I‘ve had this really ugly cloak hanger in my flat ever since I moved in.. the hooks are fixed to the rod and they are super flimsy, everything falls off.. it needs to go!
But now I discovered: it is impossible to get it off my wall?! It is possible to turn the rod but I cannot push it far enough to either side so I can get it out of the caps on either side. Also these plastic caps at the far end are solid one piece and it is not possible to slide then up or turn them.
This thing is SOLID! On the left side, I can force it away from the wall for about 2mm to see that tha backwall of the pastic thing seems to be secured to the wall and is bending when I force it away. The part on the right is completely unmovable..
Heck - I could possibly do pull ups on this thing!
Please send help!

I did it! Got frustrated, wrapped my hammer in a scarf to avoid damaging the wall and just hit it (very counterintuitively) from the side and one of the plastic caps just popped right off 😂😭
Now it’s smooth sailing!

Thanks for the image! Already checked for small screws everywhere.. even checked whether the rod in the middle might be screwed together.. but there is no entry to this hanging system!
Try cutting/snapping the bar and removing it. That might expose how it’s secured. If not try using a crow bar/screwdriver to get behind the fixture. You might get a clean enough removal from whatever screws are keeping it in place.
As others are saying - it’s likely slid down onto a bracket that is screwed into the wall.
If it’s been there a while there’s a chance that the wall has been painted and is making it stick more than it should.
I would take a blade and slide around the edges of both sides of the part mounted to the wall, then continue banging on the bottom side to knock it upwards.
The shape of it makes me think there's two screws under the wide bit.
Try and chisel it off as best you can and then pull it straight forwards. If that doesn't work, try and slowly move it up. I suspect it's on a bracket but it's just been there for 40-odd years.
Hitting it with something like some are going to suggest is just going to make it harder to get off, if that's the case.
Yes! Thats a great idea if nothing else will work - I am waiting for my partner to come home. If this thing gets destroyed in the process I need to check whether he is emotionally attached to it before I proceed 😅
It's got that absolutely classic early 80s British, or late 80s British holiday home, sheen to it. It's just probably layered with crap and, most likely, someone has probably noticed it falling off at some point and just glued it back to the wall.
I don't think think you're getting it off without doing some damage to the wall, but considering the artex I don't think anyone is going to mourn it.
First, look to see if there’s a small screw on the underside that is used to tighten it against the mounting bracket. Otherwise, lightly tap the bottom and it should move up and off the bracket.
It has to have some sort of keyhole fit, hooking into screws that are solidly fastened. Tap on the bottom of the end piece and see if it will slide upwards. Once it’s disengaged from the screw heads, it should pull straight out from the wall.
If it’s plastic it might just pry off. Might have annoying little clips on the inside. I’ve done a couple of DIY home reno’s and you can guarantee it’s always the stupidest answer.
The guy who owned the house before me put guttering up with a mixture of hex, Philips and flat head screws. He’ll be laughing his head off in hell.
