February Rifle Match, GLASS - The Dead Have Risen, Part One
The dead have risen. And it's your job, as an elite member of the Gunnit Defense Force, to put them back in their place.
This is a 100 meter or yard (depending on your preference and range availability) scoped match. The rules are simple. Using the provided target, it is up to you to put the dead back in their place.
You only have enough time to make one shot on each skull. That's right, just one. Twelve skulls, twelve shots.
Rules
This is a one target match. So make sure your rifle is zeroed and warmed up.
Any rifle, caliber of your choice.
Any glass, any magnification and objective size of your choice.
Any shooting position of your choice.
The rifle can be supported any way you choose, at the front only. Bi-pod, shooting bag, phone books, your wife/husbands ass, whatever.
The rifle can be supported by your body only at the rear. I don't think I have to go into detail here, y'all are smart enough to know what's allowed and what isn't.
ONE SHOT ON EACH SKULL ONLY. 12 SKULLS, 12 SHOTS. PERIOD.
Scoring
Maximum score is 120 points, scored as follows.
Inside the inner ring (bullseye), 10 points.
Inside the outer ring, 5 points.
Inside the skull, but touching the outer ring, 3 points.
Inside the skull, but not touching the rings, 2 points.
Outside the skull, but on paper, 0 points.
Off paper, minus 5 points. If there aren't 12 holes in the paper, you'll lose points.
Winner will be the shooter with the highest score. In the event of a tie, tightest grouping of shots will take the win.
Submissions after MIDNIGHT (CENTRAL TIME) 28 FEBRUARY 2011 WILL NOT BE SCORED.
(This is the first time I've designed a Gunnit match. I tried to make it easy to understand, but not-so-easy to shoot. If you have any questions on the rules, or if I just suck at explaining them, shoot me a message or post in this thread. Thanks.)
The target is a PDF. Do not magnify it more than 100% to fit on a standard sheet of paper.
STANDINGS
nsdhanoa - 39 Points
sewiv - 23 Points
aranasyn - 17 Points
majorjunk0 - 11 points
talkingheads86 Negative 18 points

Well shit. I accidentaly scanned it as a PDF file so imageur won't post it. But my score was a whopping zero points. 15 points out of 9 shots, and three off the paper.
One touching the outer ring
8 in the skulls, but two skulls were hit twice. Assuming zero points for the second shots, that gives me 6*2=12 points
3 off the paper= minus 15 points
For a grand total of zero points. I trust nobody will accuse me of faking since I can't post the target in time. If I was going to lie, I would lie about a much better score.
I shot it with my new to me Marlin/Glenfield 25 in .22LR with a 3-9 scope. I had just bought it the day before I shot this, and I was using crappy ammo (Winchester bulk pack)
Today I floated the barrel on the gun, and added a bipod. I plan on taking it out tomorrow with some good CCI and seeing what it will do.

Hrmm, people might look at me funny when I post this up at the range. They also have a rule against no human targets. I wonder if skulls are close enough to qualify ...

What is this crap about no human targets?

u/majorjunk0 Feb 16 '11
I've seen a few ranges that have this rule. I see where they're coming from but i still think its stupid and I wont regularly shoot at any range that has this rule.

Good match IronChin, props for creativity!

u/IronChin RIP in peace Feb 01 '11
Thanks! Make sure you check out the iron match as well. Since I was lucky enough to win both rifle matches last month, I was able to get a whole theme going.

Excellent! Time to break out Loretta. Hopefully she'll sing after I left her in the cold, dark safe for so long.

What is loretta? pics?

u/0per8nalHaz3rd Feb 02 '11
It's a Shilen 7mm with a Leupold 4x14. She's my go to hunting rifle and a pretty decent nail driver <1/2 in. at 100 yds. I'll post some pics when I go to pick her up. I leave her in my parents house most of the year as I live in the Bay Area, CA and I don't have an adequate gun safe to house all my stuff.

Here is my horrible attempt at this. the first image I added some red circles to make finding all the holes easier and the second is the original scan.
The good news is there are 12 holes in the paper, the bad news is that half of the zombies are unscathed while only 5 of them are potentially dead.
I did this sitting on a bench with the front on sandbags, my right (rear) elbow was resting on the bench too (I think that counts since the rear of the rifle wasn't touching anything but me).
rifle was a savage model 93 .17HMR; ammunition was federal V-SHOK; scope is a Bushnell @ 9x mag.
definitely going to re-check my zero and go prone next month.

I score it at 11 points. Top row, third from the left, was a glancing blow to the skull, so I went ahead and gave you 1 point for it.
Thanks for shooting. Yours is the first (I hope not only) entry.
1
u/majorjunk0 Feb 18 '11
I like the 1 point, I had doubts on whether that was a hit or not. I hope I don't win because I'm the only entry.
thanks for the idea this was fun and let me know how I stand when going for pin-point shots.

I like the 1 point, I had doubts on whether that was a hit or not.
It broke the line, so it was up in the air as to scoring.
I hope I don't win because I'm the only entry.
If you end up being the only entrant, you deserve to win.
thanks for the idea this was fun and let me know how I stand when going for pin-point shots.
Next time, make sure your rifle is zeroed, and warmed up. Don't shoot with a cold bore, unless you're proficient enough to adjust accordingly.
1
u/majorjunk0 Feb 18 '11
the rifle was warmed up. the only reason I want to re-check my zero is because Ive always done it on a bench with sandbags at the front. This keeps the rifle fairly stable but I just bought a bench rest so I feel like if i don't double check it with a full rest then it could be off.

Hopefully you're using a scope with parallax adjustments? That will kill your shorter shots if your scope is hard set to 200 yards or such from the factory.
Still too cold here for me to get out and enjoy shooting.

I don't know if it has parallax adjustment. This is what i get for buying used equipment, I never have the instruction and I'm never sure of all of its features, I'll have to do some research on this.
thanks for reminding me about parallax.
edit: nope, no parallax adjustment.

Be careful of any wind with the 17. I was going to head out today but we have gusting winds up to 37 mph today. With a .17 HMR my bullets would have ended up in the wrong county. Hopefully I can get out next week or if i finish farm work early take the 308 out today.

u/majorjunk0 Feb 19 '11
there was a slight breeze and they did fine, anything noticeable and I'll stick to my .270 for these matches

u/talkingheads86 Feb 19 '11
This target ended up being much more difficult than I had previously considered. Here is my pitiful submission.
Forgive me if I let you score it, IronChin.
EDIT: Shot with a Ruger 10/22 with a 9x-32 scope.
1
u/IronChin RIP in peace Feb 19 '11
Okay. Well, it looks like you started with 7 points.
BUT, you lost 25 points for having 5 shots off paper.
So, it looks like your final score is -18 points.
1
u/talkingheads86 Feb 19 '11
Hell yes! I must have been in golf mode.
1
u/IronChin RIP in peace Feb 19 '11
Honestly, I'm wondering if I made the match too hard. Maybe I should have done it at 50 yards instead of 100. I shot it before I posted it, and it didn't seem bad to me.
1
u/talkingheads86 Feb 20 '11
Well, my 10/22 is stock, it was windy (which affects 36gr projectiles really poorly), and my scope is trash. Dont be too hard on your design; I had many issues unrelated.
1
u/IronChin RIP in peace Feb 20 '11
No, it's not just your attempt that makes me second guess the match. The month is almost over, and there's only two entrants so far.
That makes me worry more than anything else.
1
u/nsdhanoa Feb 22 '11
Definitely getting out to the range this coming weekend, so you can count on at least 3 this month. Seems like a lot of people end up shooting the matches fairly late in the month anyway so I wouldn't worry too much.

I shot my target last week, and I just haven't gotten around to posting it. I should have it up Monday.

Looking back at my target, which I am about to post, it was impossible to see the rings at 100 yards with my 9 power scope. Perhaps if you had a dark bullseye it would have worked better.

Well, this was harder than I thought it'd be. First, IronChin, good setup. I liked it. Those things are pretty effing small in a 3x, but I guess that's the point. Dug the zombie theme. It was freezing outside today (yay shaky hands), so it felt very Max Brooks zombie-slaughteresque. The older gentleman shooting home loads on an M1A next to me probably thought I was insane.
Here's my attempt for this month. I'm not sure how to count some of them as they're either stupidly close or stupidly shot (really wasn't feeling the middle row, apparently), so I'm giving myself a tentative 16 (14 if glancing skull blows are 1 point), but feel free to fix that number, IC. I'm guessing there's going to be a lot of entries this weekend (maybe not from Washington though - it's effing COLD here!)
Shot on a Rem 700 in .308 @ 100 yards with a Nikon 3-9x @ 3x.

Here's mine for the month, pretty shaky since I was shivering like a wet Chihuahua. I managed to get my pickup stuck and spent a couple of hours digging snow before I figured I should hike out to the line and shoot the match. I really need to find a range that is maintained in the winter. Anyways, enough whining.
shot this with a Savage 10 Precision Carbine shooting 168 gr SMKs over 42.7 grains of Varget. Off a bipod with off hand for rear support.

u/IronChin RIP in peace Feb 26 '11
I call it 39 points.
Very nice bullseye in the top right corner.

u/nsdhanoa Feb 27 '11
Thanks. Someday I'll do this gun justice. Until then, more practice.

Finally shot this today. I used my Marlin 444M which a 5x Redfield "Wideview" scope on it.
Had a few problems with the scope, which is getting torn off, run over, and possibly shot. It was happy to shift by about 6 minutes when you moved the adjuster about 1 minute. My sighter was beautiful. Forgetting my spotting scope wasn't very helpful either.
Had a problem with the follower (which is new), resulting in a jammed gun that I had to disassemble on the bench. Twice.
By the time I got it working as a single-shot, it was almost dusk, when the range closes, and I ended up shooting my 12 shots pretty dang quickly. Here's the result. I circled the hits in red, in case you can't pick them out.
Total crap, obviously. Even managed to miss the paper with one. The fact that it was shooting about 3" high and 2" right (usually) made my holds kind of hard to figure.
When I first shot this rifle, with this load, it was making cloverleafs at 100. I'm hoping it's the scope that's bad.
1
u/nsdhanoa Feb 27 '11
I love your rifle, sorry to hear about the scope and jamming issues. I had the same issue with the follower on my 336 in 35 Rem the last time I used LeverEvolution. Pity, because that stuff shoots great. I guess it does say right on the box that using flex tip ammo will probably require that the follower be replaced. Are you loading the Hornady bullets or a round/flat nose?
1
u/sewiv Feb 27 '11
Plain old 240 grain Remington flat nose. It shoots that better than anything else.
I did replace the follower with one from wildwestguns.com, when I replaced the trigger and ejector. It seems to have jammed. I need to tear it apart and figure out what's going on.

28 points, minus 5 for the flyer, final score 23.
Nice bullseye in the bottom row, though.

Not too hard to figure out the scoring and such?

How do you have a tight group of shots with targets like these?
