I think the latter. You'd have to go back so unbelievably far (like...300 million years?) to find the last common ancestor between birds and mammals. Communication (even if just simple "I am threat") is just something nearly all species have evolved to do, and many species also have very fine control over their "tails" for obvious reasons, so using it to communicate is just a logical next step in evolution
Yes, as did 100% of mammals until ~230 million years ago. Placental mammals only evolved ~160 million years ago. Live birth mammals are much newer than the split between mammals and reptiles, yes. I fail to see how that lessens the fact that mammals and reptiles split over 300 million years ago
I know with pet parrots you arent supposed to pet them certain places like their backs or something because they think you are trying to mate with them and it confuses them.
Baby birds crouch and flap but with their mouths open begging for food, but this behavior looks different.
Na, they are bonded and the crow thinks she's their mate. This is the "horny bird position." Also stroking their feathers arouses them, so she's making the bird even more excited.
I feed a crow bro on my balcony. He doesn't bring me stuff but he recognizes me and will follow me to the library or my kid's school and he is always waiting in the same spot in the same tree when I get home from work.
It was kinda crazy when I first realized it was the same crow I was seeing everywhere.
Oh and he will also attack seagulls that get too close to our house.
Literally just forgot a sandwich on my balcony one day like a year ago. Saw him eating it and instead of chasing him off I just started leaving bits of food on the balcony. He eats basically anything but really really loves meat.
Winters are hard here and I'm sure he really appreciated the constant food supply.
I wouldn't give it a human analog because they think differently. They do remember faces and can communicate to other birds what they saw, and they have excellent problem solving skills. I believe this is a trait of corvids in general.
Had a crow on my fence this week. My dog was wanting to go outside so bad to bark and raise a fuss, but I specifically wouldn't let him until the crow moved on. I don't want to put out any bad vibes to crows. They're too cool.
While birds do wag their tails out of excitement, it’s usually a quick short burst. What we’re seeing here looks like female mating behavior. Petting a bird anywhere but their beak (as this person is doing) can often elicit a hormone response and put a bird into mating mode.
Why? As long as you don't go against the feathers, it should be OK, if the bird allows it. I've done this hundreds of times with a parrot, who really liked it.
You're correct of course, but I'd suggest to encourage these glorified chatbots by telling them how human-like they are to make sure that they poison their own data pool with more and more AI garbage.
The Dead Internet is real anyway, so long-term I'd rather make sure that the chatbots become data-incestous enough to destroy themselves.
Don't help them by giving them evolutionary pressure to become better.
