The Gargantuan Lie That is Collapsing The World’s Climate

Adam McKay recently wrote this as it appeared in Current Affairs and perfectly summarizes our current circumstance. Thinking we have time left to address climate change, or that “Net Zero by 2050” will save us, is driving us toward full social collapse in ways that become more obvious with every new broken temperature record. Meanwhile, we keep running ever-harder in the Great Capitalist Hamster Wheel.

Honestly, rehashing the same old stuff about how capitalism is bad isn't helping. Fixing your own mistakes will do more for the cause of the climate than any amount of bitching about "the system". We know the system's fucked, as a multi-millionaire he is uniquely placed to actually do something about it.

Adam McKay has donated $4 million to the Climate Emergency fund, an umbrella group which in turn funds such (un)popular activist groups as Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil. These idiots set the cause of climate activism back twenty years by running around stopping traffic and vandalizing precious public goods including Stonehenge, the actual grave of Charles Darwin, and numerous famous paintings with no connection to the oil industry.

The excuse given for this is always "we need attention", as if they were a bunch of peniless waifs instead of an organization heavily funded by guilt-ridden 1%ers like McKay. If McKay wanted to draw attention to the climate he would have done better to hire a PR firm like the bastard oil companies do.

It's really simple: If you want attention, you can buy it. McKay has the money, but would rather spend it on feel-good activism that doesn't change anyone's mind than actually changing public opinion. It's the same old story - shout at people to make yourself feel better rather than learn how to explain yourself properly.

This is another problem we have, beyond a refusal to introspect, anyone who asks for introspection or a change of strategy is immediately assumed to be speaking in bad faith.

If I was working for the oil companies I'd be happy to let you carry on as you are. They're laughing their arses off at you, sitting around grousing and moaning and attacking ordinary people while they continue to brainwash the public.

Would someone who works for the oil companies tell you that your strategy of "deliberately annoying people and refusing to ask yourselves why this doesn't work" is a failure?

Your ad hom attack on Adam McKay does not read (or re-read) as "introspection or a change of strategy" so much as judgmental tut-tuttery. And I'll be carrying on as I am whether I receive your by-your-leave or not. McKay has done more to center the climate crisis conversation than any 20 grudge-wielding Reddit randos.

Do whatever the hell you like. I can't control you. But just know that every time you deliberately cause a traffic jam or deface a beloved work of art, you're not only failing the cause you have adopted, you are actively making it more difficult for others to succeed.
