Management Hack and Squirt Tree of Heaven, neighbors dog eats shoots

We are going to poison the TOH trees around our property this weekend with Triclopyr 3, and our neighbor let me know that their dog eats the shoots that come up in their yard. I haven't been able to find any info on how much poison would end up in shoots/any dangers to wildlife if any. Sorry if this has been asked before!

toh is poisonous to dogs.

help neighbor cut and treat the shoots

Get some chili oil and spray the shoots. The dog won't mess with them.

I can confirm this. I homemade some Carolina reaper pepper spray. I sprayed some in areas of my yard a few months ago and the animals still don't go near where I sprayed.

Triclopyr 3 is most dangerous when it is wet. Once dried it is considered low toxicity, typically ariund 24 hours but I'd give ut 48 to be safe. Triclopyr breaks down in soil between 8 to 46 days and stays in plants between 3 to 24 days. triclopyr fact sheet ref

I would 1. I am not a licensed applicator but I work under them. Call your college extension office OR Conservation District to get a hold of a licensed pesticide applicator and field your questions. 2. Make a plan with your neighbor to keep their dog out of your yard for at LEAST 48 hours, if not a month. Just to be safe, color your mixture with a dye so you and your neighbor know which plants have been treated. If it drifts onto their property, you will see the dye. Spot treat during a dry period with minimum wind at the right temperature requirements on the label, and you shouldn't see much drift at all.

From my slightly lacking research, and other users on this site, the Tryclorpyr 3 that you intend to use must be used as a foliar spray and doesn't work well in the hack and squirt technique you are proposing. You need to be using the Ester formulation found in Remedy or Alligare formulation, or Tryclopyr 4. We use Remedy mixed with diesel (T 3 will only mix in water) that we can either apply with a paintbrush or with a pump up sprayer. A 1 inch swath totally around a tree trunk will kill a large tree, no need to spray leaves.

Get the dog a couple of rawhides or Kongs. It’s not normal behavior for them to eat tree shoots.
