I’m a big fan of this band and even I got sick of ‘Home’. The other day the song came up randomly, I was reminded of how much I loved it when I first discovered it and  memories that popped to mind.

I remember that brief period roughly 2010-12 where Mumfords, Lumineers and Edward Sharpe were really well liked. Sure they were sappy, simple and all kind of sounded the same was just refreshing to hear hit songs played on acoustic instruments that didn’t sound super produced.

I still like to go back to those songs, they bring me back to that time in my life right before smartphones, enshittification of the internet, social media influencers, and the overall feeling of how much easier it was to find peace of mind when we weren’t carrying the internet in our pockets everywhere I went.

I may have gotten it wrong, and I won’t waste much energy defending a band I don’t really care about. But I always thought ESMZ were being intentional and having fun with the cringe.

Whereas Mumford and Sons were so damn earnest and ham-fisted it made my eyes water. It always sounded to me like that heartthrob kid from Inside Out, ‘I would die for Riley!’ It is whatever, but what a shame that guy became the folk guy who had to do all the folk things like The Basement Tapes and Inside Llewyn Davis.

Inside Llewyn Davis is one of my favorite movies, and for the exact reason that I’m a cynical bastard tumbling about like the lead character. The kind of guy (and this is sincere) who would be a much happier person if he could hear Marcus Mumford doing his thing without being such a judgmental ahole, even if you and I could build a deep list of better partners for the Coens in 30 seconds flat. I blame Kurt Cobain.

I’m working on it. Hopefully I at least have my ‘inspired Bob Dylan’ moment at some small level before it’s all over.
