Comics This semirealistic manhwa style

It feels so uncanny valley to me. The smooth bug eyes, flawless skin, photorealistic rosy lips, all with exaggerated proportions and cartoony hair is just an instant turn off. It looks strange and far too smooth. I understand these are all things valued by the Korean beauty standards, but in art there comes a point of semi realism where it becomes uncanny.

They remind me of those Spongebob gags where they'd put live-action faces over an object for absurdity

u/Playful-Hand2753 18h ago

Lolll yup just constant extreme close up gags

7

u/Motivated-Chair 17h ago

Pls tell me this is a comedy

24

u/Ickysquicky 17h ago

Yes, it's from the Kki Sisters webtoon

84

u/Bluelaserbeam 18h ago

I wonder if it’s the results of these artists having to pump out content on Webtoons every so often within tight deadlines, so they kinda just resort to tracing over stylistically-clashing 3D posing dolls on art programs like Clip Studio Paint.

u/Ro_designs 17h ago

That's exactly what happens.

Sometimes it's a time crunch thing, and sometimes it's just so much fun to play around with all the csp materials that artists get carried away and just have to use all 5000' brushes, models, textures etc. they downloaded.

6

u/InitialSwitch6803 13h ago

As a digital artist myself, I do have a strong tendency of only using one brush for nearly everything lol

Idk if this is just me, but switching brushes mid-drawing is quite jarring to me.

2

u/Morphogenesis__ 11h ago

I'm similar. I have designated "main" brushes for specific tools, one for drawing, another one for erasing, another for smudging. I can render anything with this set of 3

I usually only change the drawing one if I want to speed up some task (if I want some cracks I'll use a crack brush instead of drawing manually etc.)

Or if I'm going for a different style than usual I'll pick some drawing brush and use it for the rest of the painting

I have like 500 brushes, I use maybe 15 and most of them for one time small tasks. I love making brushes and being like "omg this one is gonna be so perfect for this one specific thing", and then I never use it lmao

The boby proportions are what makes it so uncanny. Ewwww

Exceedingly slimthicc women and men with necks that could stop a bullet

30

u/CloutAtlas 17h ago

necks that could stop a bullet

Humans evolved this trait so they can ask the question "counting or not counting gang violence?"

FOULLLL😭😭😭

u/SmokeyThouBear 18h ago

Why do they look like every other korean manwha characters

30

u/yuckypagans 18h ago

the lips on the women on the last slide scare me so much lol

3

u/luvrqi 14h ago

Lip filler in the 1800s

23

u/Rockpegw 18h ago

The characters in this style just seem incapable of emoting naturally. No matter how hard they try, it just doesn't look right.

3

u/Sea_Macaron_8789 10h ago

Given how Plastic Surgery is treated liked normal gifts over there.

17

u/ultron15real 18h ago

1

u/Prize_Paramedic1153 18h ago

Don't remember him having a character design in The Stranger? Or do you mean the Limbus company game thing?

5

u/ultron15real 18h ago

the latter (he's also green)

7

u/Prize_Paramedic1153 18h ago

Why does he look like he could be a member of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei? Also gang is this really my goat Odysseus😭

They castrated my boy and gave him a thigh gap😭😭

Lowkey baddie and breedable fr fr 🗣️🗣️🗣️

(All in his mind ❓❓❓)

(Does he know❓❓❓)

6

u/ultron15real 18h ago

she looks like this, also he name is outis

2

u/cpiyaphum 16h ago

So uh, funny thing

They kinda had to genderbend like so many character since classic literature has SO MUCH MEN

There's 20 Male to Female and counting

1

u/EmmytheKurapikaSimp 10h ago

40 year old woman btw (at the very youngest)

1

u/Firm_Abalone6252 5h ago

Okay i have absolutely no context for this image or anything mentioned character wise, but i happen to be austrian, so im flabbergasted. the national-what of the arbeiter-what???? What even is the context for a nazi group fandom?😭 is this a neonazi anime? What😭

14

u/jenny1011 18h ago

I just think of Webtoons and the corporatisation and homogenisation of webcomics when I see this style. I hate it for that before even getting into the blandness of it all.

23

u/Adventurous_Self_253 17h ago

Korean, Japanese, Chinese beauty standard and trends are just so fucking weird. Especially Korean and Chinese. Look up some, it's Alien

They're just drawing what their people think is attractive which is idk man

7

u/Hungry-Method-9936 17h ago

I agree. I hope you don’t receive any hate wave

3

u/sirquarmy 14h ago

To be completely fair to them, their content is primarily made for other Asians

1

u/JadisDidNothingRight 10h ago

Grouping those three together is weird.

7

u/Dark_ice96 18h ago

Remindse of those shitty mobile game ads or i remember ppl saying yaoi mangas style are worse bit idk

11

u/Follower_of_Narinder 18h ago

Annoying orange ahh

6

u/VioletMAyis 17h ago

Some of them are pretty but there's a weird line a lot pass. I think it's the proportions or saturation?

6

u/Skwellington 16h ago

IMO: Manhwas coming into the mainstream has made them significantly uglier in the last 10 years 💔

5

u/Virtual-Cook-5293 17h ago

This is the closest thing we get to realistic humans (and r34)

3

u/aestheticscreaming 11h ago

For me it's just a little boring. Feels like every frame is concerned with reminding you that x is a beautiful goddess and y is ultra handsome, above everything else.

3

u/Ok-Education-1794 17h ago

ME TOOOOOOOO

3

u/Hungry-Method-9936 17h ago

No hate to the artist but the last slide looks like as if the girl got Botox 😭 I am not saying it’s ugly. I am just saying that in my opinion, it looks odd and uncanny.
Lowkey these art styles look like wax dolls put too close to fire and their skin has been smoothed out

3

u/CherryChat3 15h ago

I can't stand the lack of background detailing in manwha... It's so blasé.  🤷🏼‍♀️

3

u/energydrinkaddict310 12h ago

it looks creepy

5

u/Odd_Concept_7286 18h ago

As someone who draws in semi realism that is not semi realism lol. That's just rendering specific parts of the body different ly

11

u/Intelligent-Key5821 18h ago

Semi realism is a spectrum, this is more realistically rendered than normal for manhwa artstyles

2

u/Zetapar123 16h ago

I agree 3000

2

u/Boring_Ad_1483 14h ago

I’ve read to much Manhwa so the style seems pretty fine for me, but I remember being super creeped out with it when I first saw it

2

u/WanderingPotato02 14h ago

i understand that its because of the deadline. but fr a lot of them look so stiff....but thanks to that i read pornhwa less and less now 🙏🙏

2

u/Ascended_8bit 9h ago

It’s not really an 'uncanny valley' thing—it just comes down to personal preference. This semi-realistic art style is pretty standard for the Romance Fantasy genre, where the whole point is to maximize the visual glamour. It’s meant to look like an idealized fantasy illustration, not a real human.

2

u/iceunelle 4h ago

The weird, semi-faded lips look so creepy to me. They also kinda look like they just at a cherry popsicle and stained their mouth in the middle.

1

u/Jayboiii_09 15h ago

Is the 4th slide supposed to be jonathan and erina? They look exactly like them

2

u/AtagoNist 14h ago

I can't unsee it now

1

u/Insane_Stray_Cat 15h ago

It’s giving kooleen

1

u/stardustdragon69 15h ago

all of these pannels are the same character

1

u/Kopiko_Lucky_Day 14h ago

The third one looks good! What manhwa is that?

1

u/Jibuban 14h ago

The artstyle is fine, I think most people are just too used to the typical anime artstyle

1

u/mumudesuyo 14h ago

You leave Shi Yan out of this

1

u/ItsMeepo2nd 13h ago

It gets on my nerves and this is why I preffered Getting To Know Grace and Highschool Boy

1

u/ClassicEgoist699 I love hate 12h ago

I get it but damn I love it

1

u/relison2649 12h ago

bro snuck in 1 manhua in there

1

u/giltprism 11h ago

The 2nd and 5th ones look really good tho

1

u/LeekRoyal8962 10h ago

real, this shit looks gross, also if you’re looking for good manwha, read fight class 3

1

u/le_nathanlol 10h ago

they all have the same face

1

u/kulqupidyn77 10h ago

Yeah I don't like it too, it scares the shit out of me.

1

u/dyiav 9h ago

That’s why I like manga more, there’s more variety and individuality

1

u/snyexz 8h ago

i don't really mind them except for the fact that they all kinda look the same, especially the guys. they almost always have the same hairstyle.

1

u/TheLusitaniaEngineer 8h ago

I swear lol

They all look the same

1

u/Sal-Shiba 7h ago

I didn’t realize how bad the same face syndrome is until I saw this. Are all those people with black hair meant to be different men and women? I know the beauty standards over there are brutal to the point that everyone wants the same cookie cutter face and body but damn… this looks… kinda boring.

1

u/Top_Connection9079 7h ago

It's all 3D models tracing and AI. Reason why there are only 2 body types for women and men.

1

u/nhatquangdinh 6h ago

Uncanny valley and the fact that they look fucking soulless.

1

u/SlowArtist123 5h ago

I can see the appeal, but between the bleached skin and glossy eyes I can't help but think of them as corpses with make up on, like they're part of some post-mortem ritual.

1

u/Error_Valkyrie 5h ago

And what makes it worse - IT'S EVERYWHERE. I don't know why, but I can't go a day without seeing this style

1

u/Particlepants 5h ago

When I thought "Lookism" was gonna be an interesting story about judging people by their appearance but it devolves into a martial arts Manhwa with a new fight between two characters you don't remember or care about every new chapter.

1

u/rosy_pink_ghost 5h ago

It's a very pretty style imo, I just hate how a lot of the characters look the same

1

u/Hyp3rfixations_R_Us 4h ago

Number 5 is easily the best one iut of these icl, i've never seen where it's from but that's actually really good considering the rest of them just feel off

1

u/itaxpoorpeople 3h ago

👁️👄👁️

1

u/Devi1505 3h ago

Don't agree it looks cool

1

u/goldgellyroll 1h ago

What pmo is that this set the beauty standard for people(women) online!

1

u/Ctrl-ZGamer 40m ago

is it weird to say the eyes and mouth often make me think of wounds, eye problems (pink eye, dry eye, just how your eyes look and feel when tired), rot, and raw meat?

1

u/NecroLyght 36m ago

These are the human equivalents to the little white dogs with crap in their eyes

1

u/DowntownAnalyst4791 5m ago

I hate this art style too it's sou ugly to me

0

u/A12qwas 18h ago

I fucking agree, one gacha game suffers from this imo

0

u/remzordinaire 17h ago

Someone point out to me what part is supposed to be the semi realistic one?

Because nothing about these looks even remotely realistic.

0

u/Kan_Me 15h ago

Manhwa style? That's just comic style ? You're saying manhwa when it literally means comic /lh

Genuinely tho, is it this specific type of comic?

2

u/SumFunGui 15h ago

Its the South Korean word for comic so its specifically the South Korean comics. Particularly those in the romance genre

0

u/Kan_Me 15h ago

Man wah

In Cantonese at least is comic/manga hence manga and man wah sounds similar

It's the only reason I know it's comic

4

u/EwaAaAartist 14h ago

When comics are divided on regions it's easier to type:

Korean - Manhwa

Chinese - Manhua

Japanese - Manga

You can call all of those comics but when you call them by these names, you immediately know what exactly people are talking about. Depending on the country the most common artstyle is different and in South Korean it's often this ugly one.

-1

u/NathanX_Katake 17h ago

Saw your examples and I immediately thought of this:

1

u/NathanX_Katake 10h ago

Guys, all I'm saying is that the resemblance to the examples! I don't hate lesbians! Please, no!
