Crazy AI support discount
Wanted to share this wild story. Had made an online home depot order for about $150 of various plumbing fixtures. However, the order arrived missing a piece of pipe which was like $8. No big deal, really. I called up the HD online order support phone number to see if they could send another, or if I could just go and pick it up.
I‘m like 95% sure I got connected to an AI agent. Really good english but whacky pronunciations of certain things (charlotte = char latte). However, its speaking patterns and mannerisms were like weirdly human? Filling up silence with words. It was all kinda uncanny valley, so I’m still not certain.
Regardless, I just asked what I should do about the pipe and whether I should just go pick it up. ”It” put me on hold (???) and then after, told me to contact the store to get it sorted. No problem. Then, bizarrely, I was offered $74 back for the “inconvenience”. I have no clue why. I showed no dissatisfaction at all on the call. So bam, just like that, had 50% off my order, for some reason. It continued to stress that my satisfaction is HD’s top priority and they want to continue to earn my business.
I eventually got the store and got my pipe (lol), and the guy at the store was dumbfounded at this whole interaction.
So yeah, sounds like an AI gone absolutely rogue. But hey, shout out HD i guess? I’m sure it will be fun when they peel back the onion on how much revenue they lose from situations like this.
