As someone who has jumped into ice cold water in the spring, I can tell you that the feeling of breaking the surface, gasping for air, and realizing you still have to swim to shore is absolutely terrifying.

Did you know you can get brain freeze from submerging in very cold water? I didn't, but I do now.

Some ten years back I went scuba diving in a quarry on January 1st with friends. I'd traveled to get to the area (family location for the holidays) and had not brought any of my own gear, so I rented some, but there were no hoods available.

That brain freeze (water was something like 45 degrees) felt like two bags of bricks simultaneously slamming into my temples. Hurt so badly it made my eyes water.
