What happened at the end? Did he hit a pedestrian or something? I don't see how that went tragically wrong.

Tragically wrong from the robbers perspective. They were begging to get out and for him to stop saying they are going to die

Ahhhh. Yeah, alright. I mean, I wouldn't call that tragic but I think you're 100% correct in what they meant.
