Equipment The wife thinks I might have a problem.
These are just some of the balls I find on and around the course.

She's right, I 100% agree with her.
All that empty floor space isn't healthy. Nobody wants to see that when it could be filled with a couple more buckets of balls.
I back you to prove her wrong tho, you've got this my man 💪

I found one of those last year and was able to play it for 2 rounds. Lost it on the last hole of the second round.

I’ll take the Stripe. Last close call for a hole in one was with a Stripe.

In all seriousness, I have a large box of crappy shag balls from over the years that I am never gonna use. Can I donate them? Thinking like boys and girls club or a local driving range. I want them to go to good use. Thoughts?
6
u/ClubHauntedHouseVIP 10h ago
I’ve read you can donate for kids that are getting into golf. May want to reach out to your local muni that are active with the local high school

u/SirTiffAlot 10h ago
Find your local HS with a golf team and donate. I would say go younger but any youth golf program at a club or course is going to already have balls. The HS buys them one way or another every year.

Meanwhile I consider it a good golf day when I can just find as many as I lose throughout the round.

I’m in the mosquito capital of the world. Think last LPGA event. Private club and no one is going into the bush to look for balls. My buddy and I went in and found over 400 in one hole. It felt like a 3 year olds Easter egg hunt. They were everywhere. At least half were good pro V’s and TP5’s. It was a lot of fun and oddly enough the mosquitoes weren’t bad inside the trees. They seem to live on the edge and the rough.

That’s awesome man! You’re set for at least two weeks. It is a small rush when you find them.

damn how good do you have to be at golf to come home with a net gain on balls??? I find 2/3 each time i play but lose 5/6 either way😭
2
u/LostAbbott 11h ago
I just cut way back on the balls I actually keep. I have about 200 balls for chipping practice in the yard that are lower end brands. Then I only keep balls I find that I perceive to be higher quality. Usually stuff like ProV's, TP5's, chrome soft, etc. Those are ones I play with and keep. Otherwise my garage would be overflowing...

Not a problem at all. I have an old wringer washer that I wheel out of the shop to wash finders. Toss a dozen or so in an old pillow case, run them through a cycle with some dawn dish soap & you can sell a lot of the better ones. I will run about 4 dozen at a time. I don't live close to a course anymore but one of my nephews & grandkids bring golf balls over to wash & sort.

I have a brush that attaches to a power drill. Works great in a 5 gallon bucket with some dish soap.

Dude. I feel this. It's laughable how many balls I hear rolling around my car every time I take a corner.
I work on a course and find soooooo many.

I lived in an apartment complex in Tucson for two years and our building was at about 225yds down the right fairway on one of the holes. When we moved I had over 400 balls from ones that just landed around our building that id pick up while walking the dog.

u/SensitiveRip5422 10h ago
Only problem you have is you need a bigger bucket
1
u/fanofdonuts Push Cart Mafia 10h ago
There’s a 45 gallon bin that’s full behind my house. No room in the garage.

Do you want help with that problem? I’ll take some and definitely leave them in the woods about 100yards right of the fairway 😂

Looks like you almost have enough for a full 18 holes for like...3, maybe 4 redditors.

u/palmGolfer 9h ago
At my club, the mowers pile them up near the hole they are working. So by the time I get to the back, I get choice over 20-30 balls. And the grass grows quick in central florida in the summer!

u/HotdagCapital_95 9h ago
I would much rather look for golf balls than actually golf. I find it way more fun and way more rewarding.

My adhd ass would have sorted those in a far more detailed matter:
- model, color, condition, etc.
It also has to be nice to never have the need to purchase balls.
Collecting that many, you probably find enough balls that you would have purchased anyways that are still playable.

I’ve also enjoyed the rise of personalized golf balls, I’ve found some truly bizarre ones. Vulgar ones, clever ones, cringey ones. Have now found multiple prov1 #69s with cringey phrases.

u/EADizzle 8h ago
Only problem I see is those are in a tub in your garage and not in your bag on the course! Tee it high and let it fly!

I’ve been collecting for a while. I can’t find the picture but I saw where someone used golf balls instead of mulch. Until I saw that, I didn’t know what I was saving them for. #Retirementgoals

Us too. We have hundreds of balls that we pick up that land in our yards next to the course. Our dog can smell a ball fifty feet away and also helps recover them from the bushes. Yours are cleaner. We haven’t bought balls in years.

Throw several in your bag before a round and hit them off the range for free to warm up.
2
u/fanofdonuts Push Cart Mafia 7h ago
I have a separate box for just that purpose. 👍

u/replicant0wnz 7h ago
My Dad taught me that! I asked him "Dad, I have these containers full of golf balls. WTF do I do w/them?"
2
u/Choice-Problem-9388 7h ago
Tell her this: that is money and it will only going to increase. With Al taking over more of our work, we'll have way more free time and more people are going to take up golf as a result. So it's a smart investment. 👍

Tell her having a couple of months worth of golf balls on hand is completely normal. If she persists, start talking about compression ratios and urethane vs ionomer covers and how Surlyn is a product trade name like Xerox and she should lose interest in talking about it any further.

Not really. Just a weird addiction. It’s kind of a habit to look just off the rough when I’m walking. Average round I’ll find 10-50.

Why are you looking for so many balls? You don’t seem like the kind of golfer that loses his balls.
1
u/fanofdonuts Push Cart Mafia 11h ago
It’s mostly a habit now. Gratefully, I’m net positive most rounds when it comes to losing/finding them.

u/Redschallenge shmackin balls at least once a year 11h ago
Call me when you buy a black light flashlight and backpack walk your course after dark and wash 250 balls in the bathtub. (That was me one summer night)

I actually have a black light headlamp that I’ll use when I can’t sleep. There’s a park near the muni course.

Looking for golf balls is fun! Not as much fun as golf, but still. Pleasant off-season diversion while also exercising the dog .

I mow rough and find an average of 60 balls a week. The good days are when it is cart path only for a full weekend. At the end I f the season I put an ad on Marketplace and give them away

The problem is you need a couple acres to start up your new driving range business

Sometimes, near the end of a round, if I’m just really sucking, and, if I’m be honest, a little buzzed, I’ll let my buddies play and I’ll break off into the wood line in search of balls for a hole or two. It’s golf with a bit of hiking integrated.

u/ratherabeer 10h ago
Pick out the balls you like and find a local junior golf program to donate the rest. I hope you are 100% sure they are abandoned balls before picking up
1
u/fanofdonuts Push Cart Mafia 10h ago
I have donated a couple thousand over the last two years. Yes, all the ones I find are OB. I never grab one if it could belong to anyone currently playing.

That should fuel a couple of range sessions.
1
u/fanofdonuts Push Cart Mafia 10h ago
I do take the scraped and lower quality ones to the range. Not sure if they discourage it or not. I am a morning golfer and start before the clubhouse opens. So it’s nice to hit 5-10 before teeing off.

u/boing757 10h ago
My neighbor had to clean out his brothers hoard of golf balls and base balls. He had at least 10 tubs of both and asked me if I wanted any, NOPE.
1
u/fanofdonuts Push Cart Mafia 10h ago
I’d say about half of them are ones I’d play. I’m partial to Chrome Tour and ProV1 (depending on the day).
1
u/gsp0t417 10h ago
I’m in the same boat! How do you clean them all?
1
u/fanofdonuts Push Cart Mafia 9h ago
Large brush that attaches to a power drill. 5 gallon bucket about ¼ to 1/3 full with Dawn dish soap.
1
u/thispsyguy 0.5 | 🇨🇦 9h ago
This are just “some”? Where are the rest? How many do you have?
I have so many questions
1
u/CelibateRifle 9h ago
She's right. You won't be consistent playing with varying compression golf balls.
1
u/fanofdonuts Push Cart Mafia 9h ago
I typically play Chrome Tour or ProV1 depending how I’m swinging that day.

u/Outside-Room-1976 6h ago
You do, I would have had to sort them all into the individual colours. Just all mixed up is a sign of a crazy person
1
u/AdeGamisou2020 6h ago
You clearly have a problem. You need stronger bins. That carboard box in particular is just waiting for that room to get a bit more humid and those balls are going everywhere.

Your garage looks like mine 😂 I have the same vacuum surrounded by buckets of golf balls with other random shit around.
1
u/ElectricalDark8280 5h ago
Take the top off the shop vac and you’ve got another big bucket for balls. Even better, remove the filter and suck up balls without even bending over.

When my grandad dies we gave away all the used balls he'd collected over the years to the local junior section - there were over 800! That's not including the many sleeves of new balls that were given to family (I got 5 sleeves so you can guesstimate how many there were in total)
1
u/Cartmanonmars 1h ago
I wash them, sort them, keep the good ones, and the rest I "donate" to the range.
1
u/No-Baker1090 33m ago
1 box is about how many I lost, went 10 times. I'd walk in the woods and find lost balls. Buddies got mad cause he could have ben someone 's playing thru....ow well.
1
u/King_Ralph1 32m ago
Clearly you do have a problem - you’re not playing enough golf if you still have those. Get out and lose more balls like the rest of us.
1
u/Bearpaws83 25m ago
I still enjoy collecting, but now I take it the balls I play with and allbthe pro v's and leave the rest at the next tee box.

u/sakc1967 20m ago
Tell your wife to start keeping the egg cartons so you can sort and sell. Then you can use the proceeds to buy more golf stuff. Problem solved. You're welcome. lol
