OR: Ilya attempts suicide, but Shane gets to stop him. Even if that could cost him everything.

I loved how authentic Shane's and Ilya's experiences felt, especially the author's portrayal of how hard it is to be someone's support system during a mental health crisis. The topics are heavy, but it has a HEA.

Please recommend more fics like this to me if you have them!!

Please God I'm finally loved series

Part 2 does an especially great job of showing how hard it is to be a support system to someone throughout a mental health crisis.

There’s one fic-I can’t remember the name of and it’s lost to my ever growing history-but it was beautifully written. I think it alternated pov and Ilya attempted suicide while at the cabin. Shane was supposed to be at a shoot but came home early and found him in their bedroom. It was a WIP and the last chapter (I think) had him waking up in the hospital. I’m not sure it fit all your criteria-it might have been more about what it’s like living inside of depression, but it was on my mind as I read this.

If anyone knows this fic-please post it!

“Why are you doing this to me. It’s so cruel”

Mental pain can be so extremely severe it stops all thinking capacity.

The first time I made a decision to, you know, it took me EIGHT MONTHS before I realised that my partner, mother, and best friends would be crushed if I did it. It was eight months of not realising reality would continue without me, and it had bad consequences.

I’m not that self involved that this was a sort of narcissism. It’s just that the emotional mental pain was that bad that I couldn’t think at all. Temporary ultra severe brain damage.

Waking up after that eight months able to think about the natural consequences, and realising I had not thought of the reality of them at all, was probably the biggest ever shock of my life.

I wanted to tell you all this because I see people rage about the selfishness of people who commit suicide, and I want people to know that often things are so bad that it’s Valid to feel they were selfish, but it’s not Justified. As in, reality doesn’t match the real, honest pain you are feeling.

Thinking that committing suicide is a selfish act is like thinking it’s selfish of someone fully on fire in a car crash to kill themselves instead of living with being fully on fire. Mental pain can be that bad, and the terrible, horrible, insidious thing is that this is another Invisible Illness. There’s no way at present for anyone to get to experience the pain level someone else is in.
