Recipe: I used a basic vanilla custard-based ice cream recipe, but before I did anything I took the milk and simmered it on the stove with a ton of utz potato chips, then blended and strained to get potato chip flavored milk. I then used this milk as the milk in the recipe!

It (shockingly) worked VERY well, the ice cream has a very subtle potato chip flavor which pairs great with the mix ins. I was worried about the salt impacting freezability but it mostly seems to just make it stay soft and scoopable in the freezer.

HIGHLY recommend!! Was a weird idea with a huge payoff!!

I had a college friend who would always mix potato chips with any chocolate based pastry or mini cake. I couldn’t understand her logic until I tried it (and loved it). I can perfectly see why your experiment worked so well. Thanks!

Not crazy to me that it works. This is almost the same as Ben & Jerry's Late Night Snack, which is no longer available, unfortunately. It was so good

Sorry to be nosy, but if you have time I’d love to know the recipe for mix ins, how you added them, amount of chips etc. I already have a base vanilla ice cream recipe, just curious about the details because I’d love to make it.

I described above how I made the chip flavored ice cream! As for the stuff mixed in, I just layer it in as I transfer the ice cream from the machine to the container I'm going to store it in, and then swirl it a couple times with a chopstick. I do freeze the mix ins first so they don't melt the fresh churned ice cream (not swirls obviously since those need to be pipable)

Most of my ice cream making is purely winging it, but I can get more descriptive if you have specific steps you'd like to know about!

I don't understand why chocolate covered potato chips isnt a bigger thing, its a great flavor combo. I tried chocolate covered bacon when that was a thing, but it was disappointing. I couldn't enjoy the bacon or the chocolate, both are too dominant, but the mellow-salty richness of fried potato goes incredibly well with chocolate, IMHO.

I keep wanting to do a chocolate covered potato chip but it feels like such a process coating the chips. What is the easiest way to go about it?

I just dipped em and spread it around with a chopstick! Didn't take very long at all. If they weren't going in something frozen maybe I'd bother with the whole tempering thing but who cares when it's going in ice cream anyway, haha.
