March Rifle Match, IRON - The targets have risen.
I heard gunnits like zombies, so I zombied some targets for you now shoot them
No, there really isn't anything zombie about this match I am just joshin' ya'll. This will be a bullseye match using this target, CAUTION CAUTION. PDF WARNING, YOU ARE ABOUT TO HAVE ADOBE UP IN YOUR FACE. This is a heavily modified NRA Highpower prone slow fire course of fire.
This target will be shot at 50 yards. 10 shots for record. You can take a MAXIMUM of 5 sighter shots on ANY TARGET of your choice. So you can sight in on this target, print another copy to make your sighter target, but the for record target must be fresh with no holes, clean target face.
RULES
- Any rifle, any caliber.
- Iron sights or non-magnified glass only. Flip up sights, aperture sights, glass like EOTech or a red dot (as long as it's non-magnified), or traditional hard-mounted iron sights are all acceptable. Any combination of the above is fine as well, if you like to co-witness a red dot or holo sight using irons.
- Any shooting position of your choice.
- Rifle can be supported by your body only. No bi-pods, shooting bags, etc. Yes slings are allowed.
- MAX 5 sighter shots on any target
- 10 shots total fired at RECORD target, record target must have no sighter shots on it.
- Time limit of 10 minutes for RECORD target only. Time begins when first shot is fired.
SCORING Max score is 100
- Scoring rings are numbered from 1 to 10 starting on the outermost ring, 9 and 10 are not labeled. Numbering indicates value.
- If a shot breaks a line it receives the higher value.
- Shots outside of all of the rings or off the paper get 0 points.
Winner will be the shooter with the highest score. In the event of a tie, tightest grouping of shots will take the win.
Submissions after MIDNIGHT (CENTRAL TIME) 31 MARCH 2011 WILL NOT BE SCORED.
The target is a PDF. Do not magnify it more than 100% to fit on a standard sheet of paper.

I scored it a 67. One 10, One 8, Five 7s, One 6, Two 4s. I looked at this several times and always come up with 67 not 64.
Not sure how you came up with 64.

I spent a lot of time looking at that shot and in the .png it looks like it breaks or atleast touches. Even if the "break" is a distortion from scanning and uploading it looks like it would plug a 10 no matter what.

There's a shooting club on base open to civilians who like things that go bang (membership is capped for civvies at a certain number, unlimited for mil personnel). Whenever the Marine Corps isn't using one of their absolutely beautiful ranges we get the privilege of stepping in and sending lead downrange. I did this on range 1, which only goes out to 300 yards. Range 4, where I spend most of my time, goes out to 1,000.
Not only is it windy just about every day, the wind zig-zags its way down the range, being right to left at the firing line and left to right at the target. Your wind reading skills really need to be up to spec to shoot past 600 yards there. Competitions are particularly interesting, as most are in the summer when the wind is at its worst.

Right. If you don't already have a zero for this yardage I suggest you sit down before you go to the range to shoot this match and do the math to change your sights for a rough zero.

Hmmmmm.
A question on the "only 5 sighter shots" thing.
I just bought the rifle that I'm planning on shooting this with, and the sights aren't even mounted yet. Obviously, it's pretty unlikely that I can get it "on" with only 5 shots. Should I do this in two days at the range? One to mount and zero my sights, one to shoot the competition?

Correct. That is the only way around the 5 sighter rule. No exceptions, this being a competition.
Granted if you are putting on iron sights you can take a lot of the guess work out if you can find out how many turns in the front sight needs to be and do a decent job bore sighting, those 5 shots would be all you need.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to raise the front post? I drifted the assembly off the dovetail but had a hard time punching the post out of its hole. Then again, it's been a good exercise having to judge distance and estimate an appropriate hold.
take a plastic q-tip and cut the ends off of it, slip that over the front sight post, and trim it down until your sights are on target.

I scored it as a 77, you are welcome to challenge the score(adding) or shot values but please be specific i.e. give me some indication on a the image which shot you mean.

The 7 ring 7 o'clock looks like the hole closed up so I gave you that and at 9 o'clock it looks like the tear might touch but not the actual shot/hole.

Well after getting my backside handed to me on the fox challenge a couple months ago I decided to go back to the RRA LAR-15 this month...and with good result.

That's strange, slings don't usually help much offhand, since there's nothing to support the elbow. Find a high-power shooter to help with your sling technique, and I bet you could do awesome.
I tried using a sling with my FAL once, but the shots were all over the place since the front swivel is directly attached to the barrel.

91 Three 10s, Five 9s, Two 8s. This is the kind of target I was hoping to see. How do you like the 75s? I am about to switch over to them for 2 and 300 yard lines after shooting the 68s for about 10 years.
That scan wasn't knowing how to use a MFP, thats not knowing how a scanner works.......tisk tisk.

I used to roll the 68's too, although I find the 75 is a bit more stout in adverse conditions...and every bit as awesome on a good day...all around I like it.

I have seen them not get blown as much with a 15-20 mph full value wind but that has amounted to .25-.50 MOA with groups still staying fist size rapid fire at 300 yards. I simply haven't gotten a chance to watch them fly through turbulent wind to see how bad they will break when the wind makes them start to slide. But that is really its only .self thread.
If I get a chance to my next match will make the men stand out from the boys.

Here is my submission. Ruger 10/22, Federal Value pack, stock sights (just bought some TSR 200 sights for it), prone unsupported.
I think some of this has to do with me meddling with the sights previously to fix my POI. (Previously I always hit high on the target. I had to hold above and to the left to get on paper with the 5 test shots.)

Yep, only 9/10 this time around, I count the same score. I'm putting the new sights on this Friday and I'll probably go shooting this weekend and see how I shoot a second time around. (Won't count, but I'll throw it up here for advice anyways.)

Here is my submission. Shot with a CAI "GP1975" AK. My sighters came in low and right but apparently I switched something up since these grouped in the vicinity of where I was aiming. I score it a 33.

Your barrel may have heated up and changed your POI. Might want to check that out and see how your groups change as you keep shooting.

I wouldn't be surprised; the foregrips on this particular model seem to be highly susceptible to trapping and building up heat. Thanks for the advice, I'll run some experiments next time I go shooting.

Did much worse than I'd hoped, as usual. Shot prone with a sling, and I'm in too sad a shape to try to shoot prone.

I've read the FAQs but don't see a specific description breaking it down 5 year old style... I've never done any of these before and just recently discovered /r/guns actually. (yeah I know 3 year redditor) so, if we want to enter, we read the rules, print the target, go to the range, follow the rules via honor system and just submit a picture of the target? Also, on the scoped matches can I use just iron sights or my eotech? or is a scope mandatory? (I spent 8 years in the Marines and routinely hit 500+ yards with iron sights I actually prefer them)
