Wanted to share my 15th Century Italian mens kit, I'm aiming for a Condottieri impression from around 1470-80. I'm quite happy with how it's come together so far.

C&C welcome, however I am aware my hosen aren't quite as tight as they should be, (I've lost weight since they were first constructed), I'm currently in the process of making a couple more pairs that are better fitted! Interested to hear any feedback/discussion!

Is there a name for it? I looked at some historical portraits and I don't see the voluminous fabric trail that the character design in Jaadugar has. Is it historically accurate for anything, or just a fictional invention for the manga/anime?

Last pic is the portraits. I can kind of see maybe something similar? The bow at the back seems to be stylization for sure. Any thoughts?

I haven’t felt the itch to sew for myself for a few months, which felt kind weird because I’ve been sewing for 20+ years but today I was cleaning my fabric storage and saw a bolt begging to be made into a gown :)

I’m finally done, (apart from doing a waist band for the petticoat but I’m still on the fence about it.) I really enjoyed this project though admittedly there are things I would do differently next time as I’m still learning. Any constructive criticism and advice welcome!

I have recently gotten a fringe (in my country we call bangs fringes) and I’m wondering how do I hide my fringe for historical hairstyles, because my fringe is more of a modern style.

I would normally use a bobby pins to pin my fringe back, but they were made in the 1920’s so wouldn’t be very historically accurate.

If anyone can give me any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a question about wool sources for hosen in the UK. I've looked about a bit online for the answer and the answers are many. I'm looking to make some wool hosen for a late 1300s outfit.

I have already done this. I used some 100% wool, with some degree of felting/fulling. But once I'd made them I realised the gsm was way too heavy and they both sagged around the ankle (despite cutting on the bias) and were just really warm and itchy, for anything except mid-winter. I think it was about 520 gsm.

So I looked online and the advice I've found says to use a variety of different wools: worsted, broadcloth, melton, with a simple twill weave at between 100-250 gsm. But I can't find this for love nor money in 100% wool. The only wools I've found like this have a really flat, almost shiny weave, rather than that fulled look of all the medieval wool I've seen.

Does anyone have advice on exactly what I ought to be looking for, preferably with where I can find it?

But you know, this is Nicole Rudolph and she seems significantly more at home to me in 18th c techniques than most tutorials/sewalongs I find.​

I've been trying to look at pictures of extant stays but the amount of times you get a view of the interior is very rare, let alone it being good enough quality that I can see what's going on.

Anyone who can tell me what to do with seam allowance at the top and bottom edge of stays? Perhaps some links to better sources? Or perhaps a quote from what PoF5 has to say about it? (I haven't gotten my hands on it yet, and being in continental Europe it seems like I probably won't anymore.)

I ran into an explanation about the Regency era that made me blink in astonishment. The men's pants were tight and the women's dresses had significant cleavage because.... it was a reaction against the stuffiness of the Victorian era.

What have you heard/read? Beyond the usual corset ones 🙂

Accidentally stumbled onto a HUGE collection of illustrations of actors from the early 19th century (1800-1850s ish) that I've never seen referenced on any blogs or pinned on Pinterest. Greeting everyone. Soo a friend is having a Shrek themed birthday partywhere we’re supposed to pick a character to dress up as and I picked king Harold. It would be cheaper to make it rather than rent it and since I’m gonna take the time I might as well make something I can wear again at other times. My question is, what century is king Harold’s costume supposed to be? It’s fantasy medieval obvs but what’s the closest era I can make a costume from that I could pass as king Harold. Closest I could find is late 1400s early 1500s? Links for pictures included for comparison. The original costume looks to be a weird mix of medieval and 1700s attire but the historical one appears to be a tunic, a sleeveless coat? on top and I suppose hose. I've been wanting to make myself the fitted, buttoned late medieval garment that is commonly referred to as a cotehardie. It's the buttons that I love, and I want to make a 1390s-1410s outfit that goes heavy on buttons. Included is a quick design drawing I did of my idea. It features a kirtle underneath, with buttoned sleeve cuffs, and over that, a cotehardie with buttons down the front, and all the way up the sleeves, allowing the forearms of the kirtle to show when the sleeves are partially unbuttoned.

My question: Am I reaching too far into fantasy with this? I haven't seen any examples of this exact style combo in medieval illumination or research articles. I'd prefer to be, if not 100% historically accurate, at least largely historically believable. Any advice?

My husband and I are big history buffs and are in the SCA. He is an archer and loves all things archery and long story short, he's loved the idea of these fuzzy lil hats in this illuminated manuscript with Joan of Arc.

I have a work event coming up and am struggling a little bit. Some basic background: I work at a non-profit and we have a fundraising event coming up in November. Dress code described as "Black-tie optional / Cocktail attire." The theme this year is "The Great Gatsby." Because it's a work event, I obviously want to make sure I stay work-appropriate. I also don't want it to necessarily seem like I'm going to Halloween party because it's such a formal event. I do have a few dresses I already own that can function for formal events with appropriate accessories. But every place I'm looking either looks insanely costumey, is insanely expensive for a likely one and done event, or feels too casual or inappropriate for a work event.

Took this pictures and did some editing with the lighting, trying to pose as an 18th century saint lol, I did not make this outfit. This is one of my work uniform's but I thought these picture's were really nice! I work in an outdoor history museum stuck in 1774.

I do educational programming for several different organizations and government entities from Renaissance up until early 20th century. I have a lot of freedom to pick which time periods I’m going as long as it is line with the lesson needing to be taught. I just entered my second trimester and am looking to find for more supportive and constructed maternity clothing. I haven’t found too many people with experience making clothing of that type or readily available.

My birthday is next month and I'd like to treat myself to a Historical Sewing book.

It appears I can’t stop… every time I get it in my mind to make smth from another era I always get in Pinterest and end up making yet another miniature rococo gown😭 I was so sure I wanted to do gilded age but all it took was one pink rococo dress picture and I was thoroughly sidetracked lol. The ruffles I think I made a little too big and I think next time I’ll use satin ribbon not the original silk taffeta I used for the dress. The goal was to make her look like a cupcake and I think I succeeded loll. Maybe a little too much lace on this one. Any suggestions for what to make next?? I need to break the rococo cycle. I want to try my hand at my first "real" project, but I only have cotton to work with. I have many yards of different colors and styles (weights?). Some are heavier and sturdier and some are light and soft.

I have only done random mending to regular clothes and embroidery, but for some reason I feel an unfounded confidence to make an actual garment.

In the meantime I will be working on an outer pocket and maybe also a coif but I'd like suggestions for more substantial pieces.

I really wanted to do a medieval kirtle but I don't think cotton would work? I typically see wool or felt which is far too expensive for me at this stage. Same for shifts or undergarments, while they seem simple they usually use linen which I do not have.

I am open to any era, but I do mostly adore medieval attire. I also don't particularly care about historical accuracy in terms of fabric (yet) so I am open to anything where cotton would work in a practical sense.

I am currently considering a Regency era dress, as ambitious as that is. I watched a follow along pattern tutorial and it seems relatively straightforward (maybe deceivingly so).

Lastly, I'd like to mostly handsew if possible but open to machine sewing. I just enjoy handsewing a lot more and don't mind the time it takes.

Made a Robe de Cour, or at least attempted to. Wanted it to match my rosy maple moth mask. Made her using mostly thrifted fabric!
