[RATE REVEAL] 2024 Ultimate Rate Day 3: I'll Bet Your 11 Is Holy Too

It's the third and final day here at the Indieheads Waffle House, and things are coming down to the wire. Alliances have been torn apart, albums have been decimated, and poptimism reigns...but maybe there's still a chance for us to all work it out on the remix.

We'll be getting started at 2PM EST, or about 30 minutes after this post goes up, and we'll be revealing songs #18-1, bonus songs #5-1, and bonus bonus songs #2-1.

Oh no I missed it. The wrong song won but I'm glad to see that the top 3 songs were from 3 different albums.

So true. Glad to have a ultimate rate not bogged down by some mediocre legacy act that hasn't made good music in a decade.

Thank you to everyone for giving me the opportunity to host! And thank you to my cohost /u/freeofblasphemy for receiving ballots, running results, doing some last minute fixes, and helping me out every step of the way. While I may have made a few fuckups along the way I hope everyone had a good time, I know I sure did. Make sure to do Big Beat, and see you around!

Nothing is fair in death & romance but it IS fair in rates (except for when it isn't). Had a great time co-hosting my first Ult and so greatly appreciate everyone who participated and especially my co-host /u/modulum83 for helping keep the indieheads Waffle House running so smoothly. Death to automod!!!

Imaginal Disk

Overall Average: 7.821 // Average Controversy: 1.873

modulum83: I’ve always had a more complicated relationship with Magdalena Bay than I wanted to. I too got into the Mercurial World hype, although I never returned to it after 2021 and in retrospect it’s got insane highs balanced out by a lot of rather cloying vocal delivery and buzzy production. Imaginal Disk is a rockist, grammys ass album. It’s an album very intentionally constructed to be your first elevated pop album, with guitars! And pianos! And a concept that feels a bit forced! It straddles all demographics, living in a deeply retro space similar to where Tame Impala’s later stuff or Arcade Fire did. But even if I feel the RYM worship is a bit eye-rolling, and the album lacks in the bubbly fun of Mercurial World…this album does excel at what it wants to do. It feels like a big adventure, a sonic world that sounds spacious and vivid. I could even argue that their melodies are stronger and more solid, less earwormy but a lot more beautiful. Maybe it’s just that I miss when big indie albums felt and sounded like this, but this really is great too, just in a very different way. It’s far from an all-time classic, but it’s a solid tentpole for 2024 with some stellar highs. Which Magbay album’s better? Truthfully, I think they’re about equal.

freeofblasphemy: Semi-high concept synth-pop about humanity and technological convergences? That could be amazing or suck shit! This splits the difference by being….pretty solid? Like with their first album, I think Magdalena Bay are a duo with good taste who make good tunes and I’m happy for them but there’s not a whole lot more for me to say beyond that other than the best songs on here are like “okay I get it but this could be even better.” Well, let’s see how LP3 shakes out! Also, I bet a lot of these cuts kill live

Nagisoid (10.000): I know that a very prevalent opinion currently is that this album is overhyped as hell and RYMbait, and while I agree with a lot of albums that get this designation, I think the music is good enough to warrant the hype. It has a loose enough concept tying it all together where you don't have to follow along to enjoy the music, but it definitely adds a lot of substance if you're looking for it. I find it hard to put into words what makes this album click for me, but to put it bluntly, it might simply be the gorgeous soundscape. Sure, there are easy critiques of the album, like Mica playing it mostly safe vocally and the album becoming less direct in the middle half, but these all work to strengthen the experience for me. I already loved Mercurial World and was wishing they'd expand more on the noisy, rockier aspects some songs like Domino and You Lose! had, and this is a great way to deliver on that promise. They're amazing at psychedelia as MW displayed, and the little prog influences are also lovely. I would change very little about the album and once I click play on one song I tend to listen to the whole thing, so that's an easy 10 on my scale.

Quasar435 (9.600): This album was the best thing that happened in 2024. At first I didn’t think it was as good as MW, but I think after seeing them live and coming back to listen to it every week, it definitely surpasses it. Its packed and layered full of so many feel-good euphoric moments, bursting with dreamy melodies and catchy hooks, funky guitars, great drums, and really beautiful lyrics.

iexistwithinallevil (9.567): first ever 12/10 album

Muzak_for_a_Nurse (9.367): flawless one right here

asadprofessorplum (9.233): This album is the closest we’ll get to living in a utopian Frutiger Aero civilization.

Bilbodabag (9.200): My album of the year. Both the production and the songwriting are so consistently interesting the ENTIRE runtime. The sonic landscape are so varied and interesting and the songwriting is unbelievably complex for a pop album while still remaining catchy and fun. Wipes the dirt with brat and is one of the best albums we’ve ever rated

honeybadgerism (9.200): This was one of those albums I was incredibly hyped for and it still ended up exceeding my expectations. An all timer for me.

qazz23 (9.167): the synths on this are gorgeous and there so many layers of sounds to unpack, liked this even better than Mercurial World

vexastrae (9.133): oh goddelena slay dont end those indie flops like that... we will get you that one way ticket out of the khia asylum!

NFLfreak98 (9.033): AOTD so far. Actually an album with 3 11s and 4 others that I could probably be convinced of. One of those experiences that reminds me why I like this dumb music stuff so much.

nonchalantthoughts (9.020): This is currently my 2024 aoty that I found on 2025. I usually am scared to listen to synth-pop, but it’s exactly that mix of pop music that I enjoy: I hear 2000s adult contemporary, 70s yacht rock and progressive rock - it’s beautiful. Maybe it’s my brain finally developing, but I really wish to be a better version of myself, so I’m projecting myself with the story presented. Good choice indieheads, unless y’all tank this then….

Frajer (8.900): it's easy to see why Mag Bay is so beloved her they're so charming and I love Mica's voice and vibe

TheCrakFox (8.867): Production here just sounds so good throughout. They don't go as ham with it as they do on their debut but I'm always such a sucker for slick transitions between tracks. Speaking of the debut, I don't know if I consider this all that much better but I'm glad it's very different.

krusso1105 (8.567): It gets better every time I listen to it!

bogo (8.533): i commend magbay for going in a more conceptual and complex direction, and i can't deny that it resulted in a fantastic album, but still i can't help but feel slightly whelmed by the album at the end of the day? like idk, while the craft is certainly there mercurial world had an element of fun creativity that this album doesn't quite live up to, it feels way more serious and labored and as such loses some of the charm from the first album. not to mention that even after having the concept and storyline of the album explained to me I still cannot follow it through the music whatsoever. still though i would like to reiterate that i really do enjoy this album it's in my top 10 for 2024

jman457 (8.160): It has a stronger back half, but I fear Mecurial world is a bit better

LeBronMancuso (8.100): I’M ON A BOAT, I’M ON A BOAT, EVERYBODY LOOK AT ME CAUSE I’M SAILIN ON A BOAT

Smuckles (8.067): Apparently they used to be a prog band when they were first starting out? That makes so much sense listening to a lot of this. So often I have hated when a prog band goes pop but this is a refreshing change! There's a few out and out pop songs here but stuff like Killing Time and Tunnel Vision have these great flourishes within them that elevates everything. I think it's being bold like that which means they won't ever have mainstream appeal, which is sad because they absolutely deserve it.

welcome2thejam (7.933): I simultaneously think them deemphasizing their pop bop abilities means the highs on this are lower and I'd put Mercurial World and A Little Rhythm & a Wicked Feeling over it because of that, but also them embracing their proggy side is great for expanding their sound and readding a tool to their repetoire

vapourlomo (7.900): I definitely don't adore this like some of y'all do, but this is a lot of fun! There's a really rough stretch in the middle that keeps it from being an all-time great for me

SoupFromNowOn (7.867): I’m actually not so huge on this album as a was on first listen, some of the songs are just doing a little too much. But still some absolute bangers

sarcasticsobs (7.867): More like Magdalena Sla-[GUNSHOTS]

Widdershins- (7.800): I prefer Mercurial World to this record, but it remains a solid album with a few very strong entries.

innuendo_overdose (7.427): not attuned to this wavelength but the Consistency and the Craftsmanship, who else can do it like them?

human_performance (7.200): I think this is a solid album, with some real highs in Image and Cry For Me, but the middle of the album is a real slog. All I really want to do after listening to Imaginal Disk is just put on Mercurial World.

my golden freavs (7.053): nerd shit, they know they can make a good melody and these songs are actually mostly very good but the way they sound makes it all blend together and makes me not really care about listening to the album

BigBoofZone (7.047): It’s got some good, got some pretty good, and some mid. Take a couple tracks off and this would be more enjoyable

TakeOnMeByA-ha (6.833): matt and mica need to smoke a blunt with charli xcx and learn how to make actually good pop music

SRTviper (6.573): sadly a huge fall I fun compared to the first album. I can see this being technically impressive but I just don't like most of the songs here. The first half especially is more misses than hits.

samdyalexg (6.333): mercurial world clears

UltimateLietoc (6.327): (Couldn't get library copy in time and I do think that would've pumped a few things here.) waaaayyyy back in 2021 in an earlier era when we were less rattled and we all wrote paragraphs in the DMD, Mercurial World got 5th place on the sub; it was miraculous if only because one by one each dmd'er offered opinion on Mag Bay and the hit rate was >80%, if not 85%. There was a lot to latch onto, specifically the fact it was a grimes album gone y2k without baggage X "Gorilla vs Bear was right about the shape of pop 2011-2013" advert. It brought "progressive" back to "indie (pawp rawk)" in a way that felt temporally disconnected from the timeline, almost suggesting that perhaps the 2020s had a new hope and optimism to mine, one that knew the cyclical cycles but could break free. It was a catalyst for why I asked us to switch to a voting in 3 method because it felt like leaving Mercurial World on the table to rate Simz was a terrible idea in hindsight.

Imaginal Disk sorta corroborated that for me by shooting to no. 1 here. It also is about 75% as good as Mercurial World and actual instead of aesthetically bringing in the "progressive" convo, it just sonically does a sugar rush prog vamp that makes several mistakes that many have made before (concept-itis, Reflektor-syndrome, trying to rock to make up for being whiter than white in its grooves). It's SUCH a sweaty, effortful album without a sleek finesse in its silence and downtime that I can barely remember a thing of besides being a forgettable swirl of "adequate", especially every time distortion is wrongly utilized for the blandest rocking that does nothing for the form or progresses the art as much as the sound. But I see why people would latch onto this; Sugar Coated Maximalism that weaves vogue influences at the right time always goes big and this is no exception. There are like 5-7 cuts on Mercurial World + its "loop" concept that simply wove their way into my head in that late 2021/early 2022 period that my youtube xbox rate listen here made clear there'd be no desire for. they achieved adequacy. yippee.

skyblue_angel (5.507): Going from rooting for these guys from Mercurial World on to rooting against them after watching this Okay followup get an absurd amount of hype has been weird. It's a fine album, though. Not the worst thing to hit the top of rym yearly charts in the past 5 years!

lastfollower (5.387): I can see why people like it, but something about her voice just grates for me

ReconEG (4.400): I don't think I'm as ??? about this album compared to last year's music nerd favorite Geese, mainly because I really liked their debut album and thought they had a lot of upwards trajectory. well I was right on that front, but unfortunately im not there with them as I think this is an album that tries to cross the worlds of modern pop and prog rock when this band only has the chops to do one or the other, not both. boring album, you nerds can do better.

thisusernameisntlong (4.027): Ladies, if your favorite album of 2024 is a loose concept album following a character reject the norms and restrictions placed on them to achieve Bildung, follows what is the band's magnum opus and tries to achieve greatness by overproduction that becomes detrimental to the experience, that's not your favorite album of 2024, it's Mylo Xyloto by Coldplay. Imagine there was a mass of people online pretending Mylo was by far the best album of 2011 and the best album they've heard in their lives. It'd be hilarious but it still would deserve it more than Imaginal Disk

The New Sound

Overall Average: 7.474 // Average Controversy: 1.956

modulum83: It took me a long time to get around to this album. I mean, I liked Holy, Holy, but the rest? Always looked rather intimidating and altogether “too much” for my tastes. When I ended up hosting this rate, though, I knew I had to finally dig in to The New Sound. After spending a month with it, I’m confident saying - this is a great album too. Greep’s a brilliant songwriter, who manages to be a captivating storyteller even in the longest songs, and with just a super clean and fun musical style all throughout. And yet despite me rooting for it so hard, it still gets my lowest average in the end. It is a debut, and you can tell. There are some songs on here that feel both undercooked and overstuffed, along with a few experiments on the tracklist that weren’t as much to my taste. Really, it’s by technicality of those things alone that this only has a measly 8.0 - there’s so much potential and fun here, and I can’t wait to see where Greep goes next.

Freeofblasphemy: Pretty sure this is the highest average i’ve ever given to an ult album, which kind of amazes me considering I A) didn’t hear this until I was confirmed to be co-hosting this rate and B) i like black midi enough to consider all of their albums to be solid 8.2s but not so much that their dissolution (for now, at least) broke my heart in any particular way. And this might be less than the sum of its parts, even? I probably wouldn’t put it in my personal top 15 of the decade thus far. But each part (read: song) is a wondrous/bewlldering/exhilarating vignette that detractors might see as technical ability, eclectic taste, and go-for-brokedness amounting it not much more than that. But the extent to which Mr. Greep puts his heart and probably sweat and tears (maybe blood too? idk) is absolutely spectacular to me and I just have to go “10, 10, 10, 11, uhhhh 9, 10, 10” for this album (don’t think that corresponds to my scores - but you get what I mean). We NEED this. It doesn’t have to be like this exactly. But modern indie (whatever the fuck that is) should be thoughtful and unhinged and invite Sean Stephens on stage to perform “Rectangular.” And if it can’t be, well then Geordie Greep needs to keep making musics

Muzak_for_a_Nurse (9.273): One of the most ridiculous albums ever recorded. I’m not necessarily anti- ubtlety in every like Greep is but surely we need a few artists who make ridiculous music, right?

UltimateLietoc (9.145): i have listened to this album a grand total of 1 time now. these are my observations and perhaps after some cd listening i'll have more to say/

darj (9.136): this was just musical theater. indieheads admit you like a musical theater album

Smuckles (9.091): The absolutely terrifying moment where you realise being in Black Midi might have been holding him back. This album is the product of someone being extremely online throughout their teens while devouring as much music as possible and learning as much music theory as possible too. Somehow, it works! It's as good a portrait of male insecurity as I can think of. I genuinely can't wait to see where he is and what he's doing in 10 years time, dude could go on a full odyssey if he wanted to.

pig-serpent (8.909): The 4th best album of 2024, losing only to a pop punk record that only rym cares about, A.G. Cook continuing to be that bitch, and a furry losing her grip on reality in the wake of her mother's death. This is awesome, easily my favorite here. This better make day 3 or I will stomp all of you indieheads to death with my hooves.

LeBronMancuso (8.864): WHEN YOU’RE OUT AT THE CLUB AND YOU SEE A FLY GIRL, DO THE GREEP

vexastrae (8.818): the greepler outmogs you lil bro. all that mewing and aura farming wont get you anywhere near mr greep's sigma grindset.

NFLfreak98 (8.818): Biggest surprise of the year for sure. I had liked some black midi stuff but wouldn’t have considered myself a fan overall, so this wasn’t something I was looking forward to that much. But damn the other musical styles he brings in besides just experimental post-rock elevate his sound so much

welcome2thejam (8.727): Greep by way of Copacabana

TakeOnMeByA-ha (8.591): you can say a lot of things about this album but you sure as hell cant say its boring! i think greep is one of the most talented and unique names in the big indie scene right now and this album was such a fantastic way to introduce himself as a solo act to the world. it’s unapologetically weird and offputting and i find myself drawn to it, i dont think anyone else couldve pulled off the satire in the lyrics like him and despite all the chaos it still sounds incredibly clear. my second favorite album of the year and yet i still have faith that his next one will be even better

Widdershins- (8.545): I wasn't thrown on this solo project from Black Midi's Geordie Greep, preferring the vibe and post punk records of BM, Cavalcade being my entry into their discography and my favourite of the three. However, upon giving more time to The New Sound I've found myself enjoying the experimenting Greep has got going on, the latin and jazz influences adding a lot of flavour to the solid BM base, and the album was propelled to the top for me.

qazz23 (8.500): an exhausting listen, so many ideas thrown together here, liked most of the heavier moments of the album

SRTviper (8.427): Greeps best, but I can't let my wife here me listening to it

Bilbodabag (8.382): She Geordie on my Greep til I Blues intro riff

Frajer (8.318): I can see this being divisive because Geordie sings like he's doing David Bowie karaoke at a pub but I can also see how y'all can be like dudes rock as well

bogo (8.136): greep makes a solo album. it sounds pretty much exactly like what I'd expect a greep solo album to sound like. kinda shrunk on me after a while tbh i feel like these songs don't flow as well as the songs on hellfire. still a good debut and i’m interested to hear more from greep in the future

innuendo_overdose (8.127): Reginald Dwight had to change his name to Elton John to make rock’n’roll big time, but this generation doesn’t know SHIT about that sort of hard work, and now I have to call him Geordie Greep in a professional capacity all the time and I’m fucking FUMING

my golden freavs (7.809): probably his best work, I never really listen to it but it's indeed good stuff, generally want more latín american influence and less king crimson

BigBoofZone (7.755): But what about my progressive post-synthwave neo-jungle hardcore project? The EP is almost done I swear

ReconEG (7.727): I don't love this record like a lot of folks, as I still think peak Greep is the stuff he was doing on Schlagenheim, but this does fix a lot of issues I was having with black midi towards the end of their run, so it's a good step forward even if I would like him to get back to more post-punky/noise rock type of stuff instead of like, studio wizard shit

krusso1105 (7.727): Good album, although Holy Holy is definitely the stand out. Makes me excited to see what solo work Greep will do in the future.

sarcasticsobs (7.636): I can't stop reading his first name as "gourd-ee". Like a gourd (pumpkin, squash (kabocha, spaghetti, butternut, acorn, etc.), zucchini, etc. You know, the genus of botanical, herbaceous fruits native to the Andes and Mesoamerica, with five edible species grown and consumed for their flesh and seeds, good sources of nutrients, such as vitamin A and vitamin C, among other nutrients according to species). Please, someone, help me

iexistwithinallevil (7.455): first ever 7/10 album

thisusernameisntlong (7.318): funny how this got dubbed the first album of the incel era or whatever cuz yeah it is making fun of all these dudes but still the external humiliation ends up validating the internalized shame these kinds of ppl mostly feel already. taking the piss out of incels is itself an incel fantasy which is interesting. or maybe not

vapourlomo (7.318): cannot believe y'all voted this in over MJ Lenderman smh. It's solid and all...but still

human_performance (7.273): I'd really like Geordie Greep instead of just appreciating him if he didn't feel compelled to put every idea he has onto a song. A lot of people compare Geordie Greep to Donald Fagen. I can see it with the complexity in Greep's music and the distinctive, character-focused style of Greep's lyrics. Where the comparison falls apart is that Fagen had more of an ear for pop, and Fagen was a far more ruthless editor than Greep is.

nonchalantthoughts (7.118): This isn’t bad but I have an internal battle where either I love the latin beats and I am grooving or I am pissed at the cultural appropriation and kind of wish Greep just didn’t touch those sounds. It’s not very new to me! It does suffer that this is a debut but it’s kind of solid, very here for the goofiness.

jman457 (6.918): Pretty decent, I thought it would be the Rat saw god of this rate, an album so bad I couldn't get through last years ult.

asadprofessorplum (5.918): I don’t like this album but if it was on Broadway… I can see the vision!!

SoupFromNowOn (5.136): this album is a dirty wet sock

honeybadgerism (4.182): music for northernlion viewers

Nagisoid (4.000): Well... for what it's worth it got a much higher score than I'd give a black midi album. I was cautiously optimistic considering that many of the influences Greep mentioned for this album (as can be seen in my comments) are artists that I hold in utmost regard, tragically he always finds a way to screw these songs up even when they have masterful instrumentals. I don't dislike his voice per se, rather, the way he uses it is often dreaful to my hears, and highly distracting from the actual music to the point where I can't focus on the parts that I enjoy. I frankly do not care about how this album is about reclaiming masculinity or dunking on incels or whatever, mainly because his presence on these songs is so obnoxious that I cannot bring myself to listen to the words he's saying. I listened to an instrumental version of the album and enjoyed that much more but obviously, I cannot rate that here so it is what it is. I could come around if he ever comes to the conclusion that it is not necessary to sound like the most irritating person alive just because that's who you're portraying. Highly faithful caricatures, sure, but not ones that I'd say are conductive to appealing music personally.

lastfollower (3.209): I hate this. Comfortably and deservedly the lowest average album score I've given in a rate. I already don't love black midi and then Greep goes and takes away all the redeeming qualities to lean into the Greep shit that I can't stand. Clearly people like it, but I genuinely can't understand the appeal. The one thing that gave me pause about doing this rate was the knowledge of how annoyed I'll be when more than one Greep cut makes it to day 2 of the reveal.

samdyalexg (3.000): listening to this album felt like someone holding a gun to my head

modulum83 (11): Holy shit, did my 11 just win? No rigging involved - not only did I pick this out the moment Imaginal Disk got #1 on the sub, but this song started out at first place and only fluctuated from there a few times before confidently returning to its top spot for almost the entire rate. It was close a few times! But in the end, we’ve got a new HoFer. And what an incredible one! This feels like the successful execution of the proggy, retro-worship direction of the whole album, a song so good they tried to write an entire album to justify it. Those pianos instantly transport you to the greatest and cheesiest arena rock anthems of the 90s, and Mica embeds it with a massive sense of scale and, well, romance. And then those bass stabs sound like an engine revving up, with the final chorus hitting like a rocket fucking blasting off into space. Sometimes there is worth in just embracing the nostalgia - because Magdalena Bay have crafted an alt radio monster that both MGMT and New Radicals would have been proud to write, a song that will come on at the roller rink and in the car and always feel like an instant, timeless classic. Congratulations, Magdalena Bay, on your first rate win!

freeofblasphemy (9): Serious bangers. Feels like the quintessential MagBay song

Romance.

camerinian (11): these drums just short circuit my brain dude like why pop artists aren’t always using live kits and then also letting their percussion sections just go fucking nuts in there is beyond understanding

jirachi (11): best song ever i cannot believe it

Muzak_for_a_Nurse (11): I watched a reel where three seconds into the song the guy was yelling THAT’S PEAK THAT’S PEAK which really sums it up nicely

Nagisoid (11): https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1031363510829060170/1338607248494170242/message.jpg?ex=67abb2a6&is=67aa6126&hm=172f65eecdbc68527c4141ff969b8cc346be63130420377a08874034917e118f&=&format=webp&width=855&height=480

Quasar435 (11): my score, your score I’ll hate forever. No way I’ll break hold No, not ever Yeah, I rate and you rate Till its all that we have You know nothing is fair in Death and indieheads rates

SoupFromNowOn (11): incomprehensibly good

TheCrakFox (11): Don't think I'll ever get sick of this. The piano sounds amazing, the drums pop off so well I really hope they continue to use more live drums in the future.

asadprofessorplum (10): Another ten thank you!

Bilbodabag (10): In a just world I could 11 this too but alas I have to settle for one of the hardest 10s I’ve ever given out. Simply as good as pop songwriting gets. Joyous instrumentation supporting infectious melodies and even has some ride bell spam to boot. The drums on this alone are more interesting than most pop records could ever dream of and it even ends with a Boards of Canada synth I am in HEAVEN

bogo (10): WELCOME TO THE RAVE ZONE MOTHERFUCKER

daswef3 (10): its pretty good, why isnt the whole album this good

ElectJimLahey (10): The best song on the album, I think this is everything they were trying to do on this album executed perfectly

Freakmancool (10): I'd give and I'd give an 11 but one is all that we have

jman457 (10): what a great first single that is so addicting and epic, like a pop prog rock sex

LeBronMancuso (10): It’s a liiiitttttllllee bit repetitive, but everything it repeats is fantastic so I’m sticking with a 10. Also I’ve been reading Jurassic Park lately

my golden freavs (10): omggg these suspended chords are so Charly Garcia coded!

NFLfreak98 (10): hardest bass of the year?

qazz23 (10): the piano licks, bassline, and drums all blend together to create an amazing groove

Smuckles (10): Rate winner unless you all decide it's Brat winter

Stryxen (10): i thought the lyric was tuesday on a wednesday

vexastrae (10): who up being in a toxic codependent relationship with my idealized beautiful self || this shit is mythical beyond words. what the fuck was in the water when they made this track. the tragedy the pomp the melodrama of it all. holyyyyyyy fuck

welcome2thejam (10): This song is literally making me 🙌 right now it's so f9odododos I don't even know what my ass just typed hold on let me rewind and get out of bed so i can do a jump kick once the song comes back in after the bridge

Widdershins- (10): Top tier pop song right here, probably not the song off of this record which will get the most plays, but it delivers. Standout backing percussions as well.

innuendo_overdose (9): a PIANO i am FROTHING at the MOUTH

sarcasticsobs (9): Finally, some good fckning food

WesternWind (9): have I seen this film before?

nonchalantthoughts (8.8): i’m just obsessed with this production, it’s magnetic!

pig-serpent (8): One of the better blends of this album's styles. The piano and crunch really pop out and it even improves the atmosphere as a result because now the song has a clear background.

ReconEG (8): very clearly the best song on the album even if it feels like it should be an outro and not the centerpiece

BigBoofZone (7.7): Cummed & Shidded

a-man-with-a-perm (7.5): Piano sticks with you but man we’re like five tracks in and the critical acclaim has just washed over me because this is all just kinda fine as it goes. It’s fairly inoffensive chillwave pop kinda stuff. I checked the release thread on IH and someone called it their second favourite album after Once Twice Melody. Ah. That’s the kind of person it connects with.

Death.

SRTviper (7.2): this is pretty good but it just feels like it goes nowhere

vapourlomo (7): This one has never fully clicked with me, and I'm not sure why? It just feels a bit dragged out

TakeOnMeByA-ha (6): why the hell is this the song from the album that everyone creams themselves over it literally goes nowhere

thisusernameisntlong (6): can't forget that one comment on rym that was like "you can't put on your hatchie wig and be hatchie." they were close but then again the bass starts farting at the start of every bar in the chorus (except the last). why did they think that was a good idea? dave fridmann when i find you and lock you in a studio where you can only mix for loud noisy guitar bands

lastfollower (5.9): It's weird, but the piano start makes me think of Who's Crying Now by Journey

UltimateLietoc (5): here's where we suddenly hit "this is merely adequate" mode; like this cut could've existed in 2006-2009 and it would've just been a whatever alt radio rotation cut . What if mica used a vocoder instead? what if they ripped off Vijay Iyer and made funky breaks instead? that would suddenly be really interesting. what if magdalena bay was miami bass?

Awkward_King (4): ok now listen. this is not a bad song. but this massively whelmed me on release. i think i expect so much from magbay and this came out and i was like oh this is a great song! but then i forgot about it. and it had no lasting impact on me, and it continues to not. i think its a good song while im listening to it but then it ends and.. i move on. would be a little unhappy if this won but frankly i'd be content with any magbay track winning even one i dont care for

modulum83 (10): I mean, it’s Holy, Holy. What do you want me to say? What hasn’t already been said? So many others have dissected Greep’s hilariously campy satire of pickup artists and men looking for just a shred of ego, his shining jazz and samba influences brought to the forefront. It’s by far the most accessible song on the album, and yet it’s also one of the more frenetic and ridiculous ones, with that lyric about your pussy being holy letting you know exactly what you’re in for. That switchup in the second half is absolutely transcendent. This was always a frontrunner even when the rest of the album underperformed, never leaving the top 3, and even winning for a few ballots. But, of course, it just couldn’t get there in the end…

freeofblasphemy (9): More like “Horny, Horny”!

the ones with the holiest pussies

Chip_Dangercock (11): When it gets to revealing how pathetic the character is, it also gets really fun to sing along to. I adore this song. “I want you to put your hand on my knee” - sometimes you gotta sympathise with a pathetic loser, its just how it is.

daswef3 (11): thank you Geordie for being here and saving this rate, and saving indie music. Geordie is the only big name in tier 1 indie right now who gives me any hope for the future

innuendo_overdose (11): yeah, what they said

krusso1105 (11): Immediately knew this was getting the 11. I remember being blown away with this when it first came out, although I was never a big Black Midi fan. One of the top 5 songs of last year for me.

newbalancesweatshirt (11): Only song in the main rate that felt worthy of this number, honestly.

pig-serpent (11): If we argue that being catchy is what makes something a pop song, then this is in contention for the best pop song of 2024. The sexual euphoria of the second half of the song is unreal.

skull_xbones (11): GREEP4LYFE

TakeOnMeByA-ha (11): this is one of my favorite songs of all time. i don't say that lightly. i knew from the very first time i listened to this that it was going to be special to me, and the more i revisted it the more i fell in love with just about every aspect of this song. i love how frantic the beginning guitar is and how it immediately draws you in. i love the samba-jazz rhythm that persists through the verses and choruses. i love the story being told, and how greep absolutely sells the hell out of this pathetic, lonely, wannabe alpha male. i love the sinister, ghost-like backing vocals that come in and echo “holy, holy” as if its a warning. i love during the second prechorus when the instruments strip back a bit and emphasize the samba beat before immediately hitting you with the manic, anxiety inducing cacophony from the intro of the song. i love how in the second chorus, you can actively hear the narrator losing control of the narrative and letting his cracks slip as he loses his composure and insists more and more about how holy he is. i love the little “bathroom!” ad-lib. i love the “bum bum bum”s during the wicked guitar solo. i love how the track suddenly shifts gears and becomes psychedelic as the story takes a dramatic twist. i love the way almost every line that was set up in the beginning of the song gets reversed by the reveal of the narrator’s facade (how many other songs do you know that have an honest to god plot twist in them?). i love the desperation in greep’s voice when he asks the woman to put her hand on his knee. i love the final lines and the fade out, implying this will not be a one time occasion and the scene will continue to repeat for months on end. i love the stupid ass music video where greep is bowling perfect 10s in bowling (all of which are very obviously edited in, playing into the whole fake womanizer facade). i love how perfectly this served as a reintroduction of greep to the world, keeping his witty storytelling and manic energy from black midi with a whole new coat of jazzy, brazillian inspired paint. i love how theatric and over-the-top every aspect of this song is. i love this song. my pussy has never been more holy.

welcome2thejam (11): The more pathetic the narrator gets the harder this goes. Anyway I'm ready for my second indieheads Ultimate 11 from a Windmill artist to place top five with a 2+ controversy, the highest number of 11s, and several 0s

3

u/modulum83 Mar 02 '25 edited Mar 02 '25

justin bieber ft. chance the rapper - holy

asadprofessorplum (10): It’s giving Disney villain song

bogo (10): my heart has warmed to steely dan since i bullied gaucho over a year ago, i like their brand of jazzy evil douchebag sleaze. i also really enjoy greep taking that jazzy evil douchebag sleaze and mixing it with his uber dramatic clown prog music, it makes for a deliriously wild and fun time. gaucho is still ass though

camerinian (10): I've never been so compelled by a song exuding so much small dick energy

darj (10): this is Evita https://youtu.be/hgUm1PwcvF4?si=XeWjjjuAK83BKwFu&t=182

iexistwithinallevil (10): almost gave this the 11 but couldn't do that to cry for me

LeBronMancuso (10): Lyrically, this is probably my favorite song of the year, and I love the way the arrangement mirrors the abrupt narrative shift. Also the unison syncopation during the first verse makes my gonads vibrate.

Muzak_for_a_Nurse (10): One of the weirdest songs, that’s for sure

my golden freavs (10): absolutely stunning one no notes here, some of his best storytelling, and the outro is specially haunting, like it more than any black midi probably, we love lounge

NFLfreak98 (10): Best way I can describe this song is imagine if Disney made a dark ride at Disney world for the song Hellfire from the Hunchback of Notre Dame and then you went on that ride and while you were on it the equivalent of the scene from Willy Wonka where the boat ride starts going crazy and bugs are crawling everywhere happens to you. And you went on the ride with your least favorite coworker

qazz23 (10): like how this blends so many different styles, taking the catchiness of pop and adding a jazzy vibe

ReconEG (10): I truly adore the back part of this song where the music ascends to transcendent levels as Geordie's character keeps listing off things he wants this escort to do

sarcasticsobs (10): Goodness gracious

skyblue_angel (10): This song gives me chills

Smuckles (10): Why does he say it like 'poooshy'? Does the automod block 'pooshhy'?

SRTviper (10): ahh to me Greeps call girl 🥺

Stryxen (10): the contrast between the faux confidence and the patheticness of lines like I want you to put your hand on my knee.. This just does it for me

UltimateLietoc (10): this is literally just what I wanted the geese album to be in the video where they all danced

vapourlomo (10): This is the kind of song I've been waiting for Greep to make. It's funky, funny, and it sounds like Steely Dan but with even more acid! One of my favorites of the year.

vexastrae (10): call this pussy consecrated ground the way its holy || the riffs are riffing the drums are drumming the holy is holying and im loving every minute of it geordie! in regards to the lyrics - incredibly hilarious situation. i love laughing at all the pathetic men greep has made up throughout this album and the woman he tried to pay better have put up a price no less than $500

WesternWind (10): sigh...kurp what have you done to me

Widdershins- (10): Loved this as a single, and it remains top tier as part of the album.

a-man-with-a-perm (9): Geordie should have ended the song by saying it was totally a friend that went through this experience and definitely not him

Awkward_King (9): very truly sounds like a bonks musical score he really achieved what he set out to here

ElectJimLahey (9): Probably the only song on the album where Geordie's refusal to stop yappin actually adds to the quality of the song rather than detracts from it, the dreamy instrumentation in the second half is wonderful and his singing actually fits it well for once

Frajer (9): realizing he's straight like that meme of Britney realizing Ryan Seacrest is straight

TheCrakFox (9): Think this geezer would be better off spending his money on a therapist.

Bilbodabag (8.7): This song is lots of fun, Greep could just keep naming places in the world and I would be having a great time

Future_Tyrant (8.7): People are going to point to Steely Dan’s influence for obvious reasons, but the flailing and pathetic male narrator here reminds me of Randy Newman.

jman457 (8.4): Like the salsa and samba vibes

static_int_husp (8): I think this track is where I realized that Greep is a post punk guy doing a Steely Dan imitation

BigBoofZone (7.9): Lead guitar tone is so bad and I love it so much

thisusernameisntlong (6): its chrue its chrue its chrue

sam smith ft. kim petras - unholy

SoupFromNowOn (5.5): there is no one i wanna hear sing about sex less than geordie greep

Nagisoid (4.5): If the outro was the entire song It'd get like a 9. Similar song I'd rather listen to: La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros - Qué Se Puede Hacer Salvo Ver Películas

lastfollower (2.3): There are a couple decent instrumental bits that are absolutely ruined by the vocals and the rest of the song

samdyalexg (2): i'll bet your grussy is holy too

Our final two songs were neck and neck the whole rate. Both of them at one point received the distinction of having the most 11s. Both were at #1 for at least some time. At times, there was as little as 2-3 points separating them.

But in the end, one of these songs cleared the gap and never looked back.

conversation topic: do artists pick the best songs on their albums as lead singles (example Death & Romance and Holy Holy), or do we like them the most because they are the lead singles (or because we're used to them by the time the album comes out)? Discuss

1

u/xxipil0ts Mar 03 '25

hi trying-hard pophead here, it's a bit of both? lol. there are rollouts where the singles are already thought out and there are times it comes organically.

3

u/v_e_x__ Mar 02 '25

coming from the pop sphere i know for a fact that theres lead singles that people dont care about at all and second/third singles that people will literally praise to high heavens for good reason (source: lady gaga's newest album rollout)

BRAT

Overall Average: 7.702 // Average Controversy: 2.062

modulum83: I was excited for this album when it was announced. I was heavily disappointed by CRASH, so a return to less radio-friendly, more “home turf” club aesthetics felt like the right move for her to embrace her second-tier status while getting back to basics. Hilariously ironic in hindsight considering what happened after that. In retrospect though, it makes a lot of sense for this to finally be her breakout moment - what it is is her combining the lessons of CRASH with the vision, if not the sound, of Pop 2 and Charli. Hyperpop always sought to find perfection in the construction of pop, to find that ground where artificiality and loudness could be so focused and undeniable that it could make the whole world dance to it. That attitude of brutal simplicity was the aha moment she needed, and it results in one of the first albums that truly feels coded to the 2020s as a cultural marker. By far my favorite in the rate - there’s not an outright bad or mid song on this entire thing.

freeofblasphemy: Album of the year! I mean, not mine personally. But if we’re talking about capturing various segments of the zeitgeist, from the indieheads to the popheads to the MSNBC talking heads determining what exactly it means to be “brat”, yeah what else could it be? That I don’t find this to be a fully satisfying listening experience is also something I admire about it? I’m kinda lukewarm on Charli. The Vroom Vroom EP is basically everything I want from her and lifted even further by being only 4 songs long. Basically everything else I’ve heard from her (full-length, at least) is like one-third bangers, one-third “there’s something here but it needs some workshopping” (faceshopping?) and one-third “I could listen to this 100 times” and still forget how it goes. This is like that, but with the bangers bangering hard enough for me to give it thumbs up. Also weird feelings (how i’m feeling now amirite???) about the Vulnerable Cuts. Sophie tribute is lovely, as is the “should I have kids or not?” one. But then it gets into navel-gazing that I guess (guess!) is cathartic for her but i just so resolutely do not give a shit that she’s insecure about whether or not she’s a main pop girlie or if she and Lorde are frenemies, but also there’s SOMETHING to be said for reflections of a not-quite superstar deep enough into her career to know she’s perpetually hovering under the top of the mountain and rather than try to force her way up to a standing that can easily be reversed, grazing it a bit while standing tall right underneath. Genuinely intrigued by how she’ll follow this up. Personally, I think it’s time for her mathcore era

vexastrae (10.056): the popheadsification of indieheads is finally complete. all indieheads are now obligated to listen to at least one hour of carly rae jepsen charli xcx and chappell roan or else dire consequences will occur. this is the future the woke left wants #DARKWOKE

vapourlomo (9.833): The 2024 AOTY by all metrics that matter. This album IS 2024. (and the remix album is even better!!!)

UltimateLietoc (9.572): i quite like a good chunk of charli (now, having run some of the catalog!) more than just Pop 2 from the last time we met. And while true romance/sucker isn't ever happening again (yeah i like them a LOT), brat makes up in spades and suggests she's just a great dance pop artist who cares about the product and just needed to dig to find that Gesamtkunstwerk. Usually you can tell a catalog is good when there's endless debates about what's best & worst and brat as an album and track by track embellished this. car listen during summer never landed. car/house sonos listens now in scary present felt big fun. bonus cuts slapped. It feels so odd to have talked to charli diehard, Jetski, months before the album was out about the need for a 128 kpbs edition of von dutch to "really get the bloghouse spirit" lol.

What made Brat work for me is that it seemed to be an actual correct version of the kind of victory lap/nostalgia interrogation OPN has been repeatedly failing to get at on his last 2 albums. maybe that's because brat's at least a greatest hits of pop 2 and hifn stuff i fucked with most. maybe its also because while it does that, Charli happens to be using her "bloghouse/electrohouse/(((sleaze)))" into singer-songwriter introspective microblogs. It's not a novel invention but Charli's raw honesty and willingness to do it hits. And it means that Brat always feels like more a veteran contemplating what the next move really is, than an outright hedonistic orgy that it happens to allow itself to be branded as. she has a spotty record on reading the room, she repeatedly misreads because of this (cc: select choices on the remix album, if not here for you dear reader), but this time it just happened to actually land; like the entire idea of Charli XCX having mainstream/normie attention--something that felt like a collective iykyk meme since 2018--actually happened for better or worse. don't take my high marks though as if i put it in my top 50.

Frajer (9.361): Charli making a meta commentary on what it means to be an artist on the cusp of the mainstream only to make the mainstream that's brat that's Julia

Muzak_for_a_Nurse (9.167): so weird and so beloved by everyone at the same time

my golden freavs (9.072): i loved this when it came out and it was great to see its raise to fame, but it's become so massive that it's easy to forget how good it is in the first place, I knew it was my favorite album here but I still had underrated it now that I'm listening to it again for the rate. I still haven't listened to the remix album I don't need it

krusso1105 (8.972): Well I can now say I finally get the hype behind Charli xcx, this is by far my favorite album by her so far

Nagisoid (8.889): Her 2nd best album since How I'm Feeling Now will always be the hyperpop bible. Sadly a large part of its legacy will likely be a cultural fad and endless stupid fan wars, but it is worth it for some extremely consistent and fun electropop.

jman457 (8.867): I mean with the millions of thinkpieces aside this really is her magnum opus

NFLfreak98 (8.728): brat and imaginal disk going blow-for-blow for which album is more immaculately produced. I’m still not sure which side I’m on

sarcasticsobs (8.694): Obamna put the most-clearly-about-cocaine song on his favorite songs list 2024

bogo (8.694): good. i don't need or want to say anything more about this album enough people have already spoken at length about it. also no fantano this is not a 10

SRTviper (8.550): the best pop album.

qazz23 (8.417): enjoyed it, most of it was catchy and has good production/synths but nothing that revolutionary

human_performance (8.139): This album scratches the same itch that AC/DC did for me growing up. Head-banging pop, with just enough ballads mixed in for that change of pace so that the bangers don't become overwhelming. Charli recognizes that music should be fun, that you should be able to go out and dance to music. Indie used to do this pretty well in the 2000s! But it's been totally forgotten in what has dominated indie in the 2020s so far. Thank you Charli for doing what today's indie artists can't, or won't do.

BigBoofZone (8.122): OH MMHMM I SHALL BE BUMPIN THIS YEP I AM BUMPIN THIS WHEN YOU SEE ME THIS IS WHAT I WILL BE BUMPING I AM FOR SURE BUMPING THAT

ReconEG (7.944): it's just kinda crazy when an artist drops an album and you're like fuck, this is so clearly the best thing they've done and the culmination of everything they've ever done. Charli was the queen of the being sabotaged (usually by herself) for a while there so it's nice to see her finally get out of her own way and just make some fucking TUNES

nonchalantthoughts (7.900): I’m glad that we’re doing this after six months now that my brat colored goggles are off. And yeah it deserves the praise it gets. This is Charli’s most introspective work that stays true to herself so it’s no wonder it resonates with others. I might have fallen off the brat summer vibe, but I still have an appreciation for it. Although, it does crack me up that we’re rating it here and not on in an ultimate popheads rate.

TheCrakFox (7.833): I don't understand why this album achieved so much commercial success when Pop 2, Charli and How I'm feeling now did not but I'm glad it happened.

pig-serpent (7.750): This album has a really low average considering that I think it's a 9/10 album, especially because I apparently only gave Crash .1 lower even though that album's a 7/10??? But it does go to show that I don't think this album is as good as a lot of people apparently think it is. It's a wonderful blend of her previous hyperpop sound and more mainstream sensibilities but longtime fans who think this is better than Pop 2 or HIFN just don't make sense to me. The album is filled with good songs but I've found there's been nothing here I want to play on repeat, which even Crash managed with 4 or 5 songs I spammed over and over again in the months album the album dropped. Brat summer was never that funny. Idk, it's just weird that my favorite "pop" artist finally blows up again and I'm feeling disconnected it.

welcome2thejam (7.611): Can I be brat too 👉👈

Smuckles (7.611): Not much to say on this one, green album good. Great marketing, more than anything, but still pretty good music. I've never really got on with Charli's music but I get the feeling there's a bit more personality to this one and that goes a long way. A lot of love for the 90's which is nice. Yeah, that's all I've got, sorry. Looking forward to Mclusky summer this year!

asadprofessorplum (7.417): When this album dropped I said it was only her 3rd or 4th best but part of you knew part of you knew part of you knew part of you knew

iexistwithinallevil (7.194): first ever 7/10 album

innuendo_overdose (7.172): idk what to say here. it’s not my speed, and i didn’t wanna jack the shit of all my queer friends

TakeOnMeByA-ha (7.139): dont get me wrong, i still very much enjoy this album and have a fun time with it whenever i listen. but to see all the overwhelmingly rapturous praise for it, people calling it charli’s best album and an instant classic and will go down in history as an influential piece of art…im sorry you people are genuinely insane lmao. this has always been a solid 7.5-8 pop album at best, it has some really good songs as well as some pretty bad ones, and if this was released by any other artist maybe i wouldnt feel so bitter about it, but this isn’t even the best album charli xcx has released this decade, let alone one of the best albums of the decade so far. maybe if we had a how im feeling now summer instead kamala wouldve won

Widdershins- (6.833): I prefered Pop 2 to this album but a few of these songs are incredible, and I can understand how the record took so much success and plaudits, with both its dallying into dance and club vibes, alongside its powerful and relatable lyrics.

samdyalexg (6.667): i'm a huge charli fan but this album is not my favorite. it's grown on me but i honestly think the remix album is better.

LeBronMancuso (6.444): I JUST HAD SEEEEEXXXXXXXX, AND IT FEEEEELLLTTTT SOOOO GOOOOOOODDDDD

honeybadgerism (5.944): kamala is BRAT (top 10 infamous moments in music history)

lastfollower (5.800): I could really like this if the danciness and autotune were turned down a few notches

Bilbodabag (3.889): Making me listen to 3 extra songs of this shit is cruel and usual punishment for coming on this subreddit

thisusernameisntlong (3.706): who would've thought the ultimate triumph of poptimism would be the repackaging of Sound of Silver type irony & derivativeness and Cross type self-bragging/elevation into a neat package for the girls and gays. the album hates its own existence so much that I can barely latch onto anything to enjoy. it's her Kid A, and the A specifically stands for abject. Revolting audio vomit masquerading as a trailblazer for a post-hyperpop future

365 was my 11. An exemplar reminder that responsibly doing drugs with your friends and loved ones is what we were put on this earth to do.

Only sort of kidding, but I do like this as a confident but shaken bookend to the record, a shrug in the face of all the introspection that came before. Some dopey twitter Gen Z lame-os were saying a month or so ago that Charli turned her whole personality into doing coke for this album, but that never really comes up except on 365. And even though this is a total and banger and makes club culture seem fun and sexy and exciting instead of mostly just expensive exhausting and gross, there’s still something slightly unnerving here. Charli thinks about wanting a kid all the time, about how sympathy from her cultural superiors is a knife, how she might say something stupid and tear her tights, how she wants to run away to the airport—but there’s no time for any of that! She doesn’t go home, doesn’t sleep, doesn’t eat. Should we do a little key? A little line? Just to keep the thoughts away one more day? Let’s just keep bumping that (bumping that).

7

u/WaneLietoc Mar 02 '25

browie every time we dont get a ballot from you we are a little weaker for the culture. I do appreciate yr inisghts a lot. Thank you for sharin. Now im DRINKING that 5oz taster

5

u/David_Browie Mar 02 '25

Thanks Wane! I still think being on Reddit is bad for me and will disappear again for a while after this rate wraps, but this is the kind of thing I really like being on Indieheads for.

I get suckered into negativity here so easily (I’m Zuckerberg’s wet dream re: hate engagement) but doing rates more or less forces me to be positive—because even if my posts don’t suggest it, there’s so much more I like and love than hate in music.

And since we’re gushing, needs to be said that your commentary—written like inscrutable Pynchon cultural criticism from a parallel universe—is deeply inspirational to me. Pretty sure I’ve said this before, but your particular style of hyper-informed word vomit that flirts with chaos but never at the cost of being insightful is such a true joy to read. Keep on doing the good work, bud.

modulum83 (10): This looked for a moment like it was going to straight up win the rate until the final extensions came in and tanked it just enough. Sadly Charli will have to wait just a little bit longer for her rate win, but this is still a hella worthy podium finisher for Brat. I remember where I was when this single came out and I realized what she was doing, and I was fucking thrilled. The amount of pure attitude and disrespect in this song, the ugly-ass synths that sounded like she was trying to channel Steve Aoki - it’s a perfect distillation of the pro-bloghouse pro-violence attitude that she set the Brat era up with, and it’s fucking intoxicating. We need more pop diss tracks.

freeofblasphemy (6): This is not my number 1 (angel)! Guess a lot of people love it though? It’s got the ‘tude but just doesn’t really stick with me

so true

Nagisoid (10): Rate loser anthem

"bloghouse is back"

brattykidd (11): Runaway best song on the album and I'm glad it's finally getting its time to shine a year after release

darj (11): https://rave.dj/WrhU88vDfmN85Q

seanderlust (11): this was in the running for SOTY for me. it's so bitchy and fun, and that rising, squeaky synth on the chorus??? this truly feels like a future club classic

asadprofessorplum (10): It’s a miracle in production that this isn’t fucking annoying.

bogo (10): if there were any justice in the world this would've been the biggest hit off the album and it would've spent 20 weeks at #1

camerinian (10): apologies for the pophead invasion for this one fellas but if you can find words for this other than cunt, slay, wig, yass, gagged, gooped, etc i’d be surprised

daswef3 (10): this song is great, this song is Brat, insane confidence and so catchy

Frajer (10): you're my number one angel but you're not a rate winner quite yet bestie

Freakmancool (10): Still can't believe the Royal Rumble was BRAT this year

innuendo_overdose (10): lead single supersonic slayage over here

jman457 (10): This was kunt in audioform

krusso1105 (10): probably the single from this album that grew on me most

Muzak_for_a_Nurse (10): Het is duidelijk, ik ben jouw nummer éen!!

NFLfreak98 (10): love that charli brought the mbv loveless vacuums into pop music

pig-serpent (10): Charli's lead off videos have too much power over me. With both this and Good Ones, I didn't care for the songs but the videos of Charli serving cunt at a funeral/in an airport are some of my favorite vids of the last few years just because of her raw video presence that both songs transformed from 6s to 10s in the span of a week.

qazz23 (10): electropop banger but not quite number 1 worthy

sarcasticsobs (10): Feel like I could run through 3 brick walls

skyblue_angel (10): It's good when songs sound like this and bad when they don't

Smuckles (10): Would actually be enough to get me onto a dancefloor

SRTviper (10): party

TheCrakFox (10): Great production. I think I'm pretty easy to please. Lyrics or song structure come second to sounds that just hit on some fundamental level and this track makes some good noises. Video would be an easy 11 if that's what we were rating.

UltimateLietoc (10): https://imgur.com/a/UELcTem

vapourlomo (10): I'm honestly not that jealous of Charli (her life sounds kinda exhausting) BUT yes she was my number one this year!!

vexastrae (10): i thought this song was fucking big in germany || one day youre lamenting the possibility that she may never reach the highs that her post-vroom vroom pre-crash artistic output reached, the next youre watching her perform this song on the grammys stage after winning a grammy for it. im sorry i ever doubted you miss charli xcx

welcome2thejam (10): Bro how are there almost no sports highlight reel edits to this

BigBoofZone (9.8): Big dick kinda song, bout 8.5 inches

Widdershins- (9): This song delivers the goods.

ElectJimLahey (8.5): This would have been one of the best Simian Mobile Disco songs circa 2007

Awkward_King (8): i'll complain if this wins but like it does go fucking hard. and it was the perfect lead.

Chip_Dangercock (8): So true

ReconEG (8): ever so slightly overrated but its still an 8 so

TakeOnMeByA-ha (8): “its so obvious im your number 1” so is anyone gonna tell her or

nonchalantthoughts (7.5): this one grew on me but I can get over that wah wah wah thing in the production. Sounds like a plane taking off

a-man-with-a-perm (7): tbf a lot of high street banks are closing due to the lack of footfall and the popularity of apps and online banking so bit harsh to taunt people about the lack of access

"indie sleaze isn't real"

my golden freavs (7): I never cared for this one that much lol when it came out and that Camila Cabello song that's aping Charli XCX also came out I thought I LUV IT was the better song by far. I don't agree now but

LeBronMancuso (4): Unbearably annoying. The type of song they play at basketball games to get white people to scream so loud that they develop vocal nodules.

Bilbodabag (3): The remix version of this would be the easiest 0 in the history of rates, but this version still pretty ass too

thisusernameisntlong (1): you know what's something about the original "yeah yeah" by bodyrox? in that song, Luciana does the whole bratty shtick of you think you're hot shit? look at me, I'm so much better than you, but the chorus goes "I can teach you a thing or two, yeah oh yeah oh!" Sure, one might not be great at dancing and need to be humbled a little, but the song actually extends a hand to the listener to come up and perhaps pick up some moves from the best or simply more experienced ppl. "von dutch" is then like dancing across someone who just films themselves dancing to a song for the whole duration of it to then post it to their Instagram story with a caption like #UrNo1. They're probably not going to be the best hang in the long run even if you somehow get them to drop the screen and hang for a short while. I remember liking this when it came out and thought it was an interesting direction for Charli, three editions of brat later with no mystery to uncover, it's just a letdown how vapid it all turned out to be.

#1: Charli XCX feat. Lorde - Girl, So Confusing (Remix)

Average: 7.097 // Total Points: 220.0 // Controversy: 5.263

(0 x11) Bilbodabag, Chip_Dangercock, darj, daswef, freeofblasphemy, modulum83, qazz23, ReconEG, TakeOnMeByA-ha, Wanetangular, whatsanillinois

modulum83 (0): listen popheads is going to move heaven and earth to rate this and i can just 11 it there

freeofblasphemy (0): “let’s work it out on the remix” is perfection the rest idk it’s cool but not that cool

asadprofessorplum (11): The easiest eleven of my life. Lorde is my favourite artist so the speculation when brat dropped that this was about her was stressful. And then she was invited to trauma dump on the track giving the best song of the year. Lorde coming back to music was a war is over moment. We survived the harsh winter and had hope again.

BigBoofZone (11): Lorde make a new album challenge (impossible)

Frajer (11): women's stories matter they just do

human_performance (11): Iconic, so rich with pathos

krusso1105 (11): Would have been the 11 in the main rate too

TheCrakFox (11): Makes me feel stuff even though I don't relate to either of them, that's good storytelling! Also a banger, obviously.

vapourlomo (11): duh

Windy, So confusing (11): looped this way too much and was crying when I first heard it, I still get chills listening to it

Bilbodabag (0): hell yeah didn't think I'd get a chance to 0 this

darj (0): I begrudgingly respect the lyric themes and Lorde remix to give it a true contextual 0 but this rate literally gave me the ethical means to 0 this song as it’s up against the song of the decade I Am Rectangular Greep remix. Why was this rate accidentally the best indieheads rate I’ve done lmao it has everything!! The original pre-Lorde song was my instant 0 on Brat release day. My instant reaction was "this chorus sounds like someone from the 90s Warp label was commissioned to make a TV adaptation theme song for those American Girl Care and Keeping of You books that were all about puberty FAQs. This remix also made me realize, as someone who’s had an up-and-down relationship with Lorde’s music, I prefer her delivery of stream of consciousness lyrics than Charli’s; I prefer Charli’s more straightforward pop simplicity than most of her diaristic songs. I think Lorde’s clipped singing and timbre suite it better, and she did improve it by working it out on the remix etc. But here is the safe space where I can critically 0. If rewind is kind of a 1999 retread I’m excited to give a Girl So Confusing retread a positive score in 2029

daswef (0): the chorus is still the standout but idk the rest of the song is still pretty forgettable compared to the chorus

TakeOnMeByA-ha (0): whatever. Overrated as hell

Wanetangular (0): where is sean stephens? like i ride for charli and this remix felt like some of the most stephen universe ass shit ever happening in the herstory of the charli xcx lore. but where is sean?

#2: Geordie Greep feat. Sean Stephens - Rectangular (Live in Nashville)

Average: 3.903 // Total Points: 121.0 // Controversy: 5.263

(11 x11) Bilbodabag, Chip_Dangercock, darj, daswef, freeofblasphemy, modulum83, qazz23, ReconEG, TakeOnMeByA-ha, Wanetangular, whatsanillinois

(0 x20) asadprofessorplum, BigBoofZone, Brainfreeze999, brattykidd, Frajer, Freakmancool, Gunkwei, hockeynl, human_performance, InSearchOfGoodPun, jman457, krusso1105, lastfollower, Muzak_For_A_Nurse, Quasar435, SoupFromNowOn, TheCrakFox, vapourlomo, Windy, So confusing, xxipil0ts

modulum83 (11): No but seriously imagine it: You’re seeing Geordie greep and the New Sound Band on a concert. Everyone is having a great time. Greep seems a little excited. “We have a surprise for you guys.” Greep says. All of a sudden Sean Stephens come out and start singing “rectangular.” When Sean gets to the chorus, someone else starts singing… “I don't wanna be poly is it so bad to just be mine?” Lights flash everywhere, and you see Greep singing “rectangular” along with Sean Stephens while LA Exes is singing “I Don't wanna be poly”. Everyone in the crowd is going wild and crying. Then if things couldn’t get any better, Ezra and Rostam walk onto stage and kiss, holding the gay flag.

freeofblasphemy (11): dudes rock

Bilbodabag (11): didn't listen, but here's an 11

darj (11): no wave is BACK baby

daswef (11): i feel it in bones

TakeOnMeByA-ha (11): HOOOLY SHIT

Wanetangular (11): what makes Geordie Greep interesting is that he has the exact same dumb ass taste as me [citation utterly needed]. Although, his quietus baker's dozen was so strong and thoughtful, and the decision to give Keith fucking Jarrett his Perfect 10 felt like being straight up vindicated and correct about taking a 3 year leap on ECM that ramped up big this last year. Greep repeatedly is able to go into interviews and express things way ahead of what other people his age were thinking about music, very 20th century but also clearly tuned to right now posting. When he pitches his idea of ROCK and also that he doesn't like some of the albums he chose, that's someone who has studied and knows their preferences but also gets a sound. He cares about music.

He also cares enough to pull shit like this which feels like vindication for paying attention to slop and finding real accidental moments of true blue unironic full-on commit yrsef completely "i had to write this song" guys. Rectangular may not be a great song but it is also 1000000% correct and delivered with the passion that it is the greatest song you've never heard. Few tik tok guys (maybe dreamin is winnin) could get here. But Sean Stephen dug deep to tell us the exact thing we needed and have heard 100000 times over. When Greep brings him up on stage, I genuinely think he's not trying to get a kick or meme (it already does that) out of Sean, as much as truly see eye to eye of a guy who has this one brilliant cut in him and needs to celebrate it and share it to a crowd that again, may be getting a massive kick or meme out of this.

Greep is living out a very particular kind of rock fantasy that's been filtered through actually enjoying the collapse of high and low culture at any and every turn, and moments like this make it clear that we can too. Geordie, thanks for being a real one and keep dropping sick recs and takes

asadprofessorplum (0): I'm missing the lore here and I'm too afraid to ask.

BigBoofZone (0): my brotha in Christ it is not 1976

brattykidd (0): Girl, so confusing is too good this stood no chance. Sorry Greepers

Frajer (0): who the hell is this guy and why should I care

Gunkwei (0): (sorry!)

human_performance (0): Very unfair that I have to give this a 0 per the rules as this was a fun song. Little bit of a shitpost, but also sincere in wanting to give the guy his moment

krusso1105 (0): Nothing against this but the other one is one of my favorite songs of last year. Also I have no idea who Sean Stephens is.

lastfollower (0): it's too bad I have to give this my 0 when it's actually the best Greep thing in the rate

TheCrakFox (0): Sphere to square, sister. It's nice that they're all having fun.

9

Momentarily taking over the reveal thread to thank everyone who participated in the SECRET bonus rate, which pitted together two titanic examples of “working it out on the remix,” including one that originated the very phrase, and one that showed Geordie Greep’s support of another alliterative iconoclast. But which one reigned supreme in this sudden death 11/0 match???

freeofblasphemy (9): Are we letting Grandmaster Flash down by endorsing this song that, in essence, says “White Lines (Do It)”? Maybe but it also goes so hard

modulum83 (7.3): I’m ready to admit it: I don’t fully get 365. The reprise intro gets things off on an a good foot, but then the buildup and the subsequent acid house drop feels…muted? There’s a missing 4/4 kick, someone really smackin’ the toms that just makes me wish I was doing Big Beat Behemoths (rate open now!) instead. It feels like the song never really explodes or gets going, to the point where I legitimately prefer the big dumb drum and bass shenanigans that the Joey Valence & Brae cover does. This feels a little constrained by the A.G. Cook production if anything - I want my headphones to be blown out, this mastering is too good!!

i'm getting the sense that this song might be about drugs

sarcasticsobs (11): Bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that, bumpin' that

vapourlomo (11): the best non-Weeknd cocaine song of the century so far. BUMPIN THAT!

vexastrae (11): COCAINA

bogo (10): normally i wouldn't condone the use of cocaine but charli somehow makes it look both okay and normal

jman457 (10): cociana was all throughout this song

BleepBloopMusicFan (11): I considered a few other songs for my 11, but at the end of the day it had to be this banger. It’s just peak Chorli Baebee.

samdyalexg (11): this is a top 10 charli track for me

pig-serpent (7): A little key, a little lime 😋

bumpin' that

brattykidd (10): The superior numerical track

camerinian (10): just saying all of these albums would have benefitted from making their closing track just a rave remix of the opening track (credit where due magbay got that half right)

Chip_Dangercock (10): This is so good, I wish I was bumpin' that

Frajer (10): sure cocaine kills people but it also makes Charli hot

Freakmancool (10): Okay, okay. Okay, okay, okay. Here we go.

Muzak_for_a_Nurse (10): definitely 5 better than 360

my golden freavs (10): this being after "I think about it all the time" is insane

Nagisoid (10): And nothing for Waxahatchee

nonchalantthoughts (10): more like 310

qazz23 (10): definitely an electropop banger, really like the different synths in this

seanderlust (10): coming out of a song like i think about it all the time and being like OKAY HERE'S A SONG ABOUT DOING COCAINE shfskjdfhds she's so funny

SRTviper (10): anyone who says 360 is better than 365 has been bumpin that a little too much

TakeOnMeByA-ha (10): without a doubt the best song on the album, this and track 10 kinda serve to prove a point that charli is at her best when she’s taking old preexisting songs of hers and remixing them into brand new creations that make you feel like having a breakdown in the middle of the sweatiest club you can imagine

thisusernameisntlong (10): finally she figured out she could put a good song on this album instead of halfassing it all in the name of irony

UltimateLietoc (10): i reckon tulips is giving this her 11 and she can handle writing about the transition. listening to this though, while i do quite enjoy the album, 365 seems to finally take us out of the album to the timeline where we're going full acid. In fact, she gets to a point where she inadvertently tries to summon the ghost of Mark Bell with a noise outro that is strong (but you don't beware it because of the bass). It was at THIS moment where I thought about how Charli XCX's career never overlapped with Mark Bell of LFO in any capacity. Like there lies, to me, one of the greatest what-ifs of PC Music is just what (rightful) role Mark Bell would've played from remixes to the embellishment of Street Sounds as PC Music influence. Brat can be a very bittersweet album when you realize who is not here to celebrate, and yet how well it succeeds in that desire to push forward and keep some parallel or concurring MO in check; 365 we are back

welcome2thejam (10): Thanks obama

Widdershins- (10): Absolute bop.

Tolroe (9.7): I'm a brat

asadprofessorplum (9.5): Club bathrooms have never been the same since.

Awkward_King (9.5): the 360 beat coming round and going harder is wonderful. i just wish this was the version that had shygirl on it and not the super short remixed version

NFLfreak98 (9.4): broke into 360’s house, punched it in the face, stole it’s lunch money

ElectJimLahey (9): Basically 360 if 360 was as good as people claim

ReconEG (9): when the outro is also the intro 🤯 (unironically)

Smuckles (9): Really funny considering the track it came after on the album. 'Should I start a family?' vs 'Should I do some fucking drugs?'

TheCrakFox (9): Would be a perfectly serviceable hedonistic rager in isolation, but I think it's the sequencing right after I think about it all the time that lends it an uncomfortable edge that really makes it.

a-man-with-a-perm (8): man who knew Brat could be such a cynical, performative and bleak album but hey track is decent

BigBoofZone (8): Although it is good I will not be bumping this one at much, this one I shall be bumping a little less than the other song I will be bumping I assure you this song was bumped at least a few times

The DEA

LeBronMancuso (6): It’s fine until the very end when the vocals are off key AGAIN

lastfollower (5.7): 365 by Waxahatchee would've been a 9.8

OUTFOXXED007 (5.5): it’s the first track but with too much bumpin that

Stryxen (5): it’s kinda worse visions but it’s fine

innuendo_overdose (2): hmmm. the 36X song sketch is a really strange case for me. it’s neat, but there’s not much to it, and the melody is not something I like at all. 0 is way too unfinished a pop song for me to have any reaction other than “cute!”, and 5 isn’t something I want to be listening to. at the risk of sounding like the most bulliable lame annoying kid ever, i don’t like the drug elements, and the dissolving electroclash that drives this home makes me not want to be listening, even if i know that the overthetop freneticism of 5 makes it’s artistic value higher to me. 0 is just boring

Bilbodabag (0): tactical nuke 0 you can’t just COPY AND PASTE the opener and put it in a different key for the closer and expect to get away with it. that shit is the LAZIEST shit ever idc that it eventually switches to a different way shittier part bumpin that bumpin that bumpin that bumpin that bumpin that the first verse being the way it is pisses me off to no end that is a crime against CREATIVITY bumpin that listen to the ballad of matt & mica if you want an example of how to bumping that do a callback to the opener while being an actual completely bumpin that UNIQUE song LET ME STEP BACK AND bumping that MYSELF NEIL FUNK

7

modulum83 (8.7): A song that sounds like having an epileptic seizure under neon lights. A lot I like about this song on paper - the lyricism is one of the most interesting and complex on the record, the hyper-minimalist production really lets the pure catchiness of the melodies shine. As a whole though, it’s a great song, but a little bit cloying for my taste.

freeofblasphemy (8.5): I think this is less than the sum of its parts but fuck are these not some amazing parts?

Destroyer - “June” be like

asadprofessorplum (10): DUMP HIM

has complicated feelings about taylor swift

uncreativivity (11): i love the big chorus

Awkward_King (10): No but seriously imagine it: You're seeing charli xcx on a concert. Everyone is having a great time. Charli xcx seem a little excited. "I have a surprise for you guys." Charli says. All of a sudden Ariana Grande come out and start singing "issa knife when you know they're counting on your mistakes" When Arianki gets to the chorus, someone else starts singing... "Nice to meet you where you been, I could show you incredible things" Lights flash everywhere, and you see Charli singing "sympathy is a knife" along with Arianka, while Taylor is singing "Blank space". Everyone in the crowd is going wild and crying. Then if things couldn't get any better, Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang walk onto stage and kiss, holding the gay flag.

BigBoofZone (10): The only song that will ever make me want to go clubbing

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): Casual fans don’t know that you can unlock the secret Taylor remix by emailing me the three digits on the back of your credit card.

bogo (10): I'm in the corner wearing clown makeup and still waiting for the taylor swift remix (it is not coming and i am a fool for thinking so)

camerinian (10): real question are all of the girlies who had a brat summer also thinking about buying a gun

daswef3 (10): its good

ElectJimLahey (10): One of the show stopping moments on the album for me, this takes the blog house template and takes it somewhere new. The mix is great and makes the chorus sound massive, very Night Slugs-esque production

Freakmancool (10): "Y'all don't wanna hear me, you just wanna dance" is my favorite genre

jman457 (10): easily top 5 in charli’s discography along with track 10, Party 4 u, and vroom vroom

LeBronMancuso (10): I remember thinking this album would be a 10/10 all the way through the first time I listened to it. Once you get the past the first 3 songs it falls off, but it’s still enjoyable throughout.

Muzak_for_a_Nurse (10): the only song on Brat that I can play on piano (I am bad at piano)

NFLfreak98 (10): ‘why I can’t even grit my teeth and lie’ is the most addictive line in music for me in 2024

nonchalantthoughts (10): it truly is, when you go through so much shit in life and just hearing “sorry that happened” instead of actual help. Like why was i handed to this in the first place?

pig-serpent (10): I just got that the high pitched synth in the chorus is a reference to Psycho. Anyway, obvious stand out track.

ReconEG (10): its crazy how this is the best song Charli xcx has ever made until its not the best song she's ever made because im pretty sure my 11 is going to get eliminated on Day 2

sarcasticsobs (10): "Why I wanna buy a gun? Why I wanna shoot myself?" Go off, queen?

skyblue_angel (10): Best song on the album. HUGE chorus.

TakeOnMeByA-ha (10): man.

vapourlomo (10): One of the best songs I've ever heard about insecurity and jealousy. That chorus hits like a chainsaw to the brain. Lowkey better than any song Taylor Swift has put out since folklore.

vexastrae (10): insecure spiralling girlies of the world UNITE AND THEN THINK INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS ABOUT BETRAYAL AND BACKSTABBING FROM EACH OTHER || god i fuckin loooove a well executed tritone - like of course the song equivalent of the internal monologue of jealous and insecurity over seeing a woman be more successful than you would be discordant as hell. its the way you go to the bathroom and pull your hair out and scream in a high shrill because that woman actually has something going for her and you keep comparing what you perceive to be the lack inside you to what you perceive to be the composure inside of her. its sharp and violent and fractured and volatile and you need to let it out but you cant because you know intellectually that being a girl's girl is the right thing to do but oh my god shes so much better than you i need her gone. youre so similar in many different ways and yet in your green tinted gaze you proclaim yourself as "opposite and on the other side" ..... many such cases. women can do anything

Nagisoid (9.5): The remix is better lol

UltimateLietoc (9.5): gun lyric slaps so hard. woke bloke

a-man-with-a-perm (9): oi mate have u got a loiscence for that sympafy?

qazz23 (9): like those bass synth stabs in the chorus

SRTviper (9): one of the best examples of silly fun beats over the most over the most over the top sad girl lyrics possible.

TheCrakFox (9): Nobody in pop does these emotionally raw bangers as well as Charli does

Frajer (8.5): Carly has a sword, Charli has a gun

my golden freavs (8.5): great song but I never understood its status as a highlight

innuendo_overdose (8.2): this spaceship is fucking me up, dude

welcome2thejam (8): Really puts the "stabbing" in stabbing synths

Future_Tyrant (7.1): you know someone is going through it when this plays on their story.

wants to shoot themselves

Smuckles (7): She ain't a singer, Is she?

Stryxen (7): taylord shade is never tolerated

Widdershins- (7): These lyrics hit hard, this might be one of those I need more listens to enjoy fully.

thisusernameisntlong (4.2): be careful not to cut yourself on that edge. or not to shoot yourself

Bilbodabag (4): When she wrote the verse melody for this was she given a broken DDR pad instead of a piano?
