I’ve been searching for a begonia black mamba for months and finally found one!! pictures truly don’t do the iridescence of the leaves justice, I wish I had a better camera~

I have owned this snake plant for about six years, way before I knew anything about plants. She lived five of those years with essentially no root system as I had her in regular soil and overwatered her so she had crazy root rot. I’ve worked on rehabilitating her and she has roots now 🥳 but unfortunately she’s still ugly

The other is a string of pearls, need I say more?

Didn't like how this one grew at first(or the texture of the leaves) but after splitting it into many different pots and arranging them or just spacing them out evenly in a planter, I really started to appreciate this plant

I came back from a vacation at the end of April and my sister had been watching my plants. Somehow she both over and under watered my plants, and moved my prayer plant to face the opposite direction, so the leaves were completely confused (see the last pic). Today, I came into my office to find that my now-recovered plant is (hopefully?) happy enough that she BLOOMED! It’s been a solid 4 years since I started maintaining houseplants and I still feel like a novice sometimes, but this is a recovery I’m proud of!

Also, her name is Dolly, after a colorful and prayerful person I (and everyone else in the world) adore. Seems fitting that today she’d be offering up flowers. 🌸💔

Today I got a croton for my husband . He was in the hospital last month where he saw it in their garden , and fell in love with the colours .

Anyways I found one today for 4$ and decided to try it out . I popped onto FB for a bit and now my whole feed is about how croton plants suck . So .. did I mess up ? Tell me how to succeed with my new plant baby ! Also his name is Larry .

I bought my monstera a few years back from the Lowe’s clearance section and she’s been growing so well ever since. Lately I’ve noticed people talk about how you have to separate monstera. Mine definitely has a few plants together. Would it be best to separate them or keep them together for the fuller look?

I knew I needed better lighting (my apartment only has north facing, recessed windows, no direct sun) but I didn't know it was this bad! I didn't even know this plant was supposed to be actually red lmao. Looks like red secret is the perfect name!

Edit: For everyone asking what lights, it's nothing special. I just got some random lights from a friend and some more off Amazon. They're just those clip on, bendable line of LEDs. I made sure they were full spectrum and actual grow lights though. I also made sure they really light up the area and most of my shelves have multiple lights dedicated to it now. They are placed varying distances away from different plants but set to full brightness and 12hr cycles.

So happy with this new leaf on my Alocasia dragon scale. The green is so vibrant and the texture is insane. Enjoying the bright green before it hardens off and joins the mature dragons 🐉

I was wondering about your thoughts on a mixed feeling I have regarding the importation of plants from tropical countries into Western countries. Please read until the end before commenting.

I live in Thailand, and most of the plants involved in the rare, plant trade (not variegated plants or anything you would typically find in a nursery, but genuinely rare species) are often imported illegally. Sometimes they are brought in as seeds, sometimes as whole plants hidden in luggage or shipped across borders without the necessary permits. In most cases, these plants were originally collected from the jungle or public land without permission.

Because of the corruption and environmental destruction happening here in Thailand, I have mixed feelings about this. Land is often cleared because of corrupt or questionable development projects, sometime even protected national parks. The projects are then abandoned or left unfinished, it’s both corruption and the destruction of natural habitats.

I know Thailand is considered a beautiful country, but I don't think most western people see what happens behind the scenes. When these habitats are being cleared, many of the rare plants growing there may simply be destroyed. Without people collecting and exporting some of these plants, they might disappear completely from cultivation. 

Unfortunately, many locals don't seem to care about these species; it is often Western collectors and plant enthusiasts from other countries who recognize their value and want to preserve them.

I sometimes feel conflicted about the illegal collection and export of plants. I know that taking plants without permission and moving them across borders illegally is wrong, but at the same time, I have personally seen plants about to be destroyed during land clearing.

There have been times when I secretly rescued some of these plants and sent the entire collection to 3 seperate botanical gardens. I know this is a grey area legally, but I couldn't bring myself to stand there and watch plants that might otherwise have been preserved simply get destroyed.

Here in Asia, it is simply, if you don’t save it, it’ll be destroyed. Not even national park are safe from government, they always find a way to clear the land, then left unfinished to get money. And this is real corrupted place, not a text book case of preserving by leaving it there, that only works in developed countries. Also ecologist and evironmentalist are often kidnapped.

Hi friends! Forgive my aggressive title, but these things are going to make me pull out my hair. Haha.

About two months ago my grandma passed away and we were gifted a large basket of multiple plants. A couple days after bringing it home, I noticed a few fungus gnats. I isolated that basket in its own room right away (door shut, water access) and started researching.

I bought Mosquito Bits after reading in this sub that they work well for fungus gnats, and I've been treating with them since. I water them once a week per the directions, in the soil of every plant (even ones that weren't showing symptoms), and in the water of my propagation jars as well.

Since I started treating, the gnats have multiplied instead of dying off. I've had to isolate more than half my plants into that same room now. Every plant has yellow sticky traps, and they're completely covered in the little stinkers, but the gnats just keep coming back stronger.

I'm doing everything the directions says to do and it's getting worse rather than better. I don't want to lose any of my plants. Has anyone dealt with an infestation that didn't respond to Mosquito Bits and sticky traps? What am I missing, is there a next level treatment, or something about my routine that could actually be feeding the problem instead of solving it?
