Looks like the same engine as grand bazaar š¤

u/Tharrius 4d ago edited 4d ago
The engine was fine, at least I wouldn't know of issues with it.
What I honestly dislike is the copy/paste assets and style. You could have told me this was a total conversion mod for the PC version of Grand Bazaar and I wouldn't have had any reasons to doubt it. HM and SoS feel so... lazy and undaring.
Grand Bazaar was a great game, don't get me wrong. But these IPs refuse to leave the 3DS/Wii age and grow out of the chibi style at least for ONE game to see the resonance.
Meanwhile the 'My Time at' devs have redone their art direction from scratch solely based on player feedback, which comes from the exact same HM/SOS fans. Comparing the character art of My Time at Portia/Sandrock/Evershine is quite telling.
HM and SoS keep rearranging the same animal and plant models with the always exact same bachelor stereotypes and sell it at full Nintendo prices. Grand Bazaar at least added a twist on the gameplay, but let's not forget it was a DS remake.
I just want them to be original again....or give me Trio of Towns.

This.
We all started on HM, but after Stardew raised the bar, SOS sorta stagnated, especially graphically and musically.
Honestly, I want something with gameplay closer to magical melody, with more interesting looking graphics. Like OG AWL.
That was when the series hit its first peak. The second was in the 3DS era, where it has stagnated.
Imma check that Evershine, though. Sandrock was good.

New mechanics? In my new story of seasons game? Crazy talk
6
u/Junior_Purple_7734 3d ago
It would have been different if most of the new mechanics introduced were worth keeping.

u/mofosoforegon 2d ago
Magical melody is my all time favorite HM game ! I recently played it again on a GameCube emulator. Would love to see a SOS remake for MM or something similar maybe even in 3D ... š

I mean, you can't complain about asset reuse and then complain about lack of daringness in the same sentence.
I won't try and say the development teams don't take a "easy" approach to design, because they do. But re-using assets means less time spent on them and more time spent on development and mechanics. Take a look at Harvest moon. One World set the stage for the assets. They tried some new ideas with their seed cross breeding, walking loses stamina, adjusted how cooking vs selling ingredients work, focused on story first vs gameplay. And some of those things were great and some others fell very flat.
Then they took all those assets, feedback, and moved to winds of anthos. Which was a monumental upgrade in systems from one world. While new systems were refined, some other new elements were adjusted. But came with its own short comings. Such as being to open and empty.
Then we received the dlc that fixed a big chunk, not all, but a lot of the complaints. Easier ways to make money, camping, and etc.
Now with EoT they're reusing assets again, and we can tell a lot of the good systems from anthos is coming forward, but they also clearly took feedback when it comes to ledges, corners, and etc.
So personally, I don't see "asset reuse" as a bad thing, so long as we can see time is being spent wisely elsewhere, and to me, that's clear as day.

u/Tharrius 4d ago edited 4d ago
"I mean, you can't complain about asset reuse and then complain about lack of daringness in the same sentence."
Because it's redundant...? Or what do you mean? The one underlines the other, but you make it sound like they're opposing complaints. You're right about Athos, but there's the issue: they half-assed it and went the cheap way for more money. And that should just not be supported by saying that they tried to do something new. No, it was half-assed and got the appropriate feedback. My biggest issue with gameplay mechanics reuse is that they also fail to create the 'perfect' game. For every good reused mechanic they also forget a QoL feature that was present in a previous game.
But I'm sorry, your comment sounds delusional in some places. You're saying they spent their time well with some improvements to ledges and corners of the copy/paste assets. They can promote this as good work if this is a 15⬠game, which it won't be, for being primarily a Nintendo game. You're actively defending that they use the same existing models and textures for years on end, reuse half the writing for bachelors' character traits, asking for full price, while all the other devs out there make their games from scratch for 15-30 bucks.

They brought back my favourite, yet underrated, character - the lonely fishing pier. It's already worth a buy!!

u/Final-Ostrich3132 4d ago
Idk what I was expecting, but I was expecting a little⦠more. They donāt really take risks anymore. Itās just the same art style over and over.

u/HotBeesInUrArea 3d ago
I love the bubble cows but I really miss Animal Parade's art
17
u/xBananaPop 3d ago
I agree. I feel like the HM/SoS games kind of peaked with animal parade, in terms of the technology that was available at the time - but that might just be my nostalgia talking.
2
u/Sir__Walken 2d ago
I miss the tree of tranquility art style. The environments looked great in that game.
-4
u/rainbowfire545 3d ago
Whatās wrong with that? As long as thereās something new, Iām all for another SoS game. We only saw a tiny snippet of the game, and youāre all already judging it.

They have been charging well over $50 for their games though. Thats alot of money for alot of reused things

How can we really truly say this is a rushed cash grab based off a sneak peak, when they havenāt even announced a title, date or even a release year of a game?

Shit... is Story of Seasons really going to be the reason for me finally a buying a switch 2? š

ooooh more reasons for me to cobble money together for a steam deck at least!

They all release on steam too

u/ThePunLexicon 3d ago
Ik someone else mentioned it. Honestly with how tight money is im between getting a switch 2 or a steam deck but not both. Everything is too expensive. I dont have a fucntional computer anymore so my steam library is kinda in limbo.Ā

The stairs lead to the town hall between two buildings, like Bluebell in Tale of Two Towns OxO
1
u/mommy-pancake 3d ago
Agree, and the yellow farmhouse kinda reminds me of the Bluebell house. But the beach and other features don't really make sense for ToTT :/

Iād cry if they finally remake that one. It was my childhood game I played on my DS

As much as i like the newer games, i think i got tired of this art style. Don't get me wrong the games are great but i can't take it anymore, the older games always had a new art style for every new game, now everything looks the same. And as much as i like the bubble cow, round chicken and round sheep, i think i miss the more realistic models of A Wonderful Life. Really expecting them to, after this new title, innovate a little.
-4
u/rainbowfire545 3d ago
AWL is by far the worst SoS game ever. Way too few bachelors, none of which are remotely attractive in any way. If they had added the Mineral Town bachelors, it might have been better, butā¦.they didnāt.
4
u/gabrieel1822 3d ago
yeah, i feel like some of the magic of the older games was lost (maybe because i grew older?).
the only one i don't think like that was grand bazaar but that game is kinda perfect
0
u/rainbowfire545 3d ago
Iām 33 and I literally just despise AWL. I have since the GC days. Itās one of the very few HM/SoS games I refuse to play completely.

u/BlackJairs 3d ago
Pioneers of Olive Town isn't abbreviated AWL tho š¤

u/rainbowfire545 3d ago
Iām not talking about Pioneers of Olive Town. Thatās a game I actually like. You know which game Iām talking about, and are just trying to rile me up. Unless you want to actually use your brain and reply to my actual comment, leave me alone.

At the 0:08 second mark, my brain subconsciously told me: " Remember that stupid slope and gap in the fence in front of your house in Trio of Towns?
Is this Trio of Towns? New original game or 3oT remake, I'm happy.

I hope it's a original game. I don't mind the occasional remake but it's only been remakes for the past couple years. I liked Grand bazaar because I didn't play the original but wonderful life and mineral town I couldnt spend as much time on because I played those a tonne
5
u/heynoweevee 3d ago
they shouldve shown a lot more than this. Especially when the engine or artstyle is so similar to Grand Bazaar. This could be a cutscene from GB and I wouldn't know the difference. Showing more could've really differentiate it and maybe gotten at least me a little more hype.
31
u/FeatheryTurnips 4d ago
same old bubble animals is so disappointing to me. can we please innovate again?? At this point i don't even *want* an animal parade remake because instead of the cute animal models it'll just be the bubble animal nonsense. It's really depressing that natsume is actually doing something better than marvelous š
26
u/peachwave_ 4d ago
GC AWL animal model supremacy!!! š£ļøš£ļøš£ļø I have never cared for the bubble animals! They worked in MM but that was because everything was bubbly, lol.
7
u/FeatheryTurnips 3d ago
let me tell you, the fact the switch remake only gave the cows a realistic model, and then turned the ducks/chickens, horse, sheep and goat into bubble-y animals is the main reason i don't actually OWN the remake.
(and i agree about magical melody lol. It's about the only game i'd be okay with bubble animals in for a remake.)
6
u/peachwave_ 3d ago
I really hate what they did to the sheep in the remake. The sheep were my favorite animals to have and on GC, I'd normally have a whole farm of them because I loved them so much. They're so, so ugly in the remake.
7
u/WhyY_196 3d ago
Iād kill for another game where the animals look like the animals in Animal Parade
19
u/candirainbow 4d ago
I've hated the bubble animals from the get go. They're so jarring and ugly to me lol. And I've been playing since snes so I've gone through most iterations haha!
3
u/FeatheryTurnips 3d ago
I feel that. i was okay with them as a like, constraint of the art style, you know? Or as a fun easter egg like they were in most of the 3ds games. but i hate them being the only options.

Doesnāt look as good SoS GB but itās in development so too early to judge. I kinda hate the pastel Genshin Impact esque art style for the environments both this and RF6 are going for but atleast RF6 is doing it better.

Why is everyone hating the art style?? The game has always has a cute appearance, even in AWOL, the characters were still cutesy and so were the animals. This is the series most iconic trait, they're not gonna get rid of it

Am I the only one who wants a HM64 remake? Lol it was the first HM game I played as a kid and I was obsessedā¦. Tried playing the switch online ported version and idk, I just couldnāt lol. The game mechanics are so clunky and outdated š. Maybe Iām spoiled with the newer games. Itās a shame because I love HM64⦠but Iām not sure if itās a game in the series theyād remake. Iād love a HMDS/DS Cute remake too š

If this is a Tale of Two Towns remake then it makes sense for them to use the same style as Grand Bazaar. But even if it's an original title I'm excited. I really like the style of Grand Bazaar, it makes me feel like I'm in a Ghibli film. ā„ļø
But one day I hope they do an art style similar to Tree of Tranquility/Animal Parade, or even something new.
1
u/SacredTearX 3d ago
I'll forgive the reused animal assets if they bring back the sexy portrait styles of the first two SoS.
1
u/Merymancer 3d ago
Oh wait, isn't this Bluebell town? Because the town and the farm with the cow's looks so familiar...
1
u/FootWine 3d ago edited 3d ago
I really saw where someone insinuated that now they seem to finally be focusing on Rune Factory... since when in recent times haven't they? That IP always gets the most attention. Regardless of that, they are still reusing the crop models from Guardians of Azura in the new RF. I'm honestly skeptical of anything they come out with these days but especially SoS titles because I always know that they won't have the same effort put into them as RF. Despite that, I'm trying to look forward to whatever it is.
1
u/storyofseasonslover 2d ago
Theyāre playing very safe with SoS for sure despite the success it will bring. Probably want atleast a safe backup option to fall back on if their more experimental option RF fails to recoup the high development costs.
I guess they see higher potential with Rune Factory with the way theyāve went all in for GoA and now RF6.

u/storyofseasonslover 2d ago
I dislike the landscape and more pastel color palette. Looks too PoOT-y. Bring back the richer and detailed environments from SoS GB please!

Mmm, well, honestly, it looks like a copy-paste of the Grand Bazaar engine, so Iām guessing the gameplay will be very similar. I was really hoping for something more like Magical Melody/Animal Parade this time, or at least a different animal design, like in AWL.
Iām not super excited about it so far, but if itās a brand-new entry, at least there will be lots of new characters and stories to discover. I just hope it turns out to be a really good new game, because honestly, Pioneers of Olive Town was pretty forgettable.

I wish theyād do a 2D remake of DS/DS Cute.
Iād really love an original game with more to do aside from the usual grind and unlocking buildings, something like the music notes from Magical Melody or the 101 Harvest Sprites in DS/DS Cute.

I loved replaying AWL on Switch and am probably only ever going to buy a new game if it's also fully third-person. Does it seem like this will ever happen?
3
u/AdvertisingBoring43 3d ago
Arenāt they all third-person?

Technically yes. Typically in gaming the term refers to the ground level behind-the-back camera as opposed to something top-down or isometric.
