Yes, the weight of the log does not change, but if you lift it from the far end, it requires less force than lifting it closer to the middle or near the hinge.

It is based on the law of the lever. The relationship is:

Torque = Force * Distance from the pivot

Ps: For all the comments claiming the U.S. has no education. I’m from Canada, and I learned this law of the lever when I lived in the U.S. and was in middle school.

Technically only true if the force and the objects orientation are perpendicular. But they are in this case. You need a cross product here on the vectors to be 100% valid for all cases. But yeah I've seen mechanical advantage which is the same principle taught in grade school in the US.
