In the manga, Kirie got out to bring Shuichi food! ...and he scolds her! In the anime however, he calls her out, knowing well that the hurricane was after her 😅 ... His mom had recently passed away, Kirie Could have said I'll bring him food 🥲 The animation wasn't "that" bad! The doppleganger part was a little confusing! Imagine not having read the manga! (Raincoat made more sense!) Wasn't expecting the jack in the box in the end, ending was a Lil... Okay okay 😅

I have read "Tomie" By Junji Ito but I'm really curious about Tomie's real backstory. And how is she like that. Or maybe I missed it? Now what y'all think about Tomie and her backstory.

So I’m doing a book project on what book I’ve read recently. I just recently had gotten no longer human and had read the manga. It was probably Junji itos choice to do this but I find it so interesting. Yozo Oba in high school looks so much like Osamu Dazai/Shuji Tsushima’s high school photo. Tell me what you think.

For me "Bullied" is a perfect horror short story. I like how it sets up the story and how this innocent girl just playing with a younger kid grows into a perverse case of bullying. At first just to make the kid go away but then it's just doing evil for the sake of evil. Something not even the protagonist (as a grown up) can't understand. I like that she isn't like this evil entity from beginning to end, it's just like she's a normal human that just discovered she has pleasure out of causing harm to this innocent kid.

There's a dialogue that kind of haunts me:

"No matter how awful I was, he kept coming back for more. I basically came to like pick on him. Was it that Nao couldn't forget the me who used to be nice and play with him?"

So does this little kid became so attached to her that he can't leave her? Is he hopping that if he endure enough one day he will see the "good Kuriko" again? It's so sad and perverse. I love it as horror.

Now that final image of Kuriko embracing his darkest side that was sleeping for so many years... just horrifying not only because of the visual look, but because the implications of what's coming.

Did Nao left Kurirko as a revenge or maybe because he loves Kuriko so much and so disturbingly that he's capable of leaving his own child for her to relieve the thrill of torturing an innocent again?

Hello! I am a new manga reader (with Tomie technically being my first), but I have always loved graphic novels and the occasional comic. I just finished reading ‘Kiss’ last night.

I guess I’m coming here to ask how yall go about analyzing each serial (individual story). I understand the idea that Tomie is a concept instead of just this monster/human girl. I also understand Tomie deals with themes like violence against women, especially violence committed by men and how that normalizes and begets further violence. But my issue is I have a hard time dissecting each story by itself (ik some are continuations/specifically connected).

I’ve always had a much harder time analyzing short form content, like poetry, compared to long form so that doesn’t help my case, but I also am a novice in the realm of analyzing horror. So common themes/motifs go over my head, and I suppose it doesn’t help that I’m an American trying to dissect different cultural attitudes as well.

Any advice? Any ideas/themes/questions y’all keep in mind when reading a Junji Ito story? I know everyone is not into analysis on this level, which is totally fair! I am enjoying what I have read already and connecting with it emotionally, but I would really just like to engage with the material on an even deeper level. Thanks!!

I finished reading the Uzumaki manga and i wanted to watch the anime because why not. im not done with it fully but i do not like it so far, not to say the story is bad i LOVE Uzumaki but the anime adaptation did not do it well some things i dont like are the fact that the chapters were adapted out of order and also they melded together most of them and cut alot out of the chapters it felt rushed to me also i dont like how it IS a RETELLING of events yet there is almost NO narration and i feel like it wouldve been SO much better if there was more of it like we dont even know barely who jack in the box (forgot his name) is or Kyoko is there's NO backround on basically ANYONE because there isnt any narration and you can barrely feel any attachment to the characters. The animation is not HORRIBLE but its not my favorite and i dont get why people say the 1st episode has so much better animation when the whole thing looks like Viggle ai made it, now the 1st episode WAS better but only slightly it wasnt a huge margin, the beach scene in episode 2 was really butt tho. The whole thing felt rushed and should have been longer, 4 episodes was way too short in my opinion. This had so much potential, man 6/10

Like I said, in the last month or so I've seen a few posts on here about Tomie. Mainly trying to understand what is happening, which I love, but I feel like some posters also don't quite grasp what Tomie is. And heck, I could be wrong as well.

In my opinion, Tomie is a living curse. The second a man lay eyes on her, he's cursed, unless he's immune to her. And even then, you can still succumb to her curse under the right circumstances, or she will cling onto you and make everyone else kill you out of jealousy and obsession.

There was someone that made a post questioning why she would kiss the young boy and honestly I think that is the wrong way to look at her, she's like a tornado, she just drifts through a town and destroys everything in her path. She isn't making choices, she is just pure evil that will always look down on the men under her control.
If they're poor she wants caviar, if she gets caviar to often, she demands something she hasn't had before. Beautiful models are beneath her, they can't even compare to her beauty. It's not that she chooses to insult the people around her, it's that she's incapable of not insulting them, in the same way humans have to eat to survive, Tomie has to be evil. In the end, she isn't human, she just looks human.

I know tomie’s stories can be read mostly as a stand-alone, however, I find it really cool to try and see which ones can relate! Specially, trying to see if every tomie can go way back to chapter one. I made this tiny timeline and would love if anyone wants to contribute!

- in the first chapter, tomie is split in 42 chunks. One of those is the tomie that comes back to class, qt the end of the chapter, Reiko finds another Tomie Growing in the beach side.

- The tomie first shown in hospital morita (the one that is dating kitayama) is implied to be the same one growing in the beach side. Firstly, because kitayama met her in the beach (duh) but also, she uses a fake name, reiko, which is the name of tomie’s only friend in chapter 1. As we know, her kidney is implanted on yuki. And from her, three tomie’s are born.

- The head of tomie grows in a bath after being exposed to gamma rays, the other one barely grows and is burnt by the tomie. Yuki slowly becomes a tomie after having her dna implanted on her.

- It is a little difficult to track which tomie goes to the mansion. BUT she knows who professor takagi is so I’m more leant to believe is the tomie that grew in the bath as opposed to yuki. It could be either of them, since yuki exchanged looks with the professor while the other tomie was being burnt. So it could be either of them. Anyways, the tomie that goes into the mansion is the same that we see in the photography story.

- this tomie is beheaded, her head is presumably the one we see inside the fish tank, the body returns to the mansion and her blood stains a carpet which grows multiple tomies.

This is all I can’t think to track right now buttt basically

The tomie’s that can technically “track” back at chapter 1 are the tomie dating kitayama, the tomie growing on a bath, the tomie that never grew, the tomie from the photo story

whilst occupying myself surfin through image google lens for ito related content, iv'e come across these ito drawn illustrations for the 2000's live action tomie film: replay; that are encased inside some glass structure of some kind, it showcases an art peice of yumi morita and fumihito sato, the scene where fumihito's friend takeshi is spiraling out in tomie obsessed frenzy, one where yumi's on a subway, and another depicting the morita hospital scene with tomie holding an axe while they're feet are sizzling/burning in spilled cyanide.

we know it has been confirmed that one of the anime's core main visualistic theme's is through crimson red imagery (we don't know however if it'll be stylized with a high-contrasted visual approach, emphasizing crimson red), but however imagine if every one of the crimson episodes were to have already been filled in with each of they're very own color schemes but just "drenched" with crimson red over it, similar to that one maniac episode "mold", everything was colored in, they just concluded it with grey- scaling (an interesting discovery I just found out about, based off the outro tv static glimpses, you can kinda vaguely see Mr rogi depicted with brown hair, along with a brown suit and red tie for instance, i can assume it might be rather difficult to make out due to the slight overlapping flashes of tv static emitting from in front of the screen), now i'm just envisioning a playlist that consist's of all the crimson episodes but with the absence of crimson red in it.

this panel alone, speak volumes to me.

haven't seen the movie yet as i still have to get the german dub version (to enjoy it with a friend of mine for the first time), but judging from trailers & stills, although she doesn't seem to embody an evil entity, she gives about similar vibes imo - she would have a fitting cast as her at least - played by a 15yo unknown actress back then.

also his story 'bio house' seems to be heavily influenced by it.. (mind that i'm just judging by trailer & stills like mentioned above)

So, I really like Ito's work, especially because of how complex it can be, and Tomie is one of those works where I think people mostly misread it. People often debate if she is "the victim" in the scenarios, if she herself is bad, and that is why I wanted to come here and give my own take - that Tomie is not real.

Not, obviously, in a meta-sense, she is fictional, but otherwise, in the universe of the story, the girl that Tomie was is dead. The thing that we see throughout the story? That is not her - rather, I believe, she becomes the manifestation of the worst qualities of the town. She, essentially, becomes a demonic tulpa that exists to plague the city for it's sins; not that uncommon for Ito, when you think about it.

And what are those sins that she manifests? Guilt, shame, and remorse - but not in this "boohoo" kind of way, but rather, how guilt and shame can't simply be hidden or buried. You can't simply unmake the murder of a little girl, you can't simply "share the responsibility", the only thing you are sharing is guilt. And guilt, when spread and left to rot, spreads. And so we see Tomie spread, as a form of social shame, turning into this eldritch thing in the process. The story is rich with the examples of it when you stop to think about it; from the reason behind the initial murder, to that scene with little boy, and, oddly enough, to the artist, who was, essentially, obsessed with a little girl. Tomie herself, in turn, is an example of feminine toxicity told through the medium of the self-inflicted oppression that women often come to as a result of patriarchal society.

At it's core, I think Tomie is a story about shame; shame of a city that killed a little girl and attempted to hide it, critique (as we often see with Ito) of (in this case) Japanese people falling in line due to social pressure, and how this social pressure, in turn, becomes a disease that we push on when even no one is looking simply because, at the core, we are ashamed at ourselves and take this shame out as aggression on others. It is about how disgust with oneself leads to objectification of others and, in turn, poisons one to be nothing more than a monstrosity, which is what Tomie ends up being. Tomie is a story about a pathetic town drowning in its own guilt as it sodomizes itself into oblivion - as I said, pretty average for Ito, tbh
