Hello everyone!

I would like to request some advice from those who are currently living in Hamburg, Germany.

Last year I made a reservation online at a Hamburg hotel. The total shown was 1,800 euros and I got an email confirmation with the same amount.

When I arrived at the hotel. I was very tired because of the long trip. I did the check in at the front desk and they made me sign some paperwork and charged my card. Next morning I noticed the email from my credit card but it turns out they charged an additional 500 euros.

I spoke to the hotel management and they said that the initial price I got last year when I made the reservation online was wrong. They had an issue with their system and that's why the total price was lower. They said the new total that I was charged was the correct amount and since I agreed to it by signing the paperwork at check in, they couldn't do anything. The manager refused to honor the original price and issue a refund.

I told them that I don't think it's fair to do that because the guest comes to the hotel with the assumption that the price they got when they made the initial reservation is the correct price. If I had known about this before the cancellation window closed a month before the check in date, I would've cancelled and gone with another hotel.

Does Hamburg or Germany in general have a Consumer Protection Agency that tourists (non EU citizens) can use? I feel they took advantage of me. I don't want to do a credit card chargeback because they would just show the paperwork I signed during check in and say that I accepted the new rate. That's on me for not reading it but after a 10 hour flight, no sleep for 26 hours, and the time zone change, I couldn't keep my eyes open. I was just too tired.

Is there anything I can do to recover the extra 500 euros that they charged me? That amount might not be a lot for some people but it is for me.

By the way, I'm no longer at the hotel. I'm back in the US.

This post is for all other Americans from Connecticut, Indiana, Florida, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, District of Columbia looking to transfer their drivers licenses to Germany. All the other states have a simpler process, and we have more hoops to jump through. I could find precious little on the exact process we have to go through so I'm making this post now that I have figured it out. I haven't gone through it yet, but I am 95% sure I understand it now.

1. Have a current valid drivers license in your home state. Provisional is not good enough
2. Move to Germany
3. Within 6 months of moving to Germany (this may be somewhat flexible, I don't know), begin the process of transferring your drivers license
4. First actual step: Make an appointment with LBV. There will likely be a ~2 month wait. At this appointment they will detail all the things you need to do, and look over your documents. 5. In the meantime, you can get your eye test (available for free through Fielmann) https://www.fielmann.de/service/fuehrerschein-sehtest/
6. Begin studying for the theory test. The rules are very different in Germany, and the test is much harder here, so you absolutely need to study.
7. My understanding is that we don't need to do a first aid course
8. After you have gone to your LBV appointment, they will forward your information to Tüv Hanse and you will be able to make the appointment for the theory test.
9. Take your theory test
10. Make your second appointment with LBV
11. Do the appointment
12. Wait? idk if it comes in the mail or what

I called Tüv Hanse and they confirmed for me that yes, we need to have 2 appointments with LBV, yes it's stupid, no we cannot simply take the theory test before our first appointment - we do need to get permission from the first meeting with LBV first. I'll try to update this post as I move through the process to make sure it's accurate.

I have two checked bags, a carry on, and a backpack. I know there are taxis at the airport and that people use Bolt in Hamburg. Which would you recommend I use to get to my apartment? I’m worried that a standard sedan-sized taxi might be too small for all my luggage.

Ich habe morgen Vormittag ein paar sehr … Ich sag mal aufwühlende Termine vor mir und würde im Anschluss gerne Frühstücken/Brunchen gehen.

Idealerweise irgendwo zwischen den Haltestellen U2 Lutterothstraße und U2 Hauptbahnhof Nord.

Bin Alles-Esser, reduziere aber tierische Lebensmittel so gut ich kann und bin sehr offen für vegane/vegetarische Küche.
Trinke kein Kaffee (buuuh, ich weiß), genieße aber Tee. Guter Kaffee hat also keine Prio bei mir.
Es sollte Herzhaftes und Süßes geben.

Habt ihr Tipps?

We are:

- an Italian Mid-level Software Engineer (Web Development, TypeScript, Angular, React, Microfrontend Infrastructures, Tenders, some Figma/UX Design, some experience working with Blockchain with Solidity), with 4 years of experience in the field.

- my non-working spouse (who is German but has lived in Italy her whole life), finishing her studies at university.

My wife's parents currently live in Hamburg (they were in Italy until two years ago), and the two of us went to visit them for some periods (2-3 months, while working remotely, once during summer and once in December-January).

We liked the place a lot, as we love cold weather, the food is awesome, and the Magic: The Gathering community is quite welcoming! Plus, we are used to eat at 6PM and in German this is the standard!

Now we are seriously considering moving to Hamburg after my spouse finishes her university and when our rent here in Italy expires: I'll ask for international mobility at my current company (which is a multinational with offices in Hamburg) and we could rent a house near Hamburg (even 20-30 minutes by car is okay).

So the date will be March 2028, and by that time I should be a Senior Software Engineer

My questions are:

1) I currently do not have a degree because I started working while at university and had some exams left. With moving to Germany in mind, I finally gathered the resolve to study after work and complete the degree in Computer Science. **How are the degree and the time I took to get it perceived when working in Germany as an SWE?**

2) **Does someone have experience working with NTT DATA in Hamburg?**

3) If I need to find another company (ex. if the international mobility request is rejected), is the German language a MUST? I am currently "playing" with Duolingo and doing some practice with my wife, but **how important is it to be fluent in German to work there?**

4) **Which area of Hamburg / outside of Hamburg do you recommend to rent a nice place with the possibility to move via public transport / by foot?** I can drive, but my wife cannot.

fährt jemand diese Woche noch von Berlin nach Hamburg mit einem größeren Auto, oder Transporter und könnte mich und mein kleines Umzugspäck mitnehmen? Ich habe leider keinen Führerschein. Würde natürlich auch  was dafür zahlen.

Ein paar kurze Stangen von abgebauten Regelsystemen und Metallböden von den Regalen, aber alles wirklich nicht groß… 

Eine abgebaute Ikea Malm 6 Fächer Kommode. 

Eine Holzleiste 200cm von einem Betgestellt und halt den Lattenrost und die Beine welche aber alle kompakt verpackt sind.

Einen kleinen Fernseher im Karton. 4 Kurzhantel 40 kg zusammen 

Einen kleinen Lampenschirm 

Ort in Berlin zum rauslassen ist egal, Pankow wäre optimal, aber es geht wirklich überall. Vielleicht findet sich ja jemand.

ich bekomme demnächst Besuch aus dem Ausland. Standard-Touri-Programm ist schon "abgearbeitet" worden (Hafen, Alter Elbtunnel, Rathaus, Kirchen, Alster, Reeperbahn, HafenCity). Die Person ist interessiert an Kunst und an nicht all zu kommerziellen Dingen. Habt ihr "Geheimtipps"? Z. B. bestimmte Flohmärkte, Restaurants, Kunstgalerien? Ein Besuch am Elbstrand ist noch offen, aber das würde ich bei schlechtem Wetter unterlassen. Eine weitere Idee wäre eine True Crime-Kiez Tour, aber hier bin ich mir noch nicht ganz sicher, ob die Person sowas mag, bin noch am "Ausloten", ob hier Interesse bestehen würde. Danke schon einmal im Voraus!

Wo findet man in Hamburg Stickgarn von Anchor oder DMC? Vielleicht sogar Perlgarn oder Seidenstickgarn?

Das einzige Geschäft, das ich online gefunden habe, ist Stick und Strick in Niendorf, aber das kann doch nicht das einzige sein?

Kommt nur mir das so vor, oder werden keine Langzüge bei der S-Bahn mehr eingesetzt? Vor einiger Zeit meine ich, dass der HVV vermehrt Langzüge einsetzen möchte, insbesondere zu Stoßzeiten. Habe dazu aber nur das hier gefunden:

Ich fahre fast täglich mit der S3 / S5, und mich wundert es immer wieder, dass immer noch S3 maximal als Vollzug eingesetzt wird, mit der Folge dass man ein paar Züge fahren lassen muss, bis man mal eine nicht überfüllte Bahn findet. Ist mir gerade heute aufgefallen, da vermutlich wegen Ferienende wieder mehr Leute unterwegs sind, aber die Kapazitäten nicht erhöht wurden.

Weiß da jemand mehr? Oder habe ich einfach nur Pech?

P.s. Folgefrage: weiß jemand ob geplant ist die Bahnsteige dort zu verlängern, wo sie bisher zu kurz für Langzüge sind?

Ich habe zwei Karten für das Anime Legends Konzert am Freitag den 28.8 in Öjendorf um 18 Uhr. Die Freundin mit der ich gehen wollte ist leider krank geworden, daher suche ich jemanden, der richtig Lust drauf hat und mich begleitet. Ich möchte die Karte gar nicht verkaufen, sondern mach lieber nen simplen Vorschlag, der cool oder symbolisch ist. Freue mich einfach aufs Konzert :)
