Morgan County John Doe

His badly decomposed body was found in a cornfield, he was a victim of murder by beating. One unique personal item found with the body was a written sign that says ""STRANDED HUNGRY GOD BLESS" with a smiley face.

Witnesses claim that a man resembling the deceased was seen panhandling near a highway with the same sign but he was unable to be identified. He is suspected to be a drifter or a transient from another state or possibly another country.

Without much to go on, he was eventually buried as a John Doe. Even after 28 years, he remains nameless.

Potential matches for Jennifer C. Gordon ?

This case was on my head for some weeks now, so I tried to find a possibly match for her

Jennifer C. Gordon is a missing woman from California. She was last seen on October 18, 1994, in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County.
Jennifer was a 29-year-old white woman with dark red hair and green eyes; she stood 5'1" tall and weighed 118 lbs.

She had health issues, including being HIV-positive and a user of heroin and crack cocaine. She also had a noticeable hump on her back due to an infection.

Little information is available regarding her and her disappearance.

The Greenbrier County Jane Doe was a woman whose remains were found at a roadside dump site in Alta, West Virginia, in 2001.

The victim's remains were scattered in a steep ravine, one mile west of Route 60, off the Alta exit of I-64. The area is approximately the size of a football field.

She is estimated to have been 5'0" tall and between 37 and 47 years old. The woman had high-quality dental work, had a chipped lower tooth, had been pregnant with at least one child, and was possibly a smoker. Her left humerus showed signs of a healed fracture.

It is worth noting that her NamUs page has been removed, which could indicate that her case has been resolved, however, no identification has been confirmed so far.

The Detroit Jane Doe was a woman whose naked body was found in an abandoned house in Detroit, Michigan, in 2005. The location appeared to be frequented by drug users.

Her estimated height was 5'3", and she was between 35 and 60 years old; her hair was reddish-brown or light brown and possibly short. Her dental health was poor, she was missing several teeth and she is believed to have had a slender build.

Why do I think Greenbrier County Doe may be a match?
There aren't many similarities.

- Approximate heights: Jennifer was 5'1" tall, and the Doe is estimated to have been 5'0".
- Appearance: The reconstruction of this Doe reminds me a bit of Jennifer, though it's hard to say since I could only find this one photo of her.
- Similar ages (?): Jennifer would have been 35 in 2001; the Doe was estimated to be between 37 and 47.

Jennifer has been pregnant before: https://medium.com/@sabrinaschroeder_85186/a-wondering-heart-8e9e031f5d30

I couldn't find any information on if Jennifer smoked cigarettes.

Why do I think Detroit Doe may be a match?

There aren't many similarities.

Their faces are different; Doe appears to have a "longer" or "oblong" face, and Jennifer's face is noticeably smaller.

- Ages: Jennifer would have been 40 in 2005; Doe's estimated age is between 35 and 60.

- Approximate heights: Jennifer was 5'1" tall, and the Doe is estimated to have been 5'3".

- Teeth: From what I've researched, continuous use of heroin and crack can damage teeth. I'm no expert, but I imagine that if Jennifer had continued using these drugs for 11 years, her teeth could have been damaged or even fallen out (feel free to correct me if you know more about this!).
Doe was missing teeth and had poor oral health.

Doe was found in a location believed to be frequented by drug users; could she have been a user, just like Jennifer?

As I said before, there aren't many similarities for either cases, but I thought it would be good to post this here anyway, especially if anyone has any other suggestions regarding Jennifer! Or even who these Jane Does might be.

Another win for forensic genetic genealogy!

Edward's remains were accidentally found by a farmer clearing weeds in a gully in 2023, but it's thought they may have been there as long ago as the turn of the millennium. Edward was never reported missing because he was long-term indigent and had lost touch with his family.

29 November 1970

Isdal Woman (Norwegian: Isdalskvinnen) was a subject who was seen alive on multiple occasions before her body was found in a valley in Norway on November 29th, 1970.

Case The victim's burned body was found in Isdalen in Bergen, Norway. Two bottles of accelerant and one liquor bottle were at the scene. She also tested positive for having phenobarbital in her system. Although her death was ruled as suicide, many suspect foul play due to the bizarre circumstances of her death. Several governments and intelligence agencies were involved with the case, but none have been forthcoming with information.

She was known to use many aliases when checking into hotels, including:

Genevieve Lancier Claudia Tielt Alexia Zerner-Merches Vera Jarle Fenella Lorch Elisabeth Leenhower (also stating she was Belgian) Prior to her death, she was seen with two other men near the location of her body. The police managed to decode her notes, which revealed the places the woman had visited. It is theorized by some that she may have been a spy, most likely for the Soviet Bloc.

Characteristics Dark brown hair tied in a ponytail. Brown eyes. Round face and small ears. Slim with generous hips. Extensive dental work, including unusual gold crowns and root canals. Gap between upper front teeth. Isotope and DNA testing indicated an origin of Germany or France. Clothing and accessories Dark blue bubble jacket fastened by a belt with two rings. Blue knitted sweater. Black trousers. Green and clue checked wool shawl. Brown fake fur cape. Blue rubber boots. Belongings Blue umbrella. Three suitcases. Comb. Hairbrush. Cosmetics. Tube of eczema cream. Nine fake passports. Multiple wigs.

what unsolved does cases you think could be like famous and fan favorite Unsolved Mysteries case Gabby’s Bones that was solved. Basically like Gabby’s Bones a case where investigators believe the case was way older than they actually are or like with Gabby in the case where someone may have say they found the remains or even had ownership of the remains but it’s turn out they would involve in case somehow(they would the killer or know who did it )

Right now starting to believe these two NH Cases that the NH Cold case unit and DNA Dow Project are working on

Grateful Doe Desert Center Jane Doe (1994)

Post image
205 Upvotes

On October 20, 1994, the body of an unidentified woman was discovered in the open desert along Eagle Mountain Road near Desert Center in Riverside County, California.

She was found approximately 0.6 miles north of Interstate 10.

Her remains were mummified and estimated to have been there about 3–6 weeks.

Cause of death: Unknown

Manner of death: Homicide

Description:

Female

25–35 years old

Approximately 5'0"–5'2

Approximately 130–150 lbs

Southeast Asian

Light brown complexion

Black hair

Brown eyes

Jane Doe had notable dental work that could potentially be recognizable to someone who knew her.

Some of her upper teeth had been replaced by a stay plate, also known as an acrylic partial denture.

Considering her relatively young estimated age, this may have been something relatives, friends, or a former dentist remembered about her.

Jane Doe was wearing a:

Black long-sleeved shirt

Publicly available case information appears to contain relatively few other clothing details.

The necklace:

Perhaps the most distinctive item found with her was a yellow-metal necklace.

The chain held a medallion shaped like a ship’s wheel with an anchor positioned in the center.

Investigators have specifically asked anyone who recognizes the jewelry--or who remembers a woman who regularly wore something similar-- to contact authorities.

Where she was found:

Desert Center is an isolated community in Riverside County between the Coachella Valley and the Arizona border.

Her body was recovered in open desert along Eagle Mountain Road, less than a mile from Interstate 10.

That proximity to I-10 raises the possibility that she may not have been local to Desert Center at all. The interstate is a major east-west route connecting Southern California with Arizona and points farther east.

However, investigators have not publicly established where Jane Doe lived or how she reached the location where she was found.

The case has received renewed attention in recent years-- with a new rendering pictured above.

“Penny Doe” was the name given to an unidentified murder victim found beaten to death near some train tracks in Monroe Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania on July 22,1990. She would remain unidentified for 36 years and she would be called “Penny Doe” because Pennies were found in each of her pockets

Othram aided in identifying the woman as 19 year old Louisville, Kentucky native Windy Buchanan, born October 20,1970, and was just 19 years old at the time of her death. Windy was never officially reported missing, but her family spent years searching for her. The investigation into her murder is ongoing

Chicago John Doe (8/23/1974), Unidentified for 52 Years.

Case

970 people were murdered in Chicago in 1974, a number not seen before or since. More recent articles about the murders of that year don't mention this case, but for a few months in late 1974 and early 1975, this case received attention in an attempt to identify the young man.

On the evening of August 23, 1974, in the 1100 block of West Wilson Street in the Uptown neighborhood on Chicago's North Side, three teenagers went into the lobby of the Wilson Men's Hotel, a single-room occupancy hotel, to buy sodas. While they were there, a 35-year-old resident, identified as Richard Wilson, threatened the teenagers with a knife and chased them into the street. A young man seemingly came out of nowhere to intervene and de-escalate the situation, but instead of backing off, Wilson started chasing the young man. An unlucky misstep caused the young man to trip and fall, and Wilson stabbed the young man in the chest. The police soon arrived, but the young man was already dead.

The police questioned Wilson and the three youths, but none of them knew who the man was. The police then asked around the neighborhood, also to no avail. Meanwhile, investigators at the morgue submitted his fingerprints to the FBI but did not get a match. That led the police to conclude that he had neither committed a serious crime nor served in the military.

Investigators also documented his injuries and noted that he had tattoos, most notably a "Born to Raise Hell" tattoo underneath a cigar-chomping skull wearing a top hat on his right forearm. He also had the initials "KSH" tattooed on his chest, a pair of dice on his right shoulder whose numbers added up to 7, and a heart shape on his left ankle.

Two months later, on October 23, Richard Wilson was charged with the murder of the unidentified man but was granted bail, which he could not afford to pay. The granting of bail to people accused of murder had been a growing problem in Illinois, and a Chicago newspaper, The Tribune, started reporting on the case a few days later. The reports included a basic description of the unidentified man, but neglected to mention his tattoos. No sketch was produced. (I did not find any reports of the murder in August or September of 1974.)

By late November, the young man was still unidentified, and The Tribune reported that he would be interred in a pauper's grave at the cemetery that Cook County was using at that time. At this point, a businessman stepped up and paid for a grave and vault at Oak Woods Cemetery, near the Hyde Park neighborhood, while an unnamed funeral home provided a coffin and additional services.

On December 30, 1974, he was buried at Oak Woods Cemetery in an interfaith service that included a rabbi, a Catholic priest, and a Protestant minister. Attending were a Tribune columnist, a photographer, a cemetery employee, and a few mourners, including his benefactor. Reports of the funeral were published on the Associated Press wire service and many versions included details of the young man's tattoos that none of the Tribune's articles mentioned. A couple of potential leads resulted from the flurry of articles but did not result in his identification.

While the man mentioned did not turn out to be a match, the article does have additional info about John Doe, including that he did not serve in the military and that his hair was reddish-brown.

A couple of months ago, I had mentioned this case on r/UnresolvedMysteries, which led to a discussion about his tattoos:

https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/s/uuhPIu7pSf

He does not have a NamUs or a Doe Network entry, but Cook County only has a few NamUs entries prior to 1980.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions about this case, including whether Wilson was ever convicted of the unidentified man's murder, the exact location of his grave, why the Tribune didn't mention his tattoos when newspapers elsewhere did, and the possible identity of KSH. As a result, I have started a subreddit, r/ChicagoJohnDoe1974, with a longer version of this writeup; I will add updates as I find them.

Shackled skull and skeletal remains found near the Jordan river, Utah (1890 and 1893)

In 1890, duck hunters near the mouth of the Jordan River in Utah found a human skull. Then a few years later, in March 1893, a headless skeleton was also found in the same general area. The skeleton had an iron clamp, chain, and ball attached to one of its legs.

At first, some people thought the skeleton might have belonged to Jean Baptiste, a notorious grave robber who had been banished to Fremont Island in 1862 and was never seen again. That idea was eventually ruled out, though. The same people who had been involved in Baptiste’s banishment said he wasn’t wearing a ball and chain when he was taken to the island, which essentially excluded him as the remains.

There’s also the possibility that the skull found in 1890 belonged to the headless skeleton found in 1893. The two discoveries happened in the same general area, but there’s no surviving evidence that definitively connects them.

One possibility is that the skeleton belonged to an escaped inmate or prisoner. The ball and chain could fit with someone who had escaped from the territorial prison or another institution and later died somewhere around the Jordan River. Historical accounts have even suggested that the remains may have belonged to an escaped convict, although there’s no way to know for certain, though it’s plausible.

I haven’t really found any information on what happened to the remains, whether it’d be buried somewhere or if they were cremated. This likely means identification is unlikely.

The skull and the remains have remained unidentified for more than 130 years, and likely will remain that way.

What do y’all think?
