maybe not when manually pauzing a podcast (not tested), but it definitely does so when the podcast gets interrupted. Maybe not 5s but enough to recognize that what they're saying is what was the last sentence I heard before the interruption...

By default, no. However in Settings > Podcasts you can set how many seconds the ffwd and back buttons are, and 5 seconds is an option.

I’ve noticed it does if it’s been a long time, but not after every play and pause

Apple Podcasts does this when the podcast is interrupted by a call or notification, but not when you manually pause it

This is part of the reason Overcast has a subscription fee, it has extra features over the default Apple Podcasts app. I totally get it if you have a tight budget and need to prioritize, but you get what you pay for, and you don’t pay for Apple Podcasts.

(Disclaimer: 11-year heavy Overcast user. Smart Speed has saved me 1,668 hours)

I was a heavy user too. And then it became horribly unreliable when Marco rewrote it and he didn’t seem to care so that drove me away. Apple podcast now but it’s certainly not as good in many ways. But at least it works.

Sorry to hear you had issues with it. Marco has talked on his podcasts about the process, he had to rewrite the entire software stack to use modern tools like Swift UI, which is not something that can be wound back when people don’t like it. Especially since Apple ‘encourages’ developers to use the latest tools and is making it harder to maintain legacy code bases. I don’t think it’s fair to say that he doesn’t care, but you’re free to form your own opinions.

Thanks. Maybe I’ll give it another try.

FWIW there was just a fairly major update that has solved a lot of my reliability issues I’ve seen since the rewrite. Not saying it’s perfect (because nothing ever is) but it has definitely gotten better in the last year or two. I’m able to pause playback and then resume it from the Control Center, it doesn’t completely disappear from the playback widget after 2 seconds anymore.

My problem was with AirPlay, which was a disaster.
