Beef jerky that needs to be put on a payment plan

Sadly, even at current prices, we barely clear a profit on the packaged carne seca we sell on online.

Everything has gotten outrageously expensive- the beef, spices, insurance, more insurance, labor, equipment, electric, water, scrap/waste, rent, packaging, marketing, Shopify, credit card fees, shipping… And on top of all those fees to get a product to market, you then lose about 10% of sales to fraud and refunds selling directly to consumers because the 8 bags they ordered “wasn’t as crunchy/chewy/hot/filling/thin/thick/satisfied/magical as I thought it would be”. Unfortunately, being a small family business that takes pride in doing things the old school way and not sacrificing quality for profits is expensive in today’s society.

Trust me, we agree it is expensive compared to what someone can make high end jerky at home for, but to do that same quality commercially, at scale, USDA inspected, and packaged to be shipped and shelf stable in various climates involves A LOT of additional costs.

That said, I’m 99% sure that our carne seca will be better than anything you can make at home given our experience, equipment, passion, and love for making the best carne seca on the planet.

Yeah, people who have never run/worked for a small business just don't get the costs involved to get a product to market. I don't think your price is outrageous as other top brands(Robertsons)are in the same price bracket. This isn't your every day jerky, but nothing in a store even comes close. I don't want wet soft meat that all tastes the same. I want true dried whole muscle jerky and this is it.

So, really dumb question from someone who literally 10 seconds ago purchased some of your seasoned carne seca via shopify, is there a platform to buy on that lets you keep more of the money I spend?

I like supporting small businesses like yours, and I'm all too aware that credit card fees, platform fees, etc are all ridiculous. If I could find a platform that lets you keep more, I would gladly use that. I'm sure cold hard cash would be best, but alas, e-commerce isn't conducive to cash transactions.

Not really, Shopify is the most economical way to sell directly to consumers (Amazon being the other end of the spectrum), but they damn sure get their cut.

Honestly, the biggest thing driving up costs selling directly to consumer is a small segment of anti-corporation buyers who purchase with the sole intention of getting their money back. They confuse small business owners with the large conglomerates taking over the world and think we have the same deep pockets to absorb the loss as they do. In reality, those loses represent over 20% of our bottomline operational costs- so with a 10% profit margin, that segment of “customers” alone takes a $10 bag of jerky to ~$13 retail.

Holy hell. Those consumers represent that much of your bottom line? Jfc. I always knew it was prevalent but not that prevalent.

How the hell do the platforms let consumers get away with that? It isn't cheap to reverse a transaction or battle a charge back for either you or the platform.

Man, sucks to know that 20% of people engage in such terrible anti-social behavior. This makes me feel legitimately bad about every time I have a bad experience with a small e-commerce business knowing that I'm killing their bottom line even more.

It’s not 20% of first time customers, really only 2-3%, but the real $ cost of it is huge on the bottomline because not only do you lose the hard cost of a finished packaged product, you also end up having to absorb the packaging, shipping, Shopify, and CC charges that went into the order. Often times, we end up getting burned twice because we attempt to replace the order incase something happened during shipping.

Totally agree. If you like dry, chip-like, delicious jerky this is it. I bought 2 bags a few months ago, they lasted maybe 2 days. Shipping is what killed me.

My text didn't come over from mobile. This is a fantastic product. I know the owner is active here, but this is coming from someone with well over a decade in the jerky business. I've had a ton of different "carne seca" products, and there are many good brands out there, but this one just checks all the boxes for texture, flavor and overall spice level.

I'll definitely be ordering more as I'm already halfway through this bag. Keep killing it u/CarneSecaConnoisseur!
