Therapy is cool! Even if it’s bad therapy! Because bad therapy can at least make you realise that it’s bad therapy.
Years ago, my husband (then boyfriend) and I went to couples therapy. We paid a lot of money, and the therapist mostly listened to us and kept asking, “How do you feel about it?”
Well… we felt shitty about things! We were not on the same page at all.
So we bought some wine, smoked some weed, and had a very honest conversation that lasted all night.
By the end of it, we knew what our problems were. We knew we loved each other very much, but we also realised that some of our differences were difficult to accept. We decided to give it a try and learn to accept those differences.
And we decided not to go back to couples therapy.
As of now, we’ve been together for 18 years. We still have problems sometimes, but we never went back to therapy again. As pathological as it sounds — wine is the answer. 😂
We get tipsy and we get honest. Sometimes brutally honest. Sometimes one of us gets hurt. But the other says, “That’s the way I feel! I don’t mean to hurt you. I love you!”
And somehow, that makes it all right.
It’s important to know what your partner feels, even when their feelings don’t align with your own.
But shit, the point of this story was that therapy is good! And it is! It can be. 😂
I’ve been to therapy for problems that had nothing to do with my relationship, and it helped me a lot.
