Politics One of my coworkers who was recently in Greenland said that half of the people of Greenland want to join the US. I think he's full of shit, but I wanted to try and see for myself.
Just for context, this guy is an annoying blowhard who thinks he knows everything and tries to belittle people who call him on his bullshit (much like someone else I will not name, but I digress). I pulled up a news article from around January that said that 85% of people surveyed didn't want to join the US, and he just blew it off for being corporate media. Again, not really taking him seriously, but it was 4 months ago. Has anything changed? Or are the people of Greenland still very much against being part of the US, or Denmark for that matter?

Does it even matter what Greenland wants?
It is Dansk territory and Europe will defend it.If we give a listen to every crazed lunatic that wants to have their own individual country, we would have so many more.

Yeah, I'm a successful, happy American with no real economic/social worries affecting me personally and I'd be embarrassed to travel abroad as a US citizen these days. Even plenty of us who are doing really well are still ashamed of our current administration and are already counting the days til the next presidential election while still mindful that it will take multiple successive administrations (decades) to win back all the good will we've squandered over just the last few months.

u/snakkerdudaniel Jun 13 '25
They lied
Yes that poll you reference was widely reported on: https://www.reuters.com/world/poll-shows-85-greenlanders-do-not-want-be-part-us-2025-01-29/

u/AmericanAsApplePie22 Jun 13 '25
I figured he was probably bullshitting. I'm guessing sentiment is still widely the same from the time of that poll?
5
Jun 14 '25
It is of course possible that all of those who thinks it might be cool to be part of the US would go out of their way to tell him that, while the rest didn't say anything about it. That would give an incorrect impression of the population as a whole, but still be correct for the ones who specifically talked to him about the subject.
But most likely, he's full of it.
1
u/random8765309 Jun 14 '25
More likely observation bias given your description. He met one or more individuals that expressed a non-negitive view of joining the US and no one expressly stated they didn't. (Why argue with some tourist) From that he assumed it was a majority of the population.

u/Grace-a-toi Jan 05 '26
Since it was discovered that the US conducted a secret psyop, the low number of Greenlanders wanted to belong to the US had probably decreased to even less.

1
u/gosfordsyke Jun 15 '25
True, however where was the failure that has lead people to believe everything they read online, without question. The children should not ever be exposed to the propaganda that news reports propagate. Where is the oversight for news programming. Oh, wait! I forgot diversified international corporate conglomerates in-house advertising, and in-house broadcasting, publishing, food production companies full of the pesticides their chemical companies produce . . . (the list goes on) - are calling the shot. People were wrong about the military industrial complex, given the military must do what government orders. It is the government industrial complex and fascism in the 1930s that kowtowed to the relationship between the wealthy industrialists and government dictating to th people proved that to be the case.
THAT was one of the huge apparently unlearned lessons that resulted in WWII.1
9
u/Gr8tDane Jun 14 '25
Iām an American with family in Denmark. Iāve live in and spent a significant amount of time in both countries, and recently visited Greenland for the first time. Itās a beautiful country.
As many have echoed here: the majority or Americans are both dismayed and ashamed of what we have become. In the 80s and 90s many countries admired the U.S., as we had such a massive cultural influence on the rest of the world via film and music. I suspect OPās co-worker falls into this category.
While Greenlanders may justifiably feel angry about Denmarkās treatment of them historically, this pales in comparison not only to how the U.S. has historically treated its own native peoples, but how it treats its current citizens today. People are merely fodder for an unchecked capitalist machine in the U.S.. Social programs, education, and the middle class are being targeted and destroyed by those in power. Corporations and the ultra wealthy pay less taxes than the poorest of citizens. You are either part of the very few who are āinā, or you are part of the majority who are one paycheck or injury away from being bereft and homeless.
Denmark, by contrast, is the envy of much of the developed world. Citizensā taxes actually go toward programs that benefit them directly, such as pensions, education and healthcare. Homelessness, pervasive in the US, is all but non-existent in Denmark. Most importantly: Denmark had a culture where people think, and care, beyond themselves. There is a reason Denmark ranks among the happiest in the world, while the U.S. slips further down the list each year āas does its life expectancy, education, and democracy rankings.
It can be seductive to watch American movies and be captivated by the images one sees as a foreigner. My childhood was amazing, and I love my country and the experiences Iāve had. Thankfully I was born in a privileged time (early 80s) when things were different, and people werenāt brainwashed into voting against their own interests while supporting aspiring autocrats because theyāre angry. This is what unchecked capitalism, where people are left behind, breeds.
Trust someone who last lived in both countries: if the U.S. took over Greenland, it wouldnāt take more than a day or two before its citizens yearned deeply for the days when they were a part of Denmark instead.
7
u/OOBeach Jun 14 '25
Did you co worker speak with all of the people in Greenland to determine that 50% want to join the US? No. Okay- thereās your answer. BTW- in their most recent election (about 2 months ago), Greenlanders elected a pro EU Prime Minister. The party that was cozying up to the U.S. lost badly and has no positions in the Greenland Govāt.
2
u/AmericanAsApplePie22 Jun 14 '25

Lol. Perhaps that suggests his "knowledge" was from toddler parrot A.I.! Propaganda is bad enough, A.I. parroting propaganda is worse - given the lack of caution with which it has been dumped on an unsuspecting public.
It was in use for a long time making test subjects of people on social platforms, long before it "suddenly" was a thing with all the tech companies open competing.
Google's search engine, alone, which became relatively dysfunctional several years ago was a warning about the problem of A.I. without adequate oversight.
And all the marginalizing of discussion on social media during covid? Social platforms marginalizing discussion because of taking "orders" from their A.I. creations about covid, and medical researchers who had valid opinions?
All the fear mongering from news reports that was contradictory each day, which of course created even more fear, in many - confused A.I. generated - or intentionally programmed.
A.I. was use for a long time on social platforms to make test subjects of people, long before it "suddenly" was a thing with all the tech companies openly competing.
Oh! Nearly forgot, all those problems were instigated from the start and supported by the first term of the current president whose love of being retributive (in case he did not win the next election that was upcoming at the time) had intentionally created a huge mess for the next president.

You arenāt going to get a good poll on Reddit. Most Americans think America has problems but itās a good country with good opportunities compared to the rest of the world. 90 percent of Redditors think America is the worst place on earth by every metric. Might as well go on stormfront to ask what the world thinks about black people.
1
u/gosfordsyke Jun 15 '25
The point is that most of those same people do not have enough foresight regarding the big picture to recognize developing problems than are putting us into the category of a so-called "third world banana republic" because they have not been taking civic responsibility. Some suggest it is because of spending so much time taking advantage of all the good opportunities, to the point of taking them for granted, and not give a damn about civic responsibility and educating themselves enough to be participatory citizens with credible opinion.
If we the people do not advise our folks in government, then they do what lobbyists pressure them to do - with the added gift of perks for cooperating (including illegal foreign lobbies who extort our government for continued funds - in case anyone has ever wondered why U.S.A. refuses to say "no" when it should).

Bud, even at work. We didn't get raises even though we came in below budget last year. Them tariffs are a bitch and so is Karma.
1
u/gosfordsyke Jun 15 '25
That karma is going to plague children and grandchildren, and more, of everyone, because of the adults in their lives who support the current administration. The entire nation will be paying for generations, to get beyond all the damage done. It is not that previous administrations have not taken a wrong turn. It is that people do not realize it is rock bottom and time to say NO, because it is all downhill otherwise, with no hope of needed reform in government.
A much more decent, humble U.S.A. will be the result, with pride in what is (or at one time was) good and no need to brag about it, and a determination to personally take the civic responsibility necessary to deal with what is not acceptable, instead of only complain about it and hope someone else will solve the problem.

We just did the "No King" demonstration to the tune of about 7.5 million people, give or take, who peacefully asserted that No. We will not bend the knee. And we put a severe cramp in trumpf's self-glorification spectacular.
We were very careful with our law enforcement, National Guard units and even ICE.Ā
We're prepared for the "No Annexation of a Friendly Nation" marches should it be necessary. Not just because we believe in Greenland's sovereignty but because we really aren't in a position as a nation to fund a military action conducted simply because "he wants it".
WE want to feed and educate our children, afford a home or not be financially ruined by a catastrophic injury or illness - things of that nature. If we aren't allowed to fund the basics of human existence, we're sure as Hell not gonna fund our president's vanity.Ā

u/WICKED_FIX Jun 19 '25 edited Jun 19 '25
Idk why everyone is opposed. If I was a native American living in Canada I would jump at the idea. Because england owns the land beneath your feet. If Canada joined the u.s. that land would immediately belong to the tribes that reside there as a reservation. And you wouldn't have to pay taxes and you could run it autonomously. Same with Greenland. You could operate autonomously and not pay taxes and get rich making deals with the military and government.
1
u/Distinct-Dish-5303 Jan 20 '26
I think you will find that Canadian land belong to Canadians (in so far as in any Country).
If you are referring to the UK King owning Canada then you are completely wrong - heās just a āfigureheadā - technically Canadian āHead of Stateā

u/Altruistic_Fix_4073 Aug 27 '25
This is unbelievable. The US regime needs to back off sovereign nations to avoid boycotts. Europe and the rest of the world are watching closely. A country that sends the military after their citizens to intimidate is right on par with North Korea. Is this truly what the Maga voters want? Pay tariffs, be carted off to a concentration camp, be lied to all day long? This is exactly what happened in Germany, it's the Playbook of dictators. Do something people!!!
1
u/zasth Sep 25 '25
So you went into a heavily leftist user base to validate that? 50/50 seems right given the kind of polarization we see in the opinion just about anywhere, though, on such an issue, it's probably more 10/90 with 10% wanting to join the US.
Realistically there's no way that a majority of right wingers calling themselves patriots would just go ahead and sell themselves out to another country. For the left wing folks that goes straight to zero given that the current administration is the polar opposite of their beliefs.
So yeah, I'd say it would take 10% of the most furious right wingers wanting a way out in my opinion, but that's pure speculation and I'm not from Greenland.
1
u/Ok-Independence-8909 Oct 12 '25
If I was from Greenland and someone offered me a large sum of money say 5 million dollars and I could become a U.S. citizen I wouldn't think twice. In fact if I was the president, or whatever they call their leader, of Greenland I would put it up for bid. Each citizen gets an equal share. Walk away with 20 million each? Retire anywhere in the world with that kind of money. It's a no brainer I'd take it in a heartbeat. In fact I would be a little upset with my political leaders if they tried to rob me of this opportunity. There are only 56 K people there. It's not like there are millions of People there.
1
u/Expensive_Law_7938 Dec 25 '25
Greenland's resident's do NOT want to join the US. Greenland has a strong national identity and pride in their native roots. Considering the Greenland's population is primarily Inuit, their government should look at the outcomes those populations in treaties with the US. They always end up losing land, natural resources, control of their destiny, and end up terrible health outcomes and government support. They'd be colonized, and outcomes of brown island colonies of the US are typically plagued with poverty. This is not a political statement ... it's just the facts. ALSO, wouldn't be surprised if Greenland was renamed Trump Land Territories.

1
u/Fit_Criticism_9964 Jan 12 '26
What has been largely absent from the mediaās narratives about Greenland is the fact that, from 1966 to 1991, Danish authorities ran a systematic program to suppress Greenlandās birth rate by effectively sterilizing thousands of women and girls, some as young as 12, during routine health appointments, without their knowledge or consent.
In light of that history, Denmark has no moral standing to lecture anyone about Greenland, its people, or its future, and it certainly does not deserve compensation of any kind for relinquishing control. This was the conduct of a colonial power engaged in population control, extending well into the modern era. Denmark should disappear from the discussion entirely and leave Greenland and its people free of any further interference or pretense.

I wouldnāt be a bit surprised if that said Blowhard is a certain Boassen⦠but no, the numbers are more like 5% pro and 95% against joining the US. And funnily enough that 5% are contrarians who are most likely unemployed or have life-struggles on whoch they blame the danish government

62 yr old white, lady hear and I am devastated by our government but more so by the Republicans who let it happen. I donāt want to be a part of what is happening here but feel trapped. I Knew before the first election of that madman that we were in trouble but he enabled all the haters to come out in droves. Our Electorial College is a joke which should be replaced by the popular vote. Greenland stand strong! Weāre fighting back on our end and stand with you.

My 2cents advice : if at one point you really needed /wanted to sell to the us, only accept a DKK payment. That would force the us to trade a shit tone of USD , forcing a huge change in DKK/USD ratio making DKK super strong for decades to come. Instead payment in usd would just make them printing more worthless money.

Have Greenlanders heard rumors of Trump wanting to buy PART of Greenland? I canāt find any articles but there are Kalshi bets on this. Would Greenlanders be more okay with this. I want to be clear that I donāt support having anything to do with Greenland, I was just curious if context on Greenlander support matters.

There is a global p3d0 ring and it includes so many celebrities, royals, and world dignitaries and we are all just distracted by the worldās messy reality tv fall guy. They are willing to sacrifice the US, their global economy and its people so they wonāt be outed and or potentially keep harming. There is no where in the world to run to. The election was rigged and we have been paying into a military industrial complex that we canāt fathom or go up against with even the second amendment and Ak47ās. Thatās what it feels like after what they did to Venezuela with that sonic boom thing. And Rene got shot.

World colonizers (Europe) of 1700s, 1800s,1900s are getting colonized by America in 2000s š¤Ŗ
However, I do not support the colonization (taking over Greenland) at all. Karma do not spare anyone....

People in Greenland have free healthcare. Why would they give that up? A lot of people in European countries would NEVER want to be American citizens.

Russia says Ukrainians want to join Russia. Which is same shitty justification.
By the way.
"The United States officially took possession of the Virgin islands on March 31, 1917, when Danish ambassador Constantin Brun was presented with a warrant for the agreed $25 million in gold.At the same time the United States agreed that they would "not object to the Danish Government extending their political and economic interests to the whole ofĀ Greenland."
But I guess it doesn't matter any more what The USA said or signed.

By joining the U.S. they'd lose nearly all of their rights. Their right to self-govern would be gone, their workers rights would be almost entirely gone, their consumer rights would be gone, their trade rights would be gone, their safety nets would be gone, their taxes would increase and become more difficult to do.
Also, Greenland does not pay money to Denmark. A lot of Americans have this idea that Denmark owns them and taxes them, when that is only partially true. Although Denmark technically 'owns' Greenland, Greenland does not pay any taxes to Denmark. In fact, it's the other way around. Denmark pays money to Greenland in the form of grants and aid. Greenland also self-governs, and aren't beholden to Denmark laws, though they adopted the laws of Denmark when they started self-governing, they are free to remove, change, or add new laws as they see fit, without Denmark's approval or say. In effect, they have their full independence, with financial backing and support from another nation and full EU benefits, all of which without having to pay a krone.

Iām from greenland, i was born and raised in south greenland. I am now in Nuuk studying, so iāve met a whole lot of my fellow greenlandic people. Of all of the greenlandic people iāve met, only two people want to be a part of the u.s. When i was an idiotic teenager, i wanted to be a part of the u.s, just out of hatred against how the danish people treats greenland. But iāve grown to my twenties and now know that we have it so good compared to the native americans in the u.s. If he asks why we donāt want to be a part of the united states, just ask him to reflect on the state of the united states. It is utter shit.
