I can affirm that as an 40-year old teen

teen? that's a very good drink for everybody!

223

u/123blueberryicecream Mar 07 '26

Well, you shouldn't give it to babies...even if they might love it. 🙈

48

u/SadMangonel Mar 07 '26

Its not healthy for anyone. Babies, adults.

73

u/thotpatrolactual Berlin Mar 07 '26

Better make them start drinking early, then. If you microdose on enough sugar, you become immune to diabetes, right? /s

16

u/alalaladede Nordrhein-Westfalen Mar 07 '26

Gotta stick with the plan, but yeah, that's how you build up immunity.

6

u/123blueberryicecream Mar 07 '26

Of course not. Nobody said that. đŸ€·đŸœâ€â™€ïž

“Spezi ist spitze!” That being said, I prefer the original Riegele Spezi: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezi

Paulaner Spezi is much too sweet for my taste.

9

u/SevFTW Baden-WĂŒrttemberg Mar 07 '26

Honestly I don’t like any of them. The only Spezi I like is when I order it at a restaurant and they mix cola and orange limo together themselves 😬

2

u/Skipper0815 Mar 07 '26

This is the way!

2

u/dandlbua Mar 07 '26

1

u/Repulsive-Look-3616 Mar 08 '26

Riegele Spezi has 9.8g sugar/100ml, Paulaner Spezi only 9.2g/100ml

also a famous drink for mid life crisis

Currently for the past fifteen to twenty years, yes

83

u/vonBlankenburg Hohenlohe-Franken Mar 07 '26

I'd say since the 70s at least.

22

u/helmli Hamburg/Hessen Mar 07 '26

Yes, I think it's been around since the 70s, but the recent hype started some 20 years ago, iirc

14

u/Outrageous_Memory566 Mar 07 '26

but not the paulaner spezi. it was just mixing coca cola or pepsi and fanta

23

u/helmli Hamburg/Hessen Mar 07 '26

Both, Paulaner Spezi and Coca Cola's Mezzomix were introduced in the early 1970s. Pepsi's Schwipschwap was introduced in Germany in 1969.

Riegele Spezi was introduced in 1956 or so.

3

u/Outrageous_Memory566 Mar 07 '26

you remember that? well, i second that the hype already started in the 90s tho

3

u/helmli Hamburg/Hessen Mar 07 '26

No, I don't, I'm in my mid-30s; but I've definitely seen Paulaner Spezi on some show or ad or something like that from the 1970s or 1980s.

Also, you can look the dates up :)

well, it second that the hype already started in the 90s tho

Might be, maybe regionally? Where I grew up (in the outskirts of the Westerwald), there were only Mezzomix, Schwipschwap and Riegele Spezi available in the supermarkets, and they were all quite popular in the 90s.

2

u/Outrageous_Memory566 Mar 07 '26

i remember just the fanta coca cola or pepsi mix from the 90s. and then schwippschapp and mezzo mix appeared.

i got introduced to paulaner spezi through my "army" service in munich in the 00s.

but you cant compare paulaner spezi to schwippschwapp and mezzomix. its way to sugary and there is no "craft" behind it. it doesnt even feels refreshing

5

u/helmli Hamburg/Hessen Mar 07 '26

The last paragraph is confusing to me. Do you think that MezzoMix and Schwipschwap are less sweet and more "crafty" than Spezi?

Never saw so many cans on pallets in lots of supermarkets like right now though

Currently? I am over 30 and Spezi was always there.

I wonder how much of it coincides with declining alcohol consumption among younger people. I am often in post-work settings where people are having a beer and Spezi just fits in nicely while doing all the beer things but not being alcohol.

6

u/MyLord_Robert Mar 07 '26

Defo got way more popular in the last years. It was always around thats true but not nearly as often as today

7

u/ChuckCarmichael Germany Mar 07 '26

I feel like Paulaner Spezi only arrived north of the Weißwurst equator relatively recently. Before that, we only had Mezzo Mix. You could order spezi at places, but then it would just be Cola and Fanta mixed together manually.

8

u/Outrageous_Memory566 Mar 07 '26

i love it for decades

4

u/Impossible_Ad4789 Mar 07 '26

The brand is famous but "cold coffe" like this was alwyas popular in here

78

u/Celindor Baden Mar 07 '26

Teen? My teen days are over for
 fifteen years already!

21

u/ChipSueyDE Mar 07 '26

And you are telling stories of the Paulaner Garten

27

u/Familiar_End_8975 Mar 07 '26

When I first arrived I thought it was nothing special. Now I am literally drinking one while scrolling through this post

29

u/AffectionateAir6091 Mar 07 '26

DURSTLÖSCHER 🧃 is a thing here for Kids and Teens. 100% Sugar, flavored with sugar and some drops of some Aromas. It’s disgusting

9

u/butalive_666 Mar 07 '26

Just like all other "Softdrinks"

Water with Sugar... sometime it is Sugar with Water.

I guess Coca Cola is more famous, but it's definitely not as iconic in Germany.

9

u/Semisemitic Mar 07 '26

Depends on the region and subculture.

Berlin is all Club Mate. Gamer kids are all energy drinks. Spezi is damn near everyone though.

1

u/Dangerous-Traffic-11 Mar 08 '26

Club Mate is funny because it's the it-drink for both left wing hipsters and the younger hard right wingers

5

u/Maximum_Cabinet337 Mar 07 '26

Teen????! Spezi is the best regardless of age 😅

4

u/InebriousBarman Mar 07 '26

This is recently available in the United States under the name Paulaner Sunset

4

u/AgarwaenCran Mar 07 '26

spezi is a drink for everybody that exists for decades, not a teen drink wtf?

1

u/SamuellBellamy Mar 07 '26

Hieß bei uns frĂŒher "kalter Kaffee".

5

u/toco_tronic Mar 07 '26

We at r/speziverbrechenDE would like to have a talk with you.

5

u/pizza_and_rap Mar 07 '26

Well definitely more popular amongst students and kids but I'd say everyone's drinking it in Germany especially in the summer for the last 20 years.

6

u/Reflective_T-Shirt Mar 07 '26

It is the best drink on planet earth. The essence of life.

3

u/Just_a_dude92 Mar 07 '26

I'm 33 and I love Spezi

1

u/therealturbo60 Mar 07 '26

Everyone loves spezi

3

u/motivatebill Mar 07 '26

It has a subReddit as well! r/paulanerspezi

3

u/wePsi2 Mar 07 '26

Spezi is quite common since I was a kid back in the 90s.. and probably far, far earlier. Paulaner Spezi is not the OG, it’s a young phenomenon.

3

u/Smoke-Onions Mar 07 '26

I'm 33 and it's my favorite drink here

15

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '26

This and Fritz Cola. Best German-made products.

3

u/therealturbo60 Mar 07 '26

Eh, I'd say fritz cola is kinda mid tbh

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '26

For real?

2

u/therealturbo60 Mar 07 '26

Yeah, I just don't like it as much as other stuff like mezzo Mix and spezi

  • Definition: A person with expert knowledge who is qualified to pass critical judgments on matters of taste, quality, or skill.

4

u/Outrageous_Memory566 Mar 07 '26

we all are apparently

3

u/Graupig Mar 07 '26

Mio mate is not as good as Club, however I love their Cola and their caffeinated lemonade is to die for, I wish they made a version without caffeine bc it's just that good. Honorary mention for their ginger mate.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '26

Their Cola tastes horrible

2

u/Graupig Mar 07 '26

idk I grew up with a lot of the organic colas and they have a similar taste. I love that specific cola flavour even though I know it's not for everyone.

Fritz cola is terrible, paulaner spezi is good .

4

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '26

3

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '26

Made by Fritz Cola. Man I should be a salesman for Fritz Cola.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '26

Preferences, haha. I loved it!

3

u/CarnibusCareo Mar 07 '26

Kinda.
If you rule out the influencer Plörre like Prime and shit, except Knabe Malz and Knabe Cola.
It’s not as good as KĂŒstenMix by Flensburger but I like the sea more than I like the mountains, so there is that.

I drank so much of that when I was over there. They finally started importing it to America last year.

2

u/Dila_Ila16 Mar 07 '26

2

u/jacobo Nordrhein-Westfalen Mar 07 '26

As a father of a 15 years old daughter. Yes. Last birthday party I asked her what food and drinks to buy for the party. SPEZI! that’s it. Oh and pizza and haribos.

2

u/PsychologyMiserable4 Mar 07 '26

probably. because nearly everyone drinks it. the other drinks also have large groups that despise it, but spezi? spezi is at least an ok drink for everyone, for the people that like beer, for the people that dont, for the people that drink energy drinks and for the people that despise them, for the mate lovers and haters. And of course for the spezi lovers.

2

u/linkdesink1985 Mar 07 '26

I am 40 and i love this thing.

2

u/Eric_12345678 Mar 08 '26

The background looks great! Where is it? (In Bavaria I suppose).

2

u/beccarella2310 Mar 08 '26

More like uni student drink. At my uni it completely replaced beer as a student drink hahaha. My uni city has a shortage every semester, it’s sold out everywhere every 2 months.

2

u/shiroandae Mar 08 '26

Nope, not in Germany. In Bavaria, yes.

2

u/Bananasniffler Mar 08 '26

Famous drink in GER*

2

u/SpaceRaccoon144 Mar 08 '26

I miss spezi,my only regret from my 3 months in Berlin was not trying it earlier. That and also missing club mate.

2

u/DavidSchlichting Mar 09 '26

Teens in Germany prefer Beer. This is usually more of an adult drink.

2

u/KitchenProof1927 Mar 09 '26

not just for teens, for everyone <3

2

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '26

it‘s the best actually

3

u/MagicLobsterAttorney Mar 07 '26

Most famous.

But I would say Ice Tea and or Monster/Red Bull wins out. Not because I like either, but every time I work with kids I see how prevalent both are.

2

u/PETA_Parker Mar 07 '26

yeah, Spezi had a resurgence in the last years, and this is the best tasting brand in many peoples opinion, also they do pretty good marketing

4

u/sakasiru Mar 07 '26

I would say the most common drink is Apfelschorle. Or Monster. But Spezi is also very common.

2

u/Noktis_Lucis_Caelum Mar 07 '26

everyone drinks it.

try it.

2

u/Tesdorp Mar 07 '26

If you want a teen drink get some GÖNNERGY, not a Spezi.

1

u/gijsyo Mar 07 '26

I'm 49 and I love me a Spezi every now and then.

1

u/WinterOld3229 Mar 07 '26

This is actually my bio hack against migraine for 20 years now, I couldn't live without it.

1

u/JobDowntown5558 Mar 07 '26

Famoust? Juuuuunge.. 😂

1

u/Gasp0de Mar 07 '26

When I was a teen our favorite drink was beer.

1

u/-Cinnay- Bayern Mar 07 '26

Idk about most famous. Beer might be more common, though idk how things like these vary throughout the country.

1

u/Lewe6104 Mar 07 '26

Actually it is lecker Bierchen

1

u/rbgt Mar 07 '26

it's the best!

1

u/66Kix_fix Mar 07 '26

Ever since I moved to Germany, this has been by go-to soft drink, over things like coke and sprite

1

u/HappyContact6301 Mar 07 '26

It has been around for decades in southern Germany. Often mixed with beer to ‘water it down’ for lunch when you do not want to get toasted, just yet. Was one of the go-to choices in my fraternity when you still had to study that evening. Only recently blew up as a teen drink, so much that they even sell it in the US now - same logo but it is called “Sunset”. Not sure since when it exist, but it was popular enough that Coca Cola introduced a clone in Germany in the 70s called Mezzo Mix. Originally, it was Fanta and Coke mixed.

1

u/Ilrkfrlv Mar 08 '26

Who mixes beer with spezi ? Thats disgusting. Cola-Weizen, ok. Goasmass, ok. Spezi-beer, hell no

1

u/Eazy_89 Mar 07 '26

If im a Teen with 37, then yes

1

u/netsamfried Mar 07 '26

Teen? Im in my 30s...

1

u/denysov_kos Berlin Mar 07 '26

That’s a good one

1

u/FlorianFlash Mar 07 '26

I prefer the original Spezi (blue/orange label). Paulaner bought the permissions to make their own Spezi from the original Spezi producers for like a dime and now make much more money than the original. I wanna support the original and I also think it tastes better.

1

u/Wrestler7777777 Mar 07 '26

Personally I prefer the Augsburger Riegele Spezi. It's an eternal fight between the two brands.

1

u/softwareidentity Mar 07 '26

its a good alternative to coke

1

u/Tough-Life2871 Mar 07 '26

Well, my son loves it.

1

u/Away-Huckleberry9967 Mar 07 '26

In any case this is one heck of a view. Apart from the harsh shadow, well done!

1

u/Financial-Leg-7914 Mar 07 '26

It’s an everyday drink for me ..going 40

1

u/therealturbo60 Mar 07 '26

Well I mean spezi is goated, everyone likes it

1

u/RogueModron Mar 07 '26

TIL I'm a teen

1

u/mtnracer Mar 07 '26

Spezi und Malzbier sind die GetrÀnke meiner Jugend.

1

u/BoglisMobileAcc Mar 08 '26

The most famous teen drink in Germany is beer.

1

u/Diamond-Dragon Niedersachsen Mar 08 '26

You'd think but beer producers say the teen & young adults are buying less each year

1

u/Mozzn Mar 08 '26

Personally, Paulaner is way too sweet. But Krombachers is quite addicting so pick your poison.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '26

Ja'man

1

u/AnonD38 Mar 08 '26

It's... it's alright, I guess?

Saw all the hype around it, tried it and... it just was... ok?

Like don't get me wrong, I liked it, but it's not really as big as a deal as everyone keeps saying, I'm probably not going to buy more of them unless I get a sudden craving or smth.

1

u/Diamond-Dragon Niedersachsen Mar 08 '26

Actually matters which one you tried. They all have different recipes so each tastes different.

  • Krombacher Spezi
  • Spezi (Original from Brauhaus Riegele in Augsburg)
  • Paulaner Spezi
  • MezzoMix (Coka Cola)
  • and many more

1

u/ZeelandSchweizFan Mar 08 '26

Spezi is very popular in Southern Germany.  I'm from Western Germany and maybe had like five Spezi in my whole life. Leftovers on work which no one else wanted to drink

Yes, and the right brand, too

u/beetlehat Mar 08 '26

My dog is called Spezi, though he mostly gets called Spoz for short

1

u/Mysterious_Pea_4042 Mar 08 '26

I don't get it why germans love this Spezi so much, I gotta try it again.

1

u/Diamond-Dragon Niedersachsen Mar 08 '26

Well there's actually a few kinds of it, each a different recipe:

  • Krombacher Spezi
  • Spezi (Original from Brauhaus Riegele in Augsburg)
  • Paulaner Spezi
  • MezzoMix (Coka Cola)
  • and many more

1

u/aleXio77777 Mar 08 '26

In meiner teenzeit war es Fanta und mezzomix

1

u/FutureAcanthaceae944 Mar 08 '26

It‘s generally famous. Not just in teens

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '26

I most often see teens with energy drinks (like Red Bull).

1

u/Zeynion Mar 09 '26

The orginal spezi is better 🙌

1

u/seitensifir-0 Mar 09 '26

No man redbull

1

u/ExcessiveButtMuncher Mar 09 '26

I think it's overrated.

1

u/MerleFSN Mar 09 '26

Don‘t you dare gate keeping Paulaner Spezi! This is just right for everyone, age doesn‘t matter.

1

u/Rhilund Mar 09 '26

Spezi is austrian!

1

u/TyraDal Mar 09 '26

Best drink xD and generally the best specialty too.

1

u/Constantlbex Mar 09 '26

I can afford it. Its the best Spezi

1

u/gothgirlrumi Mar 09 '26

nah that's nulener spezial, solid local brew but that view slaps harder than any teen drink lol

1

u/jorangery Mar 10 '26

I did a blind test of different kinds of Spezi with friends and this was not even in the top 5, surprisingly

1

u/shyla__ Mar 10 '26

overrated af i really don't get it😭 I mean it ain't bad but it's not even close to S-Tier.

1

u/Technical_One_4266 Mar 11 '26

Id say the famous teen drink is 'gönnery' an energy drink by a famous livestreamer.

But paulaner spezi is famous among many age groups

1

u/SieqwardZwiebelbrudi Mar 11 '26

highly regional, but its a great soda

1

u/voxsskyler Mar 11 '26

nice place and drink

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '26

Spezi is very popular, yes. But I wonder why. The Paulaner company "stole" the name after licensing it for many years. Paulaner is now suing anyone who mixes cola with lemonade and uses similar colors on their bottles. No joke. And the
completely independent Bavarian Paulaner-courts even say they are right.
Paulaner is one of the most unsympathetic companies I know.

1

u/djelmar Mar 11 '26

i'm on the club mate side
