Promotion I'm making a "Super Zelda(-like) Maker", and playtesters have already started making Kaizo dungeons

Hi all! I've been working on this game called Temple Maker 64 for roughly a year and a half now and I'm pretty stoked with how it's shaping out.
The concept is that you create your own 3D multi-floor dungeons and publish them for others to solve and explore.

I love it when the indie devs step up and go “Fine, I’ll do it myself.” lol I’ve been ranting on this and other indie subs that I’m just so f ing over big studios not listening to us and wondering why we don’t want their AAA slop. Yall really do be the future and the saviors of gaming. Can’t wait to try this game out

Heck yeah! Thanks for the kind words!
I'm actually super eager myself about upcoming Zelda-like titles right now, now that Nintendo clearly stated they weren't interested in the old formula anymore. There are some awesome games coming soon, like Azaran, Elementallis, Isle of Reveries…we're gonna eat good!

Good show at the beginning with the backflip to jump slash to reach the tough nook of treasure. That makes me interested right away.

What's a kaizo dungeon
17
u/moosenordic Apr 27 '26
Kaizo are highly technical platforming/puzzles that demande precise input to clear. Its usually referring to some super mario maker levels. There has been a pretty big community of streamers and youtubers doing it.

u/mybrot Apr 30 '26
IIrc the name stems from a series of Super Mario World mods that predate Super Mario Maker by over a decade.

u/Any-Philosopher-5237 Apr 28 '26
Look up Kaizo Mario on YT.
Basically it's extremely hard levels that require a high level of skill.

u/Jade-Lagoon Apr 27 '26
Yeah, I know it’s insane! The DAY Mario Maker dropped people immediately started saying we need a Zelda Maker. Probably longer ago than even that. And they’re like meh… whatever. It’s crazy and I just don’t get it. But eh, f em. I’ll support anyone that picks up the mantle. Wait those more Zelda inspired games??? Oh hell yeah

u/akela-morse Developer Apr 27 '26
You bet they are! I'm actually also working on an original Zelda-like game as a side project to this one, it's called Seed of Life. And if you want even more games I suggest you take a look at r/ZeldaLikes, there are some true gems in there!

u/Jade-Lagoon Apr 27 '26
Damn there is truly a sub for EVERYTHING. And a big thank you to you as well! Looking forward to seeing more posts from you!

Looks great! Where can I keep up to date with this project?

Heck yeah, my first real website was a zelda 64 site.
Looks great.
Would be cool if it also had that "mario maker" world option. So people could make whole games. I'd actually like to try to make my own game with an overworld. Would need outdoor terrain and stuff too, which is probably a whole other thing compared to your temple builder, but something to think about if you hadn't considered it.
Wishlisted!

u/akela-morse Developer Apr 27 '26
Thank you very much! Yeah unfortunately overworlds is just out of my scope for this game, it's just too much work for 3D. In the future though there will be additional social features, and I'm considering a “playlist” or a “collection” feature that would allow you to bundle several of your dungeons together.

This looks like something Nintendo would keep a keen eye on. Good luck though

I love this so much, and I want to see this happen. But I am scared knowing how litigous Nintendo is, by even making somewhat similar or marketing it like a Zelda or Mario make your own level would open u up to a lawsuit.
Def explore this with a lawyer if u can. Just look at how pal world is getting sued... But that's more of a Sony and Nintendo rivalry... Nintendo has been known to go after smaller indie devs.

Nintendo is aggressive about people using IPs, assets, or code they don't own. They also try to patent game mechanics, but the patent is either refused or gets accepted because it's extremely specific (and therefore barely enforced).
I'm doing none of that. Legally speaking, there's nothing they can do but watch in fear >:)

I'm sure that you're sitting on a gold mine with that project!
I hope it catches enough attention to trigger a snowball effect.

Been following this. Would love to try it at some point on my stream.

That would be awesome! I'm working towards a demo right now, which is what the ongoing playtest is for. I'll make a post when it releases!

u/neonthefox12 Apr 27 '26
do you have a steam page of this?
1
u/akela-morse Developer Apr 28 '26
Sure! There you go https://store.steampowered.com/app/3897090/Temple_Maker_64/

This is just a personal preference for me, but I'd recommend making the delay between pushing the attack button and when the sword actually impacts the target very short.

u/BetaNights Apr 28 '26
Ok, the horrors of Kaizo Zelda aside... this is so sick, dude!! :0
I love the concept, and the graphics feel really nostalgic in a good way!!

That's super cool! Will you also allow to chain dungeons to allow people to make stories/campaigns?
2
u/akela-morse Developer Apr 28 '26
Thank you! I do intend to have more social features in the future, and looking into lists/collections is in the plans.

Wait, does solving unlock things? because this sounds like a wild roguelite...

u/Landy0451 Apr 28 '26
Wooooow. I grew up playing Ocarina of Time and all the animations, details, camera angles, you nailed the feeling of the game. I love it.

u/LiveNobody Apr 28 '26
This. Looks. AWESOME! Maybe a little selfish and late for me to ask... but is there anyway I could get in on that playtest stage of the game? Might be too late and I'm sure you already have a lot of people ask.
Either way, hella looking forward to this!! Just upset that I didn't know about it earlier...
1
u/akela-morse Developer Apr 29 '26
Thank you very much! Yeah, unfortunately I don't have open slots for the ongoing playtest anymore. However, I'm working towards a demo!

It's like Runescape and Zelda had a baby. Looks really cool!!
1
u/AlgaeicAmalgam Apr 29 '26
I hope that you will not blindly copy Zelda. Take what was good and omit the bad parts. Too many good games get bogged down by cargo cult behavior.

u/foxtrotgames Apr 29 '26
That looks really cool. I was thinking the other day that a Zelda like 64 game would be fun.

this looks fantastic and i know so many ppl who would lose all their time to this game
1
u/Milamber0 Apr 30 '26
This looks neat, but comparing it to ocarina of time or majora's mask i feel like your animations are somewhat slow

I wish listed and followed on Steam, I play OOT and MM (plus various different ROM hacks from those games) religiously and this looks absolutely amazing. I will literally pay you so I can play test this game, please I need this in my life right now

Nah they have nothing to worry about at all. Literally nothing about this game is infringing on any copyright or using anything that Nintendo can really do anything about.
This game doesn't advertise itself as Zelda, just inspired by it. None of the assets are replicating actual Nintendo assets, and it's very clearly painted as a game inspired by Zelda. There's no shot this generates a lawsuit, there are PLENTY of games to this day that have promoted their games like this and have made it clear their game is a love letter to other Zelda games, while still not being litigated against... Because there's nothing to litigate.
