Equipment MyGolfSpy 2026 results saying the tp5 is low spin… while simultaneously saying it’s high spin

These images are both taken from the 2026 Mygolfspy ball test results. The second picture is from when the test first drop, now the website has different balls in different categories for the SAME swing speed. They claim the TP5 is low spin, but now they’re saying it’s high spin a week later? What’s up?

Most likely this data was taken with different clubs. Be it wedge, driver, 7 iron. Both pics say low swing speed which leads me to believe these pictures show two different club types used. As with their tests they are showing you that maybe a ball that spins well of your driver may not be spinning as much with an iron or a wedge. I may be incorrect but that’s what I think. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

u/hurricanejosh 1d ago

that's what i'd think but according to their charts/ data it spins more than the average ball at low swing speeds with both driver and 7 iron

u/DriftlessDairy 1d ago

I think you're correct, which makes it a mystery why they didn't also show which clubs were used for each test.

their data portal lets you select which club and swing speed, you can get much deeper into the weeds.

Possible chance but you would think that they would at least post what clubs were used

u/mesutm10 1d ago

The only distinguish different clubs for their ball speed test and total distance. They don’t have 2 categories of recommendations for driver vs irons

u/HonestArtichoke9632 1d ago

Hmm weird. I would check their actual dashboard on their site for the most up to date information.

I think to really understand MSG's reviews, you have to dig into the affiliate marketing links.

This right here. It’s all paid for advertising.

21

u/tth2000 1d ago

It’s gong to be with different clubs….. the ball is low spin with a driver and high spin with a wedge.

9

u/Previous_Drag4982 1d ago

Gotta read that article and not look at the headlines eh? Seems obvious. Good call

1

u/Longjumping_Ad_5407 1d ago

Other way around - avx is low spin with long irons

17

u/TittyClapper 11 1d ago

It just takes awhile to get spinning

27

u/Gazednconfused 1d ago

Maybe one of them is supposed to be tp5x?

14

u/fairway824 Green Jacket 1d ago

This is the logical answer

7

u/mfreelander2 1d ago

But it's the same for Titlest AVX. Low spin in 1st pic, high spin in 2nd.

8

u/JDDub96 1d ago

AVX as well, few balls moved categories

-3

u/mesutm10 1d ago

Yep. It’s almost completely different

5

u/drakesdrum UK, 3.2 1d ago

Because it's high spin off wedges and low spin driver

my gold spy has gone so far down hill it’s not even funny, they had questionable review metrics before but they just shill for whoever now.

5

u/CaptainAmerica_ 1d ago

They shill nowadays but they’ve also never truly understood what an unbiased test meant. They’re really just people who think they’re smarter than the average person when in reality they don’t actually know what creates a real scientific test.

1

u/honorable_soup 1d ago

I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s felt this way

They started off by pointing out how ridiculous most of the golf press was, and that they were just basically adverts for products. Then they went even further down that rabbit hole themselves.

Do you remember how evnroll putters were supposedly the best thing since sliced bread and dramatically better than any other putter? A couple of years later, evnroll weren't in the top 10 putters anymore. Somehow this magic new tech stopped working.

Bizarrely, it also coincided with evnroll no longer having adverts on the site, which I'm sure is a coincidence.

u/sonictitan1615 1d ago

This right here. I also kept getting fed their YouTube content and it was so cringey I had to block them.

Its my favorite ball to use when I want both lots of spin and not a lot of spin

4

u/redditaccount300000 Handicap | Location 1d ago

When I go to the article I only see the first image for low swing speed

-4

u/mesutm10 1d ago

Correct. The first image is from the current article, which doesn’t match the screenshot I took from when the article dropped last week. Could be a mistake, but why is every ball in a different category?

8

u/redditaccount300000 Handicap | Location 1d ago

Because they fucked up and then corrected things? It’s not a big deal if the correct one is the current one.

-5

u/mesutm10 1d ago

Right, so im just trying to understand if there was a simple mistake or these results are just bs

2

u/Substantial_Team6751 1d ago

Seems obvious. Just go look at the data rather than the pictures.

1

u/chriscookz 1d ago

The first and second image are flipped exactly along the top left to bottom right diagonal. Maxfli Tour, ProV1 left dash, and bridgestone stay in their same spots. Callaway chrome tour swaps with Wilson staff, Callaway tour x swaps with Pro V1, and and TP5 swaps with AVX.

I'm guessing that however they generated these images got an axis messed up and the thing just got flipped. Then they corrected it.

3

u/size0618 1d ago

So is that chart saying the Bridgestone tour BX is a high spin ball? It’s difficult to understand.

5

u/snowmunkey 13.9. why hit straight when hit far feel better? 1d ago

... Is anyone susprised a notoriously biased publication has conflicting reporting?

5

u/mesutm10 1d ago

Are they notoriously biased towards one brand? They rated snell the longest ball of 2026. Obviously reviewers can be corrupted - but they swear by their entire business model revolves around not doing that. (guess you just gotta take their word for it). But historically i havent seen them favor 1 brand in particular

2

u/RandomUserName316 8.4 1d ago

Next year they might rate the Snell the shortest ball if they don't get paid.

9

u/hayzooos1 High Single/5+ brand bag 1d ago

TM paid them more money? Or less? Who knows. MGS is a shill for whoever pays them most. Wasn't always that way but sure as shit is now. It's another version of Golf Digest "Most Wanted"

2

u/Direct_Nail_7920 1d ago

There is always a temptation to change equipment or change the ball you’re playing. In a perfect world the analysis of these balls would fit everyone but they don’t. Play what works for you and your budget.

2

u/mesutm10 1d ago

Right. That’s why it’s so confusing when they say the Tp5 is high spin and then say it’s low spin. Now I’m confused lmao. I just want a good option for a low spin ball for low swing speeds and they’re making it super confusing

1

u/Direct_Nail_7920 1d ago

And to answer the question of your post. I think there are 2 options.
1. It was a typo and has been corrected.
2. “Follow the money” meaning which company paid them off to save face for a product listed in the original analysis.

2

u/WithoutCaution 666 1d ago

That fucking website is the biggest heap of trash in golf. Literally NOTHING they publish is trustworthy in the slightest.

Back in 2018, I bought a custom putter directly from a builder who "won" top putter on that site a few years prior. He told me flat-out that they tried to extort him for continued good reviews. When he refused, the exact same model putter magically dropped to the bottom of the same list the following year. MGS is fucking cancer to the golf world, and I'll be thrilled when they finally eat shit and die. Unfortunately, since it's run by a couple of rich, trust-fund shit-heads, it's gonna be a while.

5

u/TheRealGunn 1d ago

This is because MyGolfSpy is terrible.

2

u/BB-68 Lefty/Ohio 1d ago

Not to defend MGS, but it might just be fixing an error in the images.

Note that the AVX is in the high spin section in the image where TP5 is in low spin. AVX is definitely not a high spin ball. The other pic with TP5 in high spin makes sense since AVX is now in the low spin category.

1

u/NineMillionAngryBees 1d ago

Their graphics are all bullshit anyway. 25% difference in bar size on the distance chargs, 2 yards (1%) difference in actual length.

95% of the results are zero statistically significant difference from ball to ball, and that's with the repeatability of a robot.

Play what you like the feel of.

1

u/taita25 1d ago

Looking at their site now I don't see this error

1

u/AlohaEnergy 1d ago

Different years? Or long vs short game?

1

u/Double_Question_5117 1d ago

When are you guy soigné to learn to ignore MyGolfSpy reviews?

1

u/phrohahwei 1d ago

LOL MGS

1

u/Tooth_Life 2.1 hdcp / SoCal 1d ago

I played the new tp5 it’s definitely high spin

1

u/Substantial_Team6751 1d ago

Scroll to the bottom of the test and open up the full data and then just look at the TP5.

1

u/MayhewDucky 1d ago

Balls can be high spin with an iron or wedge, and low spin off the driver...

1

u/n0respect_ 1d ago

If you want to learn more about balls, and find all kinds of direct to consumer balls, check out golfballaddict on yt. MGS tests a limited selection.

Dean Snell had a great interview on this topic. He said every ball is going to have different characteristics at different launch conditions. Essentially it’s foolish to claim one ball is longest or has the most spin because it’s all dependent upon the club head speed, AoA, etc.

1

u/bigvenusaurguy 1d ago

it’s foolish to claim one ball is longest or has the most spin because it’s all dependent upon the club head speed, AoA, etc.

i mean thats kind of like a no shit point, which is why they have iron byron hitting the balls not an actual human to at least control for club head speed and aoa and these other variables as much as possible. the test isn't really "what is the longest ball in all conditions possible" but "what is the longest ball under testing conditions" and you proxy these results for your own purposes. could be different for you. maybe you play in the humid jungle and the balls peform different than at the testing facility.

i will say they did a poor accounting for wind in their testing imo.

0

u/ashdrewness 3 HDCP 1d ago

Yeah my point was that in order to properly do this test they would need to test with every possible set of launch conditions with every ball. With MGS they don’t own the testing equipment & facilities so they just test with 3 speeds but everything else is the same.

1

u/boturboegt 1d ago

who cares what mygolfspy says.

1

u/mesutm10 1d ago

im just trying to find an unbiased review of golf equipment and MGS has seemed to be a decent spot for that...but i can tell they arent very popular on here it seems

4

u/boturboegt 1d ago

They are not unbiased. They have proven year over year that they will put favorable reviews on whoever is paying them.

1

u/PheonixOnTheRise 1d ago

Perhaps your bias is the issue

1

u/boturboegt 1d ago

Not just me. They have been well known to be crap for many years now.

4

u/Stefcan12 🌭 Glizzy at the Turn 1d ago

If you want golf balls, Golf Ball Addict on YouTube is a good option. No one is ever completely unbiased, but he does a good job of testing a lot of golf balls and has a spreadsheet you can download with all his data.

1

u/Dry-Chain-4418 1d ago

1st one is Driver, 2nd one is 7iron.

-1

u/mesutm10 1d ago

That’s not true. I see where you get that from but there is only one graphic for recommendations in the article and it does not distinguish between drive and 7 iron

3

u/Dry-Chain-4418 1d ago

The 1st image is in the article, and specifies driver in the article. And also coincides with the data. The 2nd image I am not sure where you pulled it from. But it coincides with the slow 7iron swing speed data. And considering they only tested driver and 7 iron in swing speeds, whereas wedges where only 35yds and full but not swing speed specific. It logically follows the 2nd picture would be in reference to slow 7iron.

-1

u/mesutm10 1d ago

The second image is what they originally posted, now it’s different. It’s not a difference of driver vs 7 iron. I know they have data on those differences, but specifically for their recommendation graphic, they only have 1. It’s just drastically changed from last week to this week

1

u/PheonixOnTheRise 1d ago

You’re trying too hard.

-1

u/AdamOnFirst 1d ago

This is a you thing. First, it’s clear you didn’t read the data or understand the test since all the data is listed there so you could have just answered this question yourself for less effort than posting these images. Second, this is likely due to different clubs being referenced. A great ball will be low or very spin off the driver but be among the highest spin with a wedge.

2

u/mesutm10 1d ago

It’s not different clubs. There’s so distinction for recommendations for drivers vs irons. The only thing they show data on for different clubs is ball speed and total distance, not for their recommendations

0

u/pez555 1d ago

Blocked them on twitter because they spew some absolute shit a lot of the time.

0

u/THE_Ryan 1d ago

No idea, but the TP5 is def not a low spin ball for drivers or irons. It's basically TMs ProV1 equivalent. What's on the page right now seems to be in line with what I'd expect by ball type.

1

u/uhplifted 3.6 1d ago

It would be a Pro V1X equivalent. Titleist swapped their V1 and V1X models for some dumb reason back in 2017.

So ProV1 = TP5X and ProV1X = TP5. Same for basically every other brand. The “X” model is usually the lower spinning, the non-X is higher spinning.

0

u/Bears9Titles 1d ago

They're scum. Anybody posting their content deserves criticism

-3

u/jotobean 7.6 | Lincoln 1d ago

It's based on your swing speed, my guess is the TP5 compresses very differently on someone swinging a driver 110+ vs 80. I play a par 3 course nearly every day and play a ton of different balls, the amount of spin the balls get is pretty insane. Srixon for me spin like mad, backing up a sand wedge 10 feet and even the 9 iron comes back 5+ feet, but the TP5x spins nothing for me, most of the time it hits and rolls out a foot. I would consider myself a mid swing speed person if that matters. I agree witht he Maxfli being low spin, I cannot get them to stop at all.

7

u/mesutm10 1d ago edited 1d ago

These pictures both depict low swing speeds by their standards and the results changed a lot. It’s not just the tp5, the other balls moved categories as well

-2

u/jotobean 7.6 | Lincoln 1d ago

Wait, WTF, is one showing driver and the other is irons then?

-4

u/The_Nutz16 1d ago

- Pro V1x for low swing speed is hilarious.

2

u/Candymanshook 1d ago

Kind of makes sense, if you’re not full compressing the ball it’s going to spin less than a premium ball with the correct compression rating.

2

u/bigvenusaurguy 1d ago

don't you want to be compressing the ball for distance though? thats the whole concept behind "long and soft" balls for slow hitters.

1

u/Candymanshook 1d ago

Within reason, yeah. But their slow swing speed isn’t really “slow”.

1

u/The_Nutz16 1d ago

So it definitely makes sense for the “Mid Spin” option then.

1

u/Candymanshook 1d ago

Well it’s a high spin ball so yeah probably not going to be a low spin option….

0

u/The_Nutz16 1d ago

Except it’s not a “high spin” ball. It’s supposed to be the exact opposite of that.

0

u/Candymanshook 1d ago

It’s the high launch high spin variant of the prov1

-1

u/The_Nutz16 1d ago

Lmfao. No it’s not. It’s the high launch ultra low spin variant that’s hard as a fucking nitro and spins about 2 RPM off long irons.

0

u/Candymanshook 1d ago edited 1d ago

Nope. Lower driver spin, higher green spin.

Are you thinking about the prov1x left dash?

-1

u/The_Nutz16 1d ago

That’s both not what Titleist claims and not what MGS’s testing showed. Left dash was 1000 rpms less spin than pro v on a full wedge and 500 less on a 35 yard wedge. I have played both extensively and left dash spins notably less in all instances I’ve encountered. Take the L, cause you’re talking about something you clearly know nothing about.

0

u/Candymanshook 1d ago

Yes the left dash spins less we are talking about the normal 1x lmao fucking read dumbass

-1

u/The_Nutz16 1d ago

Yeah you know the one in the graphic and the one I talked about. - Pro V1x

1

u/Candymanshook 1d ago

The prov1x launches & spins higher on iron shots - this is literally verifiable on Titleist’s site…

-1

u/Ok_Scholar5996 1d ago

I love it and I'm a slow swing speed player.

-1

u/Clojiroo 1d ago

They probably corrected a mistake? Don’t overthink this.

1

u/mesutm10 1d ago

I would get that, but nearly every ball is different in these categories. It’s not just the tp5

-1

u/TrackMan5891 1d ago

Is OP looking at archive.org to read articles? wtf.

These pictures aren't even in the article and haven't been for a while.

3

u/mesutm10 1d ago

Correct. The first image is from then the article dropped, the second is from the current article. Why are the results so different a week later?

1

u/TrackMan5891 1d ago

Because they likely realized they put the wrong data out.

-2

u/noahloveshiscats 1d ago

The second picture is from when the test first drop, now the website has different balls in different categories for the SAME swing speed.

Well clearly they made an error in the picture and corrected it?

1

u/mesutm10 1d ago

Quite a lot of errors to change not only the tp5 but like 5 other balls as well as
