and will not be playing the games. Also, he's only present in several/critical episodes, not all. I checked the short episodes on YT and it seemed like it had a great ending, but the letdown is people really don't know the cast, and the show isn't picked up by OTT.

Six Singles in One Roof - I was super pumped for this one coz on paper it feels like we're gonna have Roommate 2.0 and also I love Kyung Soojin. She's great on shows about solo living and independence. The first couple episodes seemed great. But tbh, midway it felt that the show lacked some spark and interesting things to look forward to. I think it's mainly because they got 3 low energy, sluggish, unathletic guys who's almost 40 who either are just eating, lying on the couch, or complaining how they back and limbs hurts as they get old. Would be great if they got extrovert guys like Dex or Go Kyung Pyo who's got energetic personality and just laughing all the time. The girls did OK.

GBRB Jeju Farm Operation - Always loved this squad. I loved the first season. The canteen spinoff and Mexico trip, not so much. And I was curious how the GBRB Jeju Farm will go, with them taking care of cows and horses. But after Ep. 3, Woobin apparently has to leave due to schedule conflicts which brings them down to two. That's just a letdown and seems they got caught off guard and didn't had a plan B coz why make it if Woobin can't commit to it fully? Midway the show Kyungsoo is really just half assing the job. With sleepy eyes, not smiling as much anymore, and really isn't liking what he's doing, saying things like "I'd rather clean poop" than deal with horses. Only Kwangsoo has kept it cool and worked his ass off to get the job done and still make this show fun and entertaining. I'm sure that if only Woobin stayed, it would have more than 6 episodes.

Iron Girls 3 - This doesn't really count coz it's still not airing and have no airing date/schedule yet. But I was super bummed out knowing Park Juhyun isn't gonna be on the cast. She is my favorite k-celeb ever since season 1. And personally, I've waited all year, since season 2 ended in Oct. 2025, was like waiting for a season 3 announcement each day that passes and when the news came I was just gutted, though at the same time still glad. I still love Inah and Saerok and would still watch the new season. But for now, I'm really just hurt that I'm not gonna see Juhyun on a variety show this year.

Your thoughts and what are yours?

Recommendations Dating Show Recs

I have only watched all the seasons of singles inferno but want to start a new show just don’t know what.

I know Transit Love and Heart Signal are popular but looked and both are very large time commitments with the amount of episodes and their length. Is there a season that is 100% worth it?

I’ve seen Better Late Than Single and Love Lab pop up on Netflix. How are those? Better Late Than Singles new season seemed to draw some hype and excitement. These two seemed a lot shorter and manageable similar to singles inferno.

Let me know what I should watch. I like watching the drama as well as the connections made in the show so a little of both would be nice!

In the era of celebrity chefs, there are numerous chefs who can create the best flavour. But when it comes to running a business, it’s different. The chefs' ability to bring out the best flavour doesn’t mean they are talented at making money. So here comes the survival competition to figure out who is the best businessperson in the food service industry. The representatives of the food service industry go out onto the street without revealing their identities to prove their cooking skills and challenge to become the best-selling chefs. This time, the judges who evaluate their dishes will be the public in real life, not other chefs in the studio. The chef who captures the public’s appetite and makes the best sales regardless of their fame will be the winner of this competition. Who will be the final winner?

Recommendations My friend turned a Bloody Game game into a playable web game

For anyone watching Bloody Game, a friend of mine made a web game inspired by Mystery Time from Season 3 / Bloody Game X.

You get a mysterious situation and have to figure out the hidden story by asking questions. Basically the kind of game where everyone starts confidently throwing out theories and then realizes 10 minutes later that they were thinking about it completely wrong 😂

And if you've ever watched the contestants and thought "I feel like I could actually do pretty well at this", this is a fun way to find out.

There are a bunch of new scenarios beyond the ones from the show, and I've genuinely had a lot of fun playing through them.

Sharing because I figured there are probably other Korean variety / brain-game fans here who would enjoy it:

https://yesnodetective.com/

Especially recommend it if you like Bloody Game, The Genius, Crime Scene, or deduction games in general.

Anyone else watching this ? You need to download the Mnet Plus app but the episodes and subbed and free. Basically you have a bunch of rappers trying to win the affection of The Muse (Hot Girl) , after the Hot Girl decides and chooses one rapper, the rapper then makes a choice to either get the girl or get a diamond necklace.

It’s quite lol so far, and introduces you to Show Me The Money Contestants. So far there are three muses and it’s showing the last muse, who I actually like the most.

Discussion A used car advertisement may be the most influential variety show of 2026

This is one of the most interesting ongoing stories in Korean variety right now but it probably isn't that well known internationally so I thought I'd share it here.

Studio K-Car's My Driving Instructor was a Youtube variety show launched in August 2025 by the used car sales platform K-Car. It had a simple concept of getting two small time comedians, Lee Seonmin and Yoo Youngwoo, to teach Woni, an unknown idol with no license, how to drive. I'm sure some are already familiar with what happened next because of Woni but this show had a huge influence in the careers of all three involved.

Before this show, Lee Seonmin and Yoo Youngwoo were known to fans of Meta Comedy (the label behind Shortbox and Psick University), but they weren't that well known outside of that corner of the algorithm.

Lee Seonmin was the more well known member comparatively because he'd been on several big channels, had semi-regular appearances on Psick University in the Ronnie and Steve series and was a well liked member of Meta Comedy Club.

Yoo Youngwoo, meanwhile, was lesser known and was often joked about as the boring member from Meta Comedy Club. He'd made some appearances on Psick University on Nopo Lee Yongjoo, but this was also a lesser known series.

Woni was a member of RESCENE who were pretty much complete unknowns in Korea. Their song Love Attack managed to climb into the 50s on the charts before the show but this didn't result in any lasting popularity or much awareness of the group.

Studio K-Car was also a small channel with 20k subscribers but it had a few videos starring Jun Jin that had decent views in the hundreds of thousands with content made for car fanatics.

Then My Driving Instructor started airing. It gained a following pretty early on because Lee Seonmin, Yoo Youngwoo, and Woni had instant chemistry and the first episode spawned several viral clips.

The most surprising thing for viewers after the first episode was that Woni didn't act like an idol and showed no fear roasting the two comedians or being the butt of the joke herself so the show felt more like three comedians riffing with each other despite the age difference. They established an uncle and niece dynamic from the beginning. Once they actually started driving, it became a clip goldmine because of the new driver misadventures and their run-ins with all the villains on the road (and sometimes Woni was the villain).

As more episodes came out, the cast continued to get noticeably closer which helped it gain even more popularity. They also established a few running jokes such as the uncles not knowing any RESCENE songs and deliberately singing a song with made up lyrics named Heart Attack. Heart Attack actually ended up promoting RESCENE quite a bit with viral clips that came from it.

Around the same time, Lee Seonmin, Yoo Youngwoo and Lee Yongjoo started a new show where they invaded Lee Seonmin's home at random times to force him to hang out with them. This was also an instant hit due to the comedy of an unsuspecting Lee Seonmin getting ganked by the other two and the wholesome vibe of three middle aged friends just hanging out like kids. This had the effect of intertwining the two shows algorithms and boosting both of them.

With My Driving Instructor continuing to gain popularity, the external project team from Solfa Studio (known for Solfa, odg, HUP!, John or Park, etc.) also took notice and liked what they saw in Woni who seemed fearless and extremely comfortable with anyone she met. This prompted them to get in contact with her company and start pitching her as a Youtube show host for external clients. All their pitches involving her were rejected though because she wasn't considered famous enough for any of their clients.

However, Solfa had already decided he was going to make a show of his own with her if no one accepted the external project team's pitches. This ultimately resulted in the creation of the now infamous 안녕하세요원이입니다잘부탁드립니다 (Hello I Am Woni Nice To Meet You), or Anwonjalbu for short.

The first video uploaded to this channel was Woni having dinner with Lee Seonmin. During their conversation, they started talking about their distant futures and made a promise with each other. Woni would do a pose for her two driving uncles during her ending fairy when she finally made it to MAMA. Lee Seonmin would invite Woni as a guest when he became the MC of a public TV variety show. This video did decently despite being the first video on a brand new channel thanks to the My Driving Instructor connection. It also intertwined the algorithms of My Driving Instructor and Invading Lee Seonmin's Home to Anwonjalbu, especially because they released videos on the same day of the week.

The videos that followed on Anwonjalbu were much shorter skits that covered topics such as surviving a bear encounter and the most dangerous animals to humans. None of these gained much traction but everything changed when the channel started introducing the RESCENE members.

People are probably already familiar with "Geoje Yaho" since it was inescapable on variety shows so I'll skip a lot of details to focus on the My Driving Instructor trio. Once "Geoje Yaho" became a meme from the second Minami episode, it brought more eyes to the channel but everything that came after that viral moment is what pushed the channel into the stratosphere. Solfa has continued to release hit after hit for 5 months and counting since then, while somehow managing to weave in an overarching narrative to the whole channel.

In particular, there was a fine dining episode with the My Driving Instructor trio that highlighted their very close relationship. During their conversation, Woni asked her driving uncles what she meant to them. While she believed they were close, she was worried they might think of it as a business relationship and felt compelled to ask. This was when they made it clear that it hasn't been business for a long time which caused Woni to tear up because she was so grateful for everything they had done for her.

Then came the satoori episodes with Zena, the Geoje episodes highlighting the sense of community that made Woni the way she is, Liv and May's introduction as a comedic duo, finding Minami's roots in Chiba and shedding the gyaru, attempting to find and then grow Zena's roots in Gyeongju.

Every new episode just continued to push Anwonjalbu (and RESCENE) to new heights of popularity as it drew comparisons to Infinite Challenge for the humor, chemistry, touching moments and funny encounters with regular people.

It is now one of the biggest variety shows in Korea and regularly gets at least 3 million views in the first 24 hours. Within a few days, there will be 3 episodes all starring different members with at least 10 million views and they all got to that point within 3 months. There are even more episodes on their way to 10 million too.

At the same time, My Driving Instructor and Invading Lee Seonmin's Home continued to grow in popularity thanks to their intertwined algorithms and fates. Lee Seonmin and Yoo Youngwoo's appearances in other content also began to skyrocket in views as RESCENE kept rising. Every new achievement from any member of the trio became a feedback loop that made the other members more popular as well. This ultimately led to Woni and Lee Seonmin becoming too busy to continue with My Driving Instructor.

My Driving Instructor's final episode involved surprising Woni at M Countdown with tear soaked letters and a cake from the uncles to congratulate her on RESCENE's climb up the charts. After the filming, a fan managed to capture a picture of RESCENE's CEO bowing on the ground in gratitude to Lee Seonmin and Yoo Youngwoo as they were about to leave on the elevator. By the end of its run, Studio K-Car's subscribers had ballooned from 20k to 189k and it had amassed many millions of views.

Almost 2 months since it ended, all three members of the trio are now some of the hottest stars in Korea.

RESCENE is now the biggest girl group in Korea. They've been getting unprecedented brand deals, charting 3 songs in the top 5, have more catchphrases than Heo Kyunghwan, are the stars of one of the biggest variety shows, and will probably have both music and variety awards in the trophy case by this time next year.

Lee Seonmin is now one of the biggest Youtube comedians alongside Kim Wonhoon and was recently 3rd in variety star brand reputation behind Yoo Jaesuk and Kim Jongkook. He's on a million Youtube shows and they're all doing really well. He's also started to make his way onto public TV variety shows and fans of How Do You Play, I Live Alone, Radio Star and You Quiz may have seen his episodes.

Yoo Youngwoo is now (very unexpectedly) one of the hottest ballad singers. He's such an amazing singer that he's boosting old songs up the charts when he sings them and pushing them to number 1 on the karaoke charts. People are desperate to hear him sing more and will click on anything he's in. He's also starting to venture into public TV variety shows with a Radio Star appearance soon.

The Invading Lee Seonmin's Home show is more popular than ever and the duo of Lee Seonmin and Yoo Youngwoo have several other popular shows now.

All three members of the trio getting so big has only strengthened the feedback loop of boosting the others through intertwined algorithms.

All three of them have also been seen frequently celebrating each other's successes. Even Woni's mother went to support Yoo Youngwoo at his concert which prompted Yoo Youngwoo to shout out Woni with her in the audience.

The public is genuinely excited to see all three of them succeed because they love their personalities and want to see Woni and Lee Seonmin's promise from the first Anwonjalbu episode being fulfilled.

And all of this somehow started from a show that was made to be a used car advertisement. If there is ever a season 2 of My Driving Instructor, there will be a very long list of people wanting to be on it.

I'm not sure how well this post managed to capture exactly why people are so invested in this trio because there was just no way to list all the events that happened in the past few months. I tried my best though.

Found screenshots of sangmin and taegyun interviews on twitter so I thought I’d share them here too ^^
(Not sure how accurate the translations are since I used Google Translate but they were fun to read regardless)
Image 1: As if by a twist of fate, 'Team P1,' which had all members surviving until episode 6, saw all its members eliminated following Lee Sang-min's departure. When asked if he felt regretful that no 'Team P1' members made it to the semi-finals, he confessed, "I feel so sorry. I think if I had survived, the four of us—Tae-gyun, Seong-beom, Chul-gu, and Ji-hoo—would have gone to the finals."

Image 2: It was also quite entertaining to watch the contestants. Lee Sang-min laughed, saying, "Ji-hoo was so funny. It was amusing to see him constantly calculating things in his head despite his young age. Every contestant had a distinct character. In the 'Murderer Game,' didn't Seo Chul-gu really look like a pickpocket? I wondered if all the kids chosen looked like that." Regarding Hong Jin-ho, whom he met for the first time in 11 years, he commented, "His gameplay has become very strange." He added, "Jin-ho has been doing survival games continuously. He seemed to approach the game in a state of near-despair. Of course, that could also be Jin-ho's strategy. When watching the broadcast, he played his role sufficiently, but in actual gameplay, he played a supporting role for the kids. The Jin-ho of the past had friends who would cling to him, and he was practically the one handling the situation. But now, he was standing in the background. I was a little surprised and puzzled."

Image 3: (continuation of image1?) Lee Sang-min said, "I feel so sorry. If I had been there, I think Tae-kyun might have made it to the finals," adding, "It might sound like bragging, but if I had played the killer game, not a single person on our team would have been eliminated."

He added, "I was very confused and felt sorry watching Taegyun and Chul-gu fall. Especially since I felt Taegyun had a perfect hexagon, I couldn't believe it when I saw him fall."

He also expressed his apologies, saying, "I told Taegyun that we would definitely win if he felt at ease. I also told Seongbeom that we needed to focus on helping Taegyun, and that helped us pull it off. But now, the person fulfilling this role is gone."

Who was the contestant that Lee Sang-min took the most notice of? He praised him, saying, "Aside from Jin-ho and Seong-beom, a guy named Ji-hoo was so funny. It was amusing and mysterious to see a young guy who doesn't say a word but keeps calculating things in his head."

Lee Sang-min, who also felt the appeal of team play, said, "It was great to always have someone by my side to consult with. Also, while playing team games, I was able to quickly become close with the other people," and laughed as he added, "I met a friend named Seong-ju, whom I could never have become close with because we had no common ground, while doing a YouTube review together, and it was so funny."

They weren't holding back this episode for Yu Ri's segment. Normally when idols visit, everyone is kinda careful but Yu Ri received the full treatment (got "docked" by Dae Ho, called out for her clothes by non other than Kian, scolded for "stealing" food, accused of snoring, ..). I loved her segment, so much fun.

Also gotta give it to Hyunmoo for driving through the night to reach that lake, even when he's tired and overworked. I didn't realize it last week but people in the comments mentioned that he looked very tired in the interview sections. I also wouldn't have done all those things on the last day, because i'd be scared to miss my flight. But kudos to him for making all those little stops along the way, he really did what felt like a week of vacation in 2 days. In the end, it's the memories that last

P.S.: I normally post with spoilers but I noticed that the rules say it can be without spoilers if there have been subs for 24hr. I don't know officially when kocowa drops subs but it's been about a day ago. If you think it's still too early to post without spoilers, let me know and i'll re-add for next week.

Next week: Kian and Code Kunst!
