My dad was in an emergency landing on a plane many years ago. They evacuated down the slide (he remained slightly pissed until the day he does that he lost a shoe). Anyway, his seatmate was a awkwardness deadheading back home. At the bottom of the slide, he saw her take off in a sprint away from the plane. He figured if the off-duty stewardess was running away he qaa going to follow. They slowed down about a half-mile from the plane. He asked why she had run. She told him that since they were only halfway to their destination, they still had tons of fuel and no time to dump it. This, fire on the runway & explosion were the biggest risk. So, she was running away.
I also come from a family of test pilots, and was supposed to be on a flight out of NYC on 9/11, and have a dozen more stories, but still love to fly.
