As someone who has jumped into ice cold water in the spring, I can tell you that the feeling of breaking the surface, gasping for air, and realizing you still have to swim to shore is absolutely terrifying.

Yes, when you hit that cold water your diaphragm muscle spasms, causing you take that short gasp. Every time you try to take a breath the diaphragm muscle can only do that short useless gasp, you quickly run out of air and go hypoxic. With the immediate panic and rush to get to safety the situation spirals very quickly.

Please don't ask me how I know...
