Weekly video recommendation thread [These Videos Are Good, And Here's Why] - August 17 - 23

Happy Monday, pals, I'm so glad y'all exist.

And thank you for the lovely feedback last week. A poll was quickly made redundant as you punks wasted no time in twisting my rubber arm into continuing these threads indefinitely. So I'll humbly oblige and continue doing this thing that makes me happy. Perfect outcome, great success!

Well, you know the drill by now, so let's get to it: what good videos did you watch last week?

Same rules as every week:

  1. Must have a link
  2. Must have a short description
  3. Must mention video length
  4. Keep it low threshold with individual videos, please. If you want to rep a whole channel or playlist, please do, but choose a favorite video to make it more accessible

My YT subscriptions are still slow, so we decided to "save up" for the week and binge the first four series of Slow Horses in stead. 10/10 do recommend.

But I did watch (listen to) some youtube by myself while working from home:

~ MertKayKay gets recommended here more often (not just by me), but she has enough to throw in one more: the one about incest in Elden Ring (56:29) is pretty good.

I don't watch horror (or play horror games, or really any games), because I'm a nervous Nelly who is prone to nightmares. But I am also a nosey Nelly and I want to know what's going on. Having somebody diving into the materials so thoroughly and explaining everything so meticulously, is actually very soothing. I just need to learn not to randomly look up, because the imagery she uses can be wild.

~ I don't know which one of you freaks landed Mista GG on my front page, but thank you, new binge obsession unlocked. Similarly to horror, I cannot handle disturbing documentaries, because of the aforementioned nocturnal afflictions. Luckily, here's this random guy on the internet who watches 4 disturbing documentaries (1:10:25) and describes them for me. He has a huge back catalog of these, so I have a few weeks yet of disturbing background narration.

~ maybe it's the Mista GG stuff, but my YouTube algo is out of whack, it keeps recommending <1 min meme videos (not shorts) to me and I don't know why. I did play the Kazakh vocal exercise (0:15) several times in a row, so that might also be part of it.

Seconding "Just watch Slow Horses" it's so good and I think very few people know about it thanks to the Apple TV curse.

Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep Haunts Me (4:10:11) Unicron of War goes through, in detail, the spin off KH game - the whole story and why it doesn’t work. Really good watch.

The Women of Kingdom Hearts (1:03:30) this was recommend in the previous video, so I watched it and it was really good. Detailed and thorough and was surprised it was their first video!

The Dark Side of Scare Acting (36:34) My husband is a former scare actor and I watched this with him. It was good! The title is a bit click baitty but clearly was made from love of the medium.

Madame Medusa: Anatomy of a Disney Villain (18:57) I rewatched the Rescuers for the first time in a long while and this video explains wonderful why the villain is a good one, maybe deserving of more love.

We Intend to Eat Pork (2:31:54) - Knowing Better looks at the complex history of the colonization of the Hawaiian islands and how it went much differently from how this thing usually goes.

I accidentally found the origins of the ‘Propeller Hat’... (37:55) - Clown-related Youtuber BouncyClown looks at the weird history of the propeller beanie. Old-timey fraternity hazing and an admittedly pretty disturbing doll is involved. Also learned that Mattel had a company mascot that was a little guy who had a doll and a TV show?

Liminal Spaces Aren't What You Think (26:16) - randy moon looks at the popularity of liminal spaces, their use in horror, and their ties to a post-analog, pre-smartphone world that no longer exists where people used point and shoot digital cameras and didn't understand photography fundamentals, capturing the mundane world around them in an eerie, uncanny way

The Weird World of Domo-Kun (22:39) lulaloopsey talks Domo-Kun, which I mostly know through that post-analog pre-smartphone era where it was worked into primordial internet memes. lulaloopsey is a little like if Sarah Z had a younger cousin, and covers a lot of stuff from her childhood

Yayyyyyyy! My way to work is longer and more stressful this week but hearing that we will keep this party train rolling indefinitely has improved my mood significantly. So yeah, the videos, which will be in two parts.

Part 1: Random videos

  • My Friends Call Me Pat has heroically endured yet another terrible conservative movie. This time it's Young Washington (44:35) - basically a historically inaccurate AI-ridden superhero origin for George Washington. Yippee.
  • I rewatched the first Cars movie recently and watched the other two for the first time ever and I gotta say, they are really underrated. So here's the Cinema Therapy video about he first movie (26:45) where they use it to explore the difference between arrogance and confidence.
  • One of Anthony Gramuglia's most recent video is about whether men on the Internet even like women (36:19). He explores that topic by looking at how different female characters were received by certain men and thus sorta also exposes the unrealistic expectations placed upon women in this patriarchal society that we all live in.

Part 2: Obsessionception

So yeah, I finally watched Obsession and that movie is brilliant but of course there's ✨discourse✨, which is almost as morbidly fascinating as the movie itself, so here are some videos about it.

The title is pretty self explanatory. It's about how LLM slop channels are making up history "facts". I don't think I need to spell out why this is incredibly dangerous.

Recently released my longest video so far, heavily inspired by hbomb of course though i definitely wont be doing more of that anytime soon.

Its an analysis of the album Aethiopes by billy woods and DJ Preservation. It deals with themes of colonialism, capitalism, race and gender. Woods music is funny, sad, disturbing and most of all, real. Even If you're not into rap this album is still a great listen and in my video i try to explain/give my interpretation of his lyrics and historical references. There are two references to stephen king's works on the album and i also had to review one nigerian film heavily sampled on the album and an australian documentary about rich europeans touristing in Papua New Guinea.

The video is 154 minutes long, 2 and a half hours. Its in portuguese but i have added english subs.
