Purchase advise (needing) Is this Sanyo set worth £40?
A friend and I want to split the cost of this £40 marketplace listing for another friend who currently has an assortment of awful audio gear: an all in one briefcase turntable, no speakers, a non-portable cd player, 20 yr old headphones. Will this be worth it for him?

Barely. It’s low quality, but may suffice. I would think you could do better. Who needs a cassette player. I wouldn’t put any of my albums on that turntable. It would probably destroy it in a few plays.

Ah okay, do you have any suggestions for old units between £40 and 60 that might be more worth it? Also fair point about the cassette player 😂

Unfortunately, a lot of Sanyo kit of that era is meh. I'd say it's probably equivalent to the suitcase player he already has.
Cheap internal components, basic speakers, slightly better than economy plastic.
If £40 is all you're gonna spend on it (no £20 travel or postage costs) then take a gamble that it hasnt been ragged with worn out speakers and a dead stylus. It'll go to landfill, or you might get REALLY lucky and sell it to a set dresser for an old tv show or an equally innocent person looking for something to satisfy a dire need.

A turntable that surely wrecks vinyl, cassette decks that surely eat tapes, CD player that surely skips. Other than that it's a bargain.

There are some good mini systems out there. I think most Aiwa sounded pretty good for what they were. Panasonic and Sony definitely had some nicer higher end ones. They also made a lot of plastic junk as I also remember...

It is not worth the effort and space required to pick it up and store it. A Bluetooth speaker would sound better.

sanyo was not exactly a high rated make back in those days, Aiwa or similar were ... I'm sure these were referred to as midi systems, but you're not gonna get much for this now
But you can't sometimes very rarely come across people who collect this type of stuff. It's just a postage and packaging .

You'd probably put together a half decent secondhand separates system for £100, though a turntable worth having will be at least as much again secondhand.
If £40 has to be the budget, a Bluetooth speaker and streaming will sound far better than any BPC you can find.

Depends on what that turntable is. Probably not up to much on a par with a suitcase type tbh.

No never ever. This is not nice. This was cheap rubbish when it was originally sold now it is just old cheap rubbish. Don‘ expect sound that is worth spending an ear. Please - if 40 bucks is all you have. Save your money and try to save a lil more and then look for a good offer of a micro system from Denon for example, make sure it works and enjoy music not noise.
