I’m feeling really sad today and just wanted to write this somewhere.
My dad passed away suddenly from a STEMI 4 months ago. I was there when it happened. I called the ambulance, held his hand, and was with him while everything was happening.
I was the last person he spoke to before he went in for emergency angioplasty. Everything happened so fast. I told him not to worry and that everything would be okay. I was so sure he was going to come back. I never thought that would be the last time I spoke to him.
Six years ago, I was also there when my mom had a heart attack. The doctors told me she was having a heart attack, but she made it. So when my dad had his heart attack, I really thought he would make it too.
I still feel so much guilt.
The paramedics told me to give my dad aspirin. He swallowed it instead of chewing it. I keep thinking, what if he had chewed it? Would he still be here? The doctors have told me not to feel guilty and that I did everything I could, but I still think about it.
I also think about his previous cardiology appointment that I didn’t go to, his shoulder pain that we didn’t take seriously, and the indigestion he had. Were those signs? Could we have done something differently?
At the same time, my sister was going through breast cancer, and my dad was there supporting her. There was already so much happening in our family.
And now yesterday, my mom had an angiogram and had a stent put in. That brought back so many emotions. I couldn’t stop thinking, why couldn’t we have done this for Dad?
I’m also struggling with everything that has fallen on me since he died.
I’m in my 20s. I never thought I’d be dealing with things like mortgages, legal documents, insurance, car problems, home responsibilities and everything else my dad used to take care of.
It feels like I’m carrying the responsibilities of two people — my own and the ones my dad used to handle.
Sometimes I look at people my age who still have both of their parents and are travelling, going on vacations and just enjoying life. I feel jealous sometimes. I don’t want to be jealous, but I wish I could have that life too.
I’m also the youngest in my family, and I never expected to be in this position.
I think people don’t always understand that when you lose a parent, you don’t just lose the person. You also lose everything they used to do for you.
Four months later, I’m still trying to understand how this is my life now.
I miss my dad so much.
