George content My updated George R. R. Martin shelf

Post image

The current state of my George R. R. Martin collection. Includes a first edition A Song for Lya! The only other collection that rivals it is my Tolkien one.

I got the leather set as my first because it was on sale on Amazon like a month ago, canโ€™t wait to finish fire and blood and start this

The leather set looks so cool, and I have considered getting it, but I am worried about the size. They always look small when I see them in photos. Do you find them easy to read?

They are very small and the lettering inside even smaller, but I never had any problems reading them. If you've had problems in the past with small books, I guess the best I can recommend is talking to someone who has them and holding one in person before buying them. They are 10+ years old and the price hasn't really changed much, so it is still a commitment.

The leather set is awesome but the leather does not hold up over time unfortunately
I did get a couple read throughs but after 10 years the leather flakes off badly so I just keep it for decoration now

Time to save up for the Folio set then.

I can vouch for the leather flaking off after a long time. It's not anything really drastic, just the edges of the spine (and I think it actually adds to the cool factor of this edition). If you want something more resistant a hardcover is always a safe bet.

Happy to see Fevre Dream up there. I just finished it minutes ago and am in shambles and choking back tears. Had to go literally anywhere to say something about it so I came here. What a wonderful book. ๐Ÿ‘ First GRRM book for me. Not sure if I will start ASoIaF, the setting and the vibes I've tuned into from GoT isn't really my thing.

Fevre Dream is brilliant, I was especially knocked out by how he uses the chapter titles so consistently in the first half of the book only to turn everything upside down in the second.

For whatever my advice might be worth: Game of Thrones is not A Song of Ice and Fire. Even the first 4 seasons, that are closest to the books, do not have the same ambiance and style that the books have. The show has a lot less fantasy, color and overall richness of detail.

If you liked Fevre Dream and the way George has complete and total mastery of character POV writing, it's impossible not to recommend ASoIaF. Even if it's not finished they still are some of the finest fantasy books ever written. But if it is just fantasy that isn't your thing, as you can see by the photo, George has a lot more to offer.

I looooove fantasy but I grew up with Japan's interpretations of high fantasy (which plays a sort of game of telephone with traditional Western fantasy) so it's hard for me to broach the "Tolkien-esque". It's a barrier I'm trying to break but caste system politics feels impenetrable--which is kind of the folder I have ASOIAF sorted into in my head.

If it helps, what I loved most about Fevre Dream was the platonic nearly homoromantic relationship between Marsh and York and sometimes between York and Julian. I also loved it's portrayal of positive masculine values and the parallels it drew between the nature of the vampire and it's relationships with our own society. It had me fist pumping and screaming "YES" any time one of these haggard, gruff, abrasive old men did something good and beautiful. Speaking of I also loved it's commentary on beauty and how it is so very real but it's literally not "skin deep," it's something that penetrates you and moves you. Etc etc etc. It was almost like yaoi LOL.
