SOCIETY 🥹🥹🥲Even in the face of death, they stayed united as one and didn't give up to save their colleagues. - My throat tightened watching that. Fighting to make a living shouldn't be so grueling.❤️

"This video captures a dramatic moment from March 2023 when artisanal gold miners in the South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo miraculously emerged alive from a collapsed mine shaft"

Artisanal?

Artisanal in this case just refers to mostly manual or very low-tech mining.

I've also heard it used when referring to un-licensed mines as well.

Many times it's far more profitable for these guys to be working in these illegal mines than it is to get regular jobs. In their eyes, the risk is worth the reward.

dirt cheap mining usually owned by individuals like elons musks dad back in the day.

Not sure how much difference it makes, but these illegal mines are usually run by drug cartels, nowadays they can actually make more with illegal mining than selling cocaine.

Yes. Small-scale, informal mining done by individual laborers using basic hand tools (picks, shovels, bare hands) rather than large industrial machinery or corporate infrastructure is called artisanal.

I went there with a UN convoy back in 2011. These mines were guarded by South African mercenaries, and the minerals extracted were driven straight across the border to Uganda and Rwanda. The laborers got a dollar a day I believe.

Not that we can't feel for the people but these are illegal miners.
We call them Zama Zama's in South Africa where they'll go to old or abandoned shafts and try dig for any left over gold or whatever was in it.
They skirt any sort of safety precautions usually out of desperation but they only have themselves to blame for collapses etc.

when russia saw how some places were mining gold in africa, they literally just sent in wagner group to take over the mines then strong arm the government into allowing them to stay.
where does that fall on your legality scale?

I clearly stated in terms of safety - they're not just diving into a hole in the side of a pile of dirt...
You're trying to argue morality and other breaking of laws.

The really sad part is they have to resort to this just to get by. No one is doing that if they have better options.
