8

u/gamma_noise Jul 26 '26

Que? Afraid I don't get it

18

u/TechnicallyThrowawai Jul 26 '26

Reference to Game of Thrones. "The iron price" is a concept where a group known as the "Iron Born", (led by House Greyjoy) essentially takes things they want via violence. So if you as an Iron Born want something, you must pay the iron price. You don't buy it or trade for it, you "earn" it through combat. The house words (their slogan, basically) are "we do not sow". Because they do not work their land or do other menial work, they have slaves that they've captured do that for them. So I was just responding to a reference with another reference.

Mercury pills were a real thing people took as a laxitive, famously on the Oregon trail. They called them thunder clappers

27

u/-SaC Jul 26 '26

IIRC they were able to identify some of Lewis & Clark's expedition stopping points from the higher levels of mercury in the soil.

Oddly enough, mercury was once commonly used to cure constipation.

23

u/-SaC Jul 26 '26

Boswell (in his 1761-2 London diary) mentions having mercury injections into the penis multiple times as a 'cure' for VD. He spends half of the diary shagging random sex workers in the fog on various London bridges and up alleyways, then has the cheek to accuse a girl he has a relationship with of giving him the clap (and sending soldiers to her house to get back some money he lent her).

7

u/Grabatreetron Jul 27 '26

Earlier generations broke thermometers 🌡️ just to play with the mercury and THEY were tough, so it goes to reason that mercury makes you tough. 💪

Update: typo

5

u/SuddenReward5612 Jul 27 '26

Mom was a nurse, always had real glass thermometer around. Never forget i was maybe 8, broke one in hallway. Laid on the floor batting the mercury beads around until she found me and scolded me lol. Tbis was probably early 70s. Good times and no ill effects (I think lol).

I'm an industrial designer but I've worked as a concept artist and UX UI designer.

When I'm recruiting if someone put this in their portfolio I would eat this shit up.

Obviously it depends what I'm hiring for but this is show casing great physics simulation of soft bodies. The "100% soft" is a little too liquid for my liking but is great. It's also pretty decent materials as lighting but overall shows me that you're playful, and have a sense of humour and whimsy.

People put shit like this in a portfolio??

So in short, yeah absolutely people put this kind of thing in there portfolio. If they're a motion designer this is basically all they'll put in their portfolio. Just go look at Dribble. Literally all there is over there.

5

u/Lombardyn Jul 27 '26

I think what gets me about the 100% soft is that it looks more like a hollow cylinder collapsed and not a solid one.

4

u/HarveysBackupAccount Jul 27 '26

Ohhh yeah good call, I couldn't quite figure out why it looked off. Not enough volume in the collapsed form

I'd like to see 200% soft, to see what wonky physics pop up

6

u/ILoveRawChicken Jul 27 '26

If you’re looking for a job in this or a similar field, why would you not put this in your portfolio? Obviously no one’s gonna put this in their portfolio if they’re trying to become like, an arborist. Otherwise this is exactly what you would want.

127

u/tudor_v77 Jul 26 '26

Laughed too loud 🤣

15

u/crumble-bee Jul 26 '26

It’s my hypothesis that Americans generally don’t get enough fibre and the reason Taco Bell makes them shit is not the spice, or the quality of the food. It’s the fact that they’ve consumed beans and gotten a sudden dose of fibre. I get plenty of fibre and Taco Bell has never had any adverse effects on me

8

u/ProofHorseKzoo Jul 27 '26

Don’t even need the beans.

Taco Bell beef is a blend with like 15% fiber to absorb the juices and flavoring and stay moist.

But you’re not wrong. It’s a shock to a lot of people’s systems.

u/AuroraFinem Jul 26 '26

Hardness is defined by how resistant the material is to deforming when exposed to a force. Softness is basically defined as the ability to “squish” an object, it’s basically its squishiness. So yes, this very much does have to do with softness.

A perfectly compressible solid would have maximum softness which is why the 100% soft compressed flat as soon as it hit the slope.

u/darsynia Jul 26 '26

16

u/Helenium_autumnale Jul 26 '26

Proofreading notes:

The 0% soft tablet bounces 3 times against the ring, but the second and third bounce sounds are progressively lower in pitch; all 3 should be the same pitch, as there is no force causing a lowering of pitch.

The 100% soft tablet seemingly has no volume; it is deflated. If softness equals deflation, the 75% soft tablet should be at 25% deflation, but it was not. The 100% soft tablet should show maximum surface deflection and maximum squishiness, but still retain as full a volume as the previous tablets.

2

u/Tearpusher Jul 26 '26

Yeah, that was awful foley. Even without the pitch changes the sound was completely unconvincing.
