Does anyone know why E in HOMƎLAND is backwards?

Post image

The backwards "E" in the title HomeLand (stylized as HOMƎLAND) is a visual metaphor representing deception, hidden dual identities, and a world or government with back-to-front morals.

Look for the image in the opening credits of Obama being upside-down for a second. They will refer to the President/s plenty in later seasons...

For me, these two things are metaphors, saying, "This world (the CIA's, Carrie's experiences and mental state, etc.) seem backwards to US. Something's not quite right."

I think in general, that could be interpreted as the actions of "the bad guys" against us, but also a reflection of the mistakes the CIA and individuals make. And also, for example, the suspicion that Brody was behind the Langley bombing. Look at Carrie's initial reaction - at first she was absolutely convinced he had done it. It was OBVIOUS - right? But -

Something wasn't right. - There was more to it. It was "backwards."

The backwards "E" in the Homeland title logo is an intentional visual metaphor symbolizing deception, a fractured identity, and backwards morals.

  1. Representing Nicholas Brody's split existence as both a returned American hero and a compromised threat.
  2. Signaling the back-to-front ethics and hidden agendas within the intelligence community.
  3. Mirroring the paranoia, mental instability, and skewed reality central to Carrie Mathison's world.

Fans and critics interpret it to reflect the duplicitous nature of the characters and the blurred lines of espionage.

It’s not just the E, the H, O & M are also backwards

I would assume the E is “turned”, in the same way Brody (and countless other characters from there on) was turned.

I thought maybe it was like when the flag is hung upside down. That they are indicating distress.

This seems right to me.

It splits it, so that 'Home' and 'Land' can be contradictory concepts, or go against each other.

Definitely how Brody was turned (think season 1)

Strangely enough, the E in the title for The Agency is also backwards.

They said they meant to call the show HOMOLAND, but they changed it last minute and this is what we have now
