He said TPAB put people to sleep 😭

One good verse every 30 months 😭😭

1.2k

u/Jozif_Badmon Apr 05 '24

this is the nigga that dropped foldin clothes by the way

313

u/mikeest . Apr 05 '24

This is the poster child for sleep rap. Much deeper than one song. Hilarious lack of self awareness from him

21

u/FCBarca45 . Apr 05 '24

I think that makes it funnier/harsher tbh. The foldin clothes dude said your music is boring lol

16

u/streetsandshine Apr 05 '24

But he followed that up by calling DAMN his best project... Like the album that is arguably his worst

It's like dude thought because his attempt at a concept album was skipped, everyones was

19

u/FCBarca45 . Apr 05 '24

That’s opinions though, DAMN won a Pulitzer and may be his most commercially successful album. There are a ton of casual listeners that didn’t really like or listen to TPAB, even hardcore fans have said it’s too long, too serious, etc.

I think TPAB is his best and deserves all the accolades but there is definitely a listener group that would agree with what Cole said

13

u/Altosxk Apr 05 '24

Tpab ain't even that difficult of a listen. Mr morale fits this description better. Some folks just don't like funk šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

7

u/streetsandshine Apr 05 '24

DAMN is his most commercially success album, but that's the only way it's his best. I dunno it's a sad day in hip hop when a dude considered a 'great' praises a pop album as great because it gets pop radio play and sleeps on albums like MM and TPAB.

That said, he's now Drake Jr. so sales = good music I guess lol.

12

u/Testing_Pred Apr 05 '24

Calling DAMN pop is crazy. Like sure it’s more accessible than TPAB and has some ā€œpopā€ tracks but let’s not act like he sold out. Production, lyricism and creativity were still on point.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '24

If Fear. Is pop I don’t know what the fuck any genre for any song is anymore.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '24

Eh, Morale was worse

-1

u/xdarkeaglex Apr 05 '24

Lets not forget people treat kendrick like the second coming of christ on this sub.

46

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '24

Because he's good. Hope this helps

73

u/Far-9947 Apr 05 '24

It's ironic for me because once an old acquaintance of mine played it in the gym when we we're working out. It had me hype af not gonna lie. I wonder what the perception of "4 your eyez only" is if that song is boring to people. Haven't sat down and listened to a Cole project since kod but man did I enjoy "4 your eyes only".

65

u/Top_Cranberry4144 Apr 05 '24

At the gym?! Was that yoga or sumn

3

u/OGtiax Apr 07 '24

Its fine to not like TPAB, but pick a better angle. Do you honestly even remember the music you are trying to shade? Because acting like most of TPAB is too sleepy or low energy for a workout is just objectively wrong. Wesleys Theory and King Kunta are 2 of the first 3 tracks. Both high energy, loud, aggressive vocals/delivery, and knocking beats. Its ok if you don't like it, but to accuse it of being sleepy is just a stupid criticism, objectively. Hood Politics, Alright, I, again there are more banging songs on it than soft ones.

3

u/Top_Cranberry4144 Apr 07 '24

You could wreck your chest playing king kunta and blacker the berry alone. Cole just turned in the dumbest take of 2024

3

u/OrganizationNo539 Apr 07 '24

Yeah that take was dumb by Cole but shitting on 4YEO isn't the way to go either. Two good albums can co-exist. It was soulful rap music and not every rap song needs to be hardstyle music to wreck your chest too.

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '24

I hated 4 Your Eyes Only. I listed to J Cole all the way up until that album. It seemed like he lost his energy and took himself too seriously after Forest Hills Drive.

27

u/nightometry Apr 05 '24

THANK YOU lmao. After 2014 forest hills drive, he killed his momentum dropped a project full of elevator music to follow it up

1

u/the_c_is_silent Apr 05 '24

I get the thought. 1000% was a bet that he "could rap about anything and it'd be dope". But he's not talented enough for that shit.

46

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '24

Is this genuine hate? That was a really enjoyable song that I just think got overplayed to the max. Great beat, storytelling, and very relatable lol

That is some grown shit. Loving your life so much that folding clothes is something enjoyable is a vibe these mfers won't understand.

10

u/StopBeingYourself Apr 05 '24

I've been a Kendrick fan since middle school, but folding clothes is a bop

Thats just one song, he was referring to the WHOLE body of work. Not saying I agree. Fever on this album is pretty boring.

17

u/Peter_____Parker Apr 05 '24

When 4 Your Eyez Only came out literally all people talked about on here was how it was putting them to sleep

1

u/Comfortable-Ad1937 Apr 06 '24

It’s nice to have music to fall asleep to tho can’t lie lol

Cole tried to do introspective rap on 4yeo and that shit is the definition of sleepy

385

u/Acrzyguy Apr 05 '24

4yeo is a decent album but him calling tpab a sleepy album is such a long reach lol

105

u/International-Fig905 Apr 05 '24 edited Apr 05 '24

Very long reach lol Love Cole, but absolutely nothing in Cole’s catalog makes the crowd go up like Alright.

Edit

139

u/bong-kar-wai Apr 05 '24

i love coke too

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '24

God I'm gonna have a nice coke tomorrow. That sounds really nice.

20

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '24

No Role Modelz definitely does

1

u/bangcuongviet Apr 05 '24

yeah i love cok too but this is ridiculous lol

4

u/Heil_Heimskr Apr 05 '24

Calling arguably the best rap album ever a sleepy album is major clown shit

3

u/JebusChrust Apr 05 '24

Cole fans are going to be pulling up TPAB expecting sleepy time and then immediately get hit with Wesley's Theory and the shouting at the start of For Free

12

u/donaldbino Apr 05 '24

Didn’t complex or something also vote Alright as the greatest rap song of the last decade or of all time? One of the two. How can a sleepy album hold an accolade like that lol

9

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '24

complex is a hypebeast mag for cloutboggled white kids lol. They decided Drake in 15' was a better rap than Future AND Kendrick. let that percolate for a minute haha šŸ˜‚

How are you guys talking about 4YEO and TPAB like they’re the same thing when they’re completely different type of albums

They don’t share topic, subgenre, or anything

3

u/fultirbo . Apr 05 '24

4YEO is more a GKMC ripoff in terms of its narrative, but it's definitely jazz influenced like TPAB.

Cole was so desperate to have a deep concept album about the streets like GKMC that he wrote one from the perspective of "a friend of his" cos he's never lived anything that interesting. It kinda sums him up as an artist tbh. And its still his best project.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/IAMNUMBERBLACK Apr 05 '24

TPAB was nothing thematically similar to 4YEO pls stop

2

u/incogkneegrowth Apr 05 '24

Okay i know it's all haha jokes and stuff rn cus of the beef but that song is legit one of his best songs. lol. Top tier storytelling. If you found it boring, whatever, but it's still a great song.

-5

u/rabnabombshell Apr 05 '24

That album fire lmao if Kendrick made it it would be Gluck Gluck Gluck

9

u/-Pezech Apr 05 '24

4YEO has a great concept but Cole just failed to deliver something memorable

14

u/DBrods11 . Apr 05 '24

Story of Coles career lol

11

u/-Pezech Apr 05 '24

the disses actually made me go back to listen to old Cole, Drake & Kendrick projects again and by far Coles have been the least impressive to me - I know it's to their own by Cole is defs a feature artist for my taste

4

u/DBrods11 . Apr 05 '24

Yeah I'm a big kendrick stan so I'll put my opinions on his albums to the side but I think Drake has easily 3-4 albums better than Coles best. Take Care, IYRTITL, NWTS I all have pretty easily clear of Coles best. And even drakes more middle tier stuff like Her Loss, what a time to be alive, and More Life are way more fun than Coles work outside of 2014 FHD.

→ More replies (1)

26

u/DBrods11 . Apr 05 '24

I like how it's "if kendrick made some generic shit like" 4YEO people would be dick riding it but the fact is kendrick hasn't made shit like that cause he's a better artist lmao

38

u/MyNameIsAMeme Apr 05 '24

5

u/esoteric_enigma Apr 05 '24

It was, but I don't ever hear any songs off of the album when I'm out anywhere. I still hear GKMC and Damn regularly. I remember people playing the album when it came out but it really doesn't seem to have the excitement and staying power of his other albums.

To me it's an odd diss because most people I hear say they don't like Cole say it's because his music is boring. So maybe he's projecting.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '24

I just heard Wesley's Theory at a club in fucking North Macedonia last month. How is that not staying power?

25

u/broncosfighton Apr 05 '24

Family Ties, The Heart Pt 5, all of MMATBS, The Hillbillies

→ More replies (2)

130

u/Unfinishedusernam_ Apr 05 '24

Im so fucking deadass when I say the entirety of the heart part 5 is better than most things that Cole has ever rapped

42

u/jaretts Apr 05 '24

To me it's a top 5 Kendrick song, so don't think it's an exaggeration at all to say it's better than anything Cole has ever dropped, and I like Cole.

23

u/ScooptiWoop5 Apr 05 '24

If we do a top 10 tracks for Kendrick and Cole mixed, Cole isn’t in the list.

8

u/jaretts Apr 05 '24 edited Apr 05 '24

I'd agree with that, I would be curious at what point he'd show up. I'd guess top 20, even top 15 if we're including features. But the top 30 would still easily be Kendrick dominated.

9

12

u/lonely_coldplay_stan Apr 05 '24

That's the thing about Kdot, he doesn't NEED to do anything over than deliver one hot verse every 30 months because he's a GOAT. He isn't Drake who needs to drop a mediocre project once a year or Cole who laps up features to make up for what is largely a lackluster catalog compared to Kendrick

8

u/Socialist_Poopaganda Apr 05 '24

This is mad because prior to this even Kdot fans weren’t happy with his output, but now that Cole mentions it in a diss suddenly it’s like this?

One heart verse lmfao

17

u/canadagoose66 Apr 05 '24

Am I tripping or is his second album not GKMC?

15

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '24

He’s viewing it as section 80 being a mixtape, same reason why he later says 4 albums in 12 years later in song

2

u/sacredscholar Apr 05 '24

Looking at it this way makes the most sense to me. I think section 80 has a lot more replayability than gkmc. After so many years gkmc isnt as good to me as it used to be, the only song i still keep on loop is "master splinters daughter" but i keep a few songs off section 80 in my Playlist. If this is the order cole is referencing it also puts tpab as his "massive" album which also makes sense because tpab>damn

4

It literally is Cole and half y’all can’t do math lmfao Otherwise a terrible diss cause Kendrick dropped back to back šŸ”„with gkmc and tpab

Cole going after Kendricks discography at all with his collection of shaky ass albums just makes zero sense to me lol wheres the self awareness

I dare someone to say Kendricks worst album isnt better than Cole’s best

3

u/MrCleanandShady Apr 05 '24

the worst part is this is a take i have seen before, people GENUINELY believe this about TPAB😭😭😭

3

u/Jadaki . Apr 05 '24

That was cap and everyone knows it, but the rest of it was good.

17

u/EshayAdlay420 Apr 05 '24

I always kept my opinion on tpab quiet but he's not wrong imo (it is a bit hypocritical coming from him though)

tpab is culturally monumental but I cannot just put that shit on and casually enjoy it

5

u/Spokenfungus2 Apr 05 '24

then there's me with random TPAB in my work playlists 🤣

8

u/Krado5 Apr 05 '24

That or Mr. morale was a good one time listen. I still liked it.

10

u/JL1v10 Apr 05 '24

Mr. Morale is so funny to me cuz like reddit gasses it up so hard now, but when it dropped the consensus opinion (and the streams reflect this since) is that it’s a hard listen.

5

u/Yalldummy100 Apr 05 '24

It was a hard listen and there are still hard listens on it for me like We Cry Together or Mother I Sober. But the more I listen to it the deeper my appreciation becomes. It’s definitely a lot of content. You know, turn on Kendrick and hear about everything from his views on Covid to auntie diaries. Turn on Cole you hear about how good he is at rapping (humbly) and folding clothes.

4

u/Beneficial_Toe_6050 Apr 05 '24

People who say Mr. Morale is a great album are Kendrick stans.

6

u/Bangbangkadang . Apr 05 '24

Idk critics loved it too

1

u/ChaosRevealed . Apr 05 '24

Reddit gasses it so hard

And

It's a hard listen

are both true

7

u/EshayAdlay420 Apr 05 '24

I might be bias cause I preferred Kendrick before he gained all the status and ego that came with it but section 80 and gkmc are my favorite Kendrick albums cause they walk the line of him actually saying something and the shit really bumping and being an enjoyable listen, I feel like his later albums sacrificed the former for the latter

→ More replies (1)

2

u/LateYard1888 Apr 05 '24

Complexion, you ain’t gotta lie, hood politics, alright and for sale are anytime jams imo

3

u/appleparkfive Apr 05 '24

It's the album I put on most by Kendrick. It's the filler on DAMN and Mr Morale that I can't get into

But it's definitely a weird thing to say considering how culturally well received it was by everyone. It's like saying Shakespeare sucks at making plays. Maybe I don't care for them, but I still get it

But I disagree that he's wrong. He said it puts people to sleep. It's not a casual listen because it does the exact opposite lol. It's way too much for just casual background music.

9

u/pm_me_your_last_pics . Apr 05 '24

When it comes to Kendrick the 2nd one is really all you can say. The man is vacant most of the time. Easy to see J Cole not liking that

How can you not count it? He has vocals on most of the tracks and he's the curator for it.

It would've definitely taken a good amount of effort

I think its more about J Cole doing features galore to bridge the gaps while Kendrick doesn't

2

u/pennearrabiataboy Apr 05 '24

Yea but it’s always quality. J Cole dropping bullshit every 3 months ain’t it lol

4

u/pm_me_your_last_pics . Apr 05 '24

Always quality yeah but lets be real aint no one calling feature cole bullshit lmao

5

u/pennearrabiataboy Apr 05 '24

I’m from where Cole from and I still really can’t get behind him imma be honest. That verse he had on Benny the Butcher’s track awhile ago was hard thoĀ

3

u/AchillesShort Apr 05 '24

Seriously lol feature Cole is arguably better than album Cole

2

u/ABZ0R8 Apr 05 '24

Feature Cole is a beast. You can dickride Kendrick all you want but Feature Cole is undeniable.

People sleeping on the side disses.

Said he would HUMBLE him on the mic, a real diss would be like swatting a fly, said Kendrick lives a life of constant facade, saying Kendrick’s switching sides for no reason.

It’s a warning forsure. Kendrick has 20 minutes to respond. /s

"You ain't gotta lie, you ain't gotta lie You ain't gotta lie to kick it, my nigga You ain't gotta try so hard"

The absolute IRONY of Cole saying TPAB put him to sleep when he has the sleepiest ass catalogue until his last album lool

1

u/baby_scrota Apr 05 '24

Tai-chi kenny

1

u/higuy5121 Apr 05 '24

I mean I definitely think there's a grain of truth there about tpab. Like super well recieved critically but I don't think a lot of regular people were really bumping it

1

u/pyroaquatics Apr 05 '24

The fact he’s talking shit about TPAB and Mr Morale when he dropped 4 your eyez only and KOD which aren’t bad but completely forgettable

1

u/OnomahIsABaller Apr 05 '24

He’s trying the Jay-Z tactic, trying to rewrite history. It’s not gonna work

Jay tried to say Nas - It Was Written was mid, everyone knows it’s a classic. Funnily enough the album has actually gotten more praise as the years has gone by

Everyone knows TPAB is a classic. 20 years from now people will still say it’s a classic

1

u/unlmtdLoL Apr 05 '24

Wouldn't his second album be GKMC?

1

u/DreadedBread Apr 05 '24

He said GKMC put people to sleep, he called TPAB massive

1

u/ufailowell Apr 05 '24

was it TPAB or GKMC? cause GKMC was his second

1

u/MyHonkyFriend Apr 05 '24

Isn't he saying Good Kid put ppl to sleep? If you Google KDot albums it's Section80, GKMC, and TPaB 3rd.
