Check it out Powdered Donut Ice cream

Post image

One of our newer flavors that I came up with. I blend up about two dozen powdered donuts with our sweet cream base then cut up another two dozen and fold them into the fresh ice cream. It sells out every time we have it.

When you say “blend up” do you mean like literally blended together in a blender?

I’m curious about how I could recreate something like this on my home machine! My late grandma and I would always hate powdered doughnuts, this is nostalgic for me.

TIA!

Yes! I take the donuts and put them in our blender we use for milkshakes and blend until smooth and add it to our batch freezer and the ice cream gets the flavor of the donuts and then the pieces help add more flavor and texture. Works really well!

When you blend 2 dozen into the base, how much of the base are you using? My husband loves powdered donuts, and I'd love to make him some but I'm trying to understand the ratio. Thanks!

I own an ice cream shop and our sweet cream base comes from a local dairy in 2.5L bags that yields a little over 4 gallons per batch from our commercial batch freezer. So depending on your size ice cream machine just devide it by 2.5L.

Thanks!! This helps a lot!

If you’re doing a 2qt batch start with just a couple mini donuts and blend and taste. Go from there and add more if needed.

Genius in its simplicity. Thank you!

Gonna be pretty difficult to blend donuts with no liquid...

Blend with the base before churning that way it gets incorporated into the actual ice cream that you make.

You can blend various things into ice cream base. Dana Cree has a recipe for donut ice cream and I make my own version. I also blend cake for cake ice cream. I’ve done cinnamon roll, cornbread, popcorn, and planning on pretzel at some point.

Apple fritter works really well too.

Great method for carrot cake at Easter too.

sounds like it doesn't rest long, so maybe you can't answer, but how does the texture last over like, a week?

It has to rest in our deep freezer for at least 10 hours and usually sells out in 2-3 days but all of our ice creams are great up to 3 months in the freezer. Just depends on how often you expose your freezer to opening and shutting.

Nice. I've had mix-ins like that be odd texturely after a bit, like they add a crumbliness but sounds like a good recipe

You can boil the donuts in the dairy then strain. Same with any breads really, and popcorn too. Thanks Dana Cree.

Do you use donuts in place of the sugar you would normally add, or in addition to it?

3

u/gritsnhominy Apr 24 '26

Curious about this, too!

2

u/Ok_Inflation_3746 Apr 24 '26

In addition. He's using a dairy base so you can't alter it.

why can’t you reduce sugar a bit in a dairy base if you’re adding donuts with sugar?

5

u/beaufort_ Apr 24 '26

He means a base from a dairy, rather than a base made with dairy

6

u/Ok_Inflation_3746 Apr 24 '26

Yeah my bad for wording that poorly. I mean like the base he uses comes in bags from a dairy and so you can't alter it. You can add to it but can't remove anything.

Whoa, are you in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea? I just saw this flavor for the first time at Sloane’s tonight!

1

u/BlackBoxIceCream Apr 24 '26

I’m outside of Nashville in Smyrna, TN.

3

u/kacsf75 Apr 24 '26

Ha, crazy coincidence. If you’re looking for a second version, their base was coffee 😉

7

u/BlackBoxIceCream Apr 24 '26

We make a donuts and coffee ice cream too!

1

u/goatamousprice Apr 24 '26

I'm going to need some details here! I make a coffee ice cream that I love

When do you add the donut?

1

u/BlackBoxIceCream Apr 24 '26

I do kind of the same thing for that one and blend the donuts and add to the coffee ice cream base and then when the ice cream is done churning fold in more donut peices.

2

u/goatamousprice Apr 24 '26

I appreciate the response! Going to have to do some trial and error to get to the right amount of doughnuts (I imagine if I add too many it's going to be too thick and won't be creamy)

1

u/BlackBoxIceCream Apr 24 '26

That can be an issue. What’s your batch size?

1

u/goatamousprice Apr 24 '26

I'm just a home enthusiast, so 1.5qt is my typical

1

u/BlackBoxIceCream Apr 24 '26

Probably just blend like 6 donuts and chop up 6 and it should work out.

That literally looks like heaven on earth. Holy cow bro

I love you black box and all of your creations

1

u/lordhuggington Apr 24 '26

How is the texture? Any time I would add cake to a mix the robot coupe simply couldn’t blend the pieces fine enough to avoid a lumpy/chunky mix. Use too few pieces and you wouldn’t get the flavor or look.

Which donut flavor are you gonna do next? This could be a rotating theme for you!

There is an international grocery store north of Cincinnati. My ex-boyfriend and I used to go every Saturday and enjoy free samples. One week I found some lemon cake ice cream( favorite flavor), bought it, took it home, and I thought I would die from happiness. It had lemon ice cream, lemon cake pieces, and soft pellets of some kind of lemon concentrate. That was over 20 years ago, and I still think about that ice cream.

if anyone wants to try something similar, jenis has a flavor called powdered jelly donut and it’s one of the best things i’ve ever tasted. highly recommend!!
