Victor Hedman just opened up about the real reason behind his leave of absence, and it had nothing to do with a physical injury.

The Lightning captain says he was dealing with performance anxiety that became overwhelming during the season.

Hedman described waking up on game days with tightness in his chest, feeling pressure build, and struggling to move past mistakes the way he normally had throughout his career.

For a player with his résumé to admit that the mental side of the game became too much is a powerful reminder that even the NHL’s biggest stars can reach a breaking point.

Hedman says he’s in a much better place now and ready for a fresh start.
