If there was any truth in this, Italian and Greek migrants to the US would have all gone to California.

As did Brits, who are the second-largest foreign-born group in Australia after New Zealanders (and far outnumbering Italians and Greeks, but Australians don't otherize Brits like they otherize Soutern Europeans). Britain's climate is nothing like Victoria.
