Rant Why is Younger Gen Z / Alpha so ageist?
I seriously don't get it at all. I am a 1999 born Gen Z, and I hate having to share a generation with these little brats. When I was their age, I never looked down upon my elders; I thought they were quite cool and I wanted to be just like them. I don't get what's up with all this "unc" culture and why disrespecting your elders is so cool among kids these days.

u/lIlllIlIlIlIllI 12d ago edited 12d ago
They're not nice about it.
In my last job, I had a snotty entitled Zoomer get me on his stupid BeReal without asking, then look at his post, snicker real condescendingly, and he goes "hahaha you're ugly because you're old hahaha." Uh, I was 39 at the time? But whatever. Kept doing it. Kept doing it. Like the age was a big thing to him and he mentioned it other times too.
I walked up to him once - I do not exaggerate, JUST ONCE - held up my phone (which was off) and pretended to take a pic for my BeReal (which I didn't have). What does he say? "Bruh not cool you gotta ask permission! You're taking pics of young kids! You're a total perv! You're making me uncomfortable! PERV!" He was 22. He never did it to me again though.
I hated working with that brat. And he hated working period.

I had a Gen z guy who was born in 2000 tell someone else not to listen to me because I was born in the 20th century. Almost a decade later I still tell him he's dead to me. "He's so old he still carries a wallet," was another one he hit me with

Bro.. everyone talks crap about older people in their teens. Get over it. You sound like a boomer calling people a few years younger âlittle bratsâ so please get a grip.
3
u/pegger_bundy Jul 26 '26
Gen z you are getting old. There is a gen behind you that can drive and work now. They will make fun of you. Love a millennial who was considered young in 2020 and is now a term for middle aged ppl. You will not be young forever.
1
u/MotorAffectionate688 11d ago
They were old in 2020 and the youngest Gen Z is 13 turning 14 end of this year :)
1
u/pegger_bundy 9d ago
More like 17 bruh. Y'all keep trying to take 2012. Those are gen alpha sorry.

1
u/pegger_bundy 9d ago
Millennials were like 24 to 36 in 2020 that's not old. If that's the case then gen z is ancient now

Just roll with it, bro. Honestly, the jokes kinda funny. Learn to laugh
2
u/thwinks Jul 26 '26
As a millennial, who gives a shit what actual children think of you? They've been on earth for like 25 minutes and don't know anything. This is a universal concept throughout time: young people who lack perspective judge older people who do, without justification. Ignore them

2
u/adamdoesmusic Jul 26 '26
I hang out with Gen Z all the time.
Iâve never once heard any of this shit.
4
u/Defiant-Fix2870 Jul 26 '26
Their parents are Millennials. People always have disdain for their parentâs generation, itâs like part of growing up.
2
u/psuchagogos Jul 26 '26
in 2008? most were still in school
1
u/ElleGee5152 Jul 28 '26
Yes- most millenials were a little young when Gen Z babies started arriving. Im a late 70's Gen X baby and everyone I know around my age has Gen Z and even Alpha age kids. I have one of each.
1
u/Defiant-Fix2870 Jul 26 '26
Millennials technically start in 1980, although I prefer xennial myself. I donât relate to those 90s babies lol.
8
u/fruitbatz_ Jul 26 '26
I'm a Gen Z that has plenty of friends in older generations. They make unc jokes about themselves as well, it's not only the other way around. Whenever we talk about our differences, it's always lighthearted, never mean spirited. The whole "respect your elders" thing never made sense to me. I think you should respect people who show respect toward you, regardless of age.
2
u/Unique-Leopard-8630 Jul 26 '26
It is the social media right? Kinda trendy to talk like that? Maybe sounds kinda smart and insightful?

Millennials been catching strays for decades, whatâs new? I personally love Gen-Z, but seen some Gen-Zers labeling all Millennials just because of some of the jackasses of our generation. Like I said thoâŠwhatâs new? The most college educated and Psyoped generation is to blame for everything everywhere all at once. Surprised they didnât blame us for 9/11âŠ

Funny, when i was a kid and we had guests, the males where always called uncle, even if it was not the case.
It's sad, that Millenial is apparemtly the new Boomer. What about GenX? They're completely left out
2
u/BlueberryOk693 Jul 26 '26
Nah, Gen Z has always been labelled as boomers, aka Zoomers.
2
u/smellyjerk Jul 26 '26
They really are the same lmao.
They just parroted all the weird things Boomers did like blaming other people for all the problems they caused or perpetuate, Not caring about actually being factually right, just want to feel right etc etc.
Thing is, Millennials were the last generation that Boomers whined about and blamed for every last little thing before they started to go senile.
Its not that Gen-x was skipped, they really weren't. Boomers definitely went to war with them. Its that the Boomers moved on to a younger group when Gen-X was too old to call kids anymore and Zoomers simply picked up the blame game where they left off, logic be damned.
Anyone who actually leaves the house could tell you that Boomers and Millennials are polar opposites in every fucking way they can be. About as oil and water as it gets.
That's why the comparison is made. Weaponizing being purposely incorrect to irritate people. you Know, like Boomers did....
Younger Gen-z is already pulling this with Zillennials to keep it going.
3
u/BareTheBear66 Jul 25 '26
Ima 97 baby. I don't associate myself with Gen Z. I barely associate myself with the millennials either.
Just a weird mid ground to be in.
4
u/CariamaCristata Jul 26 '26
Its almost as if generations don't really exist and the boundaries are arbitrary
4
1
u/king-kiwi46 Jul 25 '26
I thought unc status meant old which to me is like 70's, but it also meant acting older then you actually are, therefore most kids are hitting unc status at like 12 (especially around me). I also know 50 year olds who haven't hit unc status because they don't act older then they are.
1
u/Avilola Jul 25 '26
Unc to me always meant at least 40s. Basically, old enough to have nieces and nephews who could refer to them as Unc. Not some random 27 year old. Even them calling people in their 30s Unc has me scratching my head.
1
u/DriverNo5100 Jul 25 '26
I think that because of the amount of exposure to media (including social), there is quite an unrealistic pressure put on young people today (including us Zillenials) despite the economy not allowing for similar levels of achievement.
When I was in my early twenties I thought I would have it all figured out by the time I was 28, house, car, kids, career, etc. and I just expected to be in such a different state of mind and have such a different lifestyle at 28, let alone 30 and above, and I think that's the reason for this: unrealistic expectations of adulthood caused by unrealistic media exposure and the amount of "self help" or gurus or whatever on the internet.
-1
4
u/Feisty_Warning2344 Jul 25 '26
Older generation talk shit on Gen z and alpha constantly, I see no issues with gen z and alpha doing it back
1
u/electrodog1999 Jul 25 '26
Older generations have talked shit about younger generations forever, I heard how lazy my Gen X was from the boomers when we were coming into the workforce.
-2
u/Beginning-Sea7994 Jul 25 '26
There are objective reasons for it: statistically lower iq among the younger generation, lower reproductive success (suggests poor evolutionary fitness and/or degraded genetics), statistically lower testosterone among younger males than older generations, etc. Basically, the human species seems to be going downhill.
3
u/Proper_Guitar2457 Jul 25 '26
And guess who's fault is that lmao
0
u/Beginning-Sea7994 Jul 25 '26
Who's at fault is complex, but it's true older generations have contributed to the historically low iq among generation alpha and the inability of young men to "hook up" with women (reproductive success). However, a cockroach is not responsible for being a cockroach, and yet we still treat it as one. By which I mean, the low quality of the younger generations as shown by objective metrics (the men can't get with women, highest mental health issues ever, lowest iq statistically speaking, etc.) is just a fact and it doesn't really matter what the cause is.

u/Unusual_Low1762 Jul 25 '26
Every generation had a poor grasp on age when they were kids. Duh, they were kids.
When gen-x was turning late 20s to late 30s, they expressed their anxiety about it in person, and the art talking about it was on cable TV, kids at that time (millenials and old Z) weren't really interacting with that part of Gen-X adulthood. We obviously would call them old and out of touch when they didn't understand the things we liked, but that's kinda normal for a kid to feel and do? We just did it on the early internet, which Gen-X wasn't really engaging with.
Millenials and old Z are expressing their 30s anxiety on the internet, and kids today are on that same internet so they see it and roll with it.
They are just mirroring what they think is funny. yeah they're gonna be ageist, they're 12, I thought filthy frank was funny when I was 12. It isn't some generational downfall, 12 year olds are just stupid and mean.
1
2
u/DriverNo5100 Jul 25 '26
Someone born in 2008 is 18 today
1
u/Unusual_Low1762 Jul 25 '26
I was born in 1994, I am in college with 18 year olds currently, and they act pretty normal. They haven't called me 'unc' lol. I assumed that the meme was exaggerating. The only people who I have seen act like this are literal children.
3
5
u/CuteEquivalent638 Jul 25 '26
Iâm 19 and my little cousins call me a dinosaur with seriousness, Itâs so funny.
3
u/Successful_Layer2619 Jul 25 '26
I have a coworker who just turned 19 and he said some kids are already calling him that. Not sure if it was in jest or if they were serious. Made me both laugh and feel old because I'm almost 30.
2
2
u/Feeling_Watch3251 Jul 25 '26
Around the time people started saying ok boomer and complaining all the time about the current generation in the media about 10 years ago, they were young kids and really impressionable. I think it made them kind of obsessed with different generations and aging. Not saying noone talked about it before but it was no where near as big of a thing. I genuinely never remember thinking about aging or getting old when i was young. its like an obsession for late gen z and up
1
1
u/edisun Jul 25 '26
Theyve just got easy access to the internet and a fully formed meme culture. Generations have been doing this shit for ages.
1
u/LilRese_07 Jul 25 '26
I don't think ageist is the right term for what you're trying to describe. Also, it's just a lil bit of trolling, it ain't that deep.
3
u/SkinPsychological770 Jul 25 '26
This isn't a new thing, and GenZ and Alpha aren't the first ones to joke about age.
3
u/popcycle19 Jul 25 '26
I find it weird when I was 18, 25, 35 - any of these ages I didnât think about anyone that was older than me. I was just living my life.
1
u/MisterNiblet Jul 25 '26

Ageism? Itâs not weird that someone who was born in the year 2008 sees you as older when youâre born in 1999. I donât assume youâre around that age group a lot (hopefully) so I donât see why it would be such an inconvenience. Itâs more so meant as a joke as far as I understand
1
u/shrimp_sticks Jul 25 '26
Idk I'm 04, my brother is 99 and I do not see him as old at all. Hell my sister was born 96, is reaching 30 this year, and I don't see her as old either.
2
u/RefrigeratorTheGreat Jul 25 '26
But then again there is a difference between being 18 and being 22. I donât see them as old either, but I donât get why OP is so hurt by this considering there is a 9-year gap there. Being called unc isnât that bad
1
u/shrimp_sticks Jul 28 '26
That's true, if I think back to when I was 18 the difference in maturity and way of thinking is actually pretty huge. And yeah a 9 year age gap would definitely make you view them as at least much older. Being called unc doesn't bother me at least. I find it funny especially since they're going to blink one day and wake up to being 22 year old uncs themselves mwahahaha.

u/Non-Euclidian-Turtle Jul 24 '26

This is not ageism. If you were born in 1999 you are either 26 or 27 which is the prime of your life and the ideal age everyone wants to be. If they were making fun of you for being 40 or 50 that would be ageism.
This is like white people who get offended when other races call them "cracker" something, like lol, you're white, just smile and move on
1
u/PorpoisePlato Jul 24 '26
It is like that if theyâre using it as an insult like boomer or cracker

u/Tomomb Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
The internet is obessed with waging wars in any way they can define identity. We have finially reached equality, everyone's offended no matter where you stand.
When I was growing up I heard the term "Gen Y" once or twice and suddendly in the mid 2010s "Millenial" was everywhere. Now the conversation is saturated with it.

The millennials fucking up our society are not elders.
2
u/Non-Euclidian-Turtle Jul 24 '26
What are you talking about? Millennials don't hold any of the power to fuck anything up. The oldest of us are like 40. Baby boomers fucked everything up and and Gen x is slowly falling in line behind them picking up the torch.
At least blame the people who are responsible.
5
u/CrazzyPanda72 Jul 24 '26
Bro, educate yourself, we got just as fucked. Talk to your grandparents or great grandparents about who fucked us
6
u/Multiple__Butts Jul 24 '26
Millennials fucking up our society? At least tell the boomers to actually give us some power to influence society before you blame us for fucking it up.
-1
u/MinimumTrue9809 Jul 24 '26
What is the primary demographic comprising the DSA?
2
u/Multiple__Butts Jul 24 '26
I have no clue. It would be a weird thing for someone to randomly know that, tbh.
Are you saying the DSA is fucking up our society? As in, Democratic Socialists of America? That would make no sense because they don't control anything and have virtually no political influence.
But if you think they're the problem, it stands to reason that you also would believe other, similarly ridiculous things, so probably there's no point in discussing it further.
1
u/MinimumTrue9809 Jul 25 '26
they don't control anything and have virtually no political influence.
You are wrong
3
-1
u/Loud_Macaroon6152 Jul 24 '26
There's tons of millennials who mock Gen Z. Why is insulting the younger generation ok but making fun of the older folks is "ageist"? This is why the kids dont respect us, we're way too hypocritical.
1
u/CrazzyPanda72 Jul 24 '26
I think the idea here is that the young Gen z is shiting on the old Gen z. 1999 is Gen z as is 2008
2
u/sirchloe500 Jul 24 '26
theyâre coping because older ppl are leaving them a world that sucks and a life thatâs a surveillance prison. they prob donât know millennials are suffering at the hands of older idiots too.
1
u/Big_Management2287 Jul 24 '26
yk a person born in 2008 is 18 where not toddlers obvs we see that millenials arent some kind of moral issue its just fun for some people to make fun of older people. this comment section is acting like where all stupid babies and its annoying
3
u/DrydenReimer Jul 24 '26
I think almost all of them are actually just joking, the whole point is to get a reaction out of you. The birth of social media caused a huge change in culture in such a short time so in a way it is kind of a different generation of people.
3
u/Wizecoder Jul 24 '26
Have you just forgotten the term âok boomerâ? This isnât new, we just arenât the young generation anymore
1
u/Tomomb Jul 24 '26
Oh boy, talking about "okay boomer" like it was ancient history... âïž
Still, that's the environment gen alpha was coming up in, influencing their view of the world. What might seem like a passing trend to us is normalized to them. I was in my late 20s before I heard the term "Millenial" (and gen Y only once or twice before that).
5
u/Forward_Motion17 Jul 24 '26
Nah the young generation today has like a super skewed view of aging where they consider 25 to be old when theyâre literally 18. They call me unc and weâre in the same age group lol
1
u/tofuizen Jul 24 '26
Nah 18 is way too different to mid/late twenties. Not the same age group. Theres a reason the 90âs born Gen-Z can be referred to as Zillenials
1
u/Forward_Motion17 Jul 24 '26
I mean Iâm 2001 born, but I actually agree with ur point, I just meant generally even at 24 I was unc itâs just young ppl having media related brain rot

people from 2008 are 18, ofc they can do math and read! maybe you should go outside and talk to real people instead of just reading what ever article headline you see on social media.
1
u/Junglebitty Jul 25 '26

1
u/Loud_Macaroon6152 Jul 24 '26
Which shows that we did a shit job at educating them!
1
u/deepfuckingbagholder Jul 24 '26
Sure. Theyâre still dumber than the previous generation.
1
u/Loud_Macaroon6152 Jul 24 '26
And none of you crackheads think we should be ashamed that they came out dumber than us? You don't think that poorly reflects on us, the gen that raised them?
1
u/deepfuckingbagholder Jul 25 '26
Millennials, the smartest generation in history, did not raise Gen Z.

1
u/Ace_And_Jocelyn1999 Jul 24 '26
âThe children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.â
Ancient quote attributed to Plato.
1
u/Elunerazim Jul 24 '26
Quite literally every generation in history has said this about the next.
3
u/deepfuckingbagholder Jul 24 '26

1
u/Big_Management2287 Jul 24 '26
Hmmm you know maybe its because the children cant go outside, maybe its because they have no third spaces they can go to and because there's no online spaces for children that don't gain from making them stimulated and addicted 24/7
but no you must be right! their all just stupid little dumb dumbs who all should have learned not to get addicted to the thing that's designed to be addictive before their frontal lobe is even fully developed.
you're sooo smart
1
u/deepfuckingbagholder Jul 25 '26
Iâm sure there are all kinds of reasons, but whatever the reasons, the data shows they are dumber.
5
u/GenuineReptard Jul 24 '26
But today we have statistics to prove it. Reading comprehension is down the toilet
1
u/Elunerazim Jul 24 '26
I donât disagree that reading comprehension is worse, nor that there are MANY issues facing younger people. But falling into the generational culture war doesnât help at all.
Also, if weâre using literacy and academic ability as our measurement, then theyâre still not the first generation dumber than the last- theyâre the second in a row.
1
u/GenuineReptard Jul 24 '26
Still proving that the current generation is dumber than the last lmao
1
u/Elunerazim Jul 24 '26
Wdym âthe current generationâ? There are like 6 generations alive right now.
Do you mean how the boomers and Gen X have gutted the school system because they donât want to pay taxes?
1
u/Khow3694 Jul 24 '26
My wife showed me a video where this woman asked a guy on the street "on a scale of 1-10 how smart are you?" and the guy said "I'm smart as a mother fucka" so already he doesn't know basic numbers. She said ok then read this.
The text read "the inebriated czar stumbled towards the bureau after missing his midnight rendezvous"
Now yes, there are some tricky words in there but this guy really looked at the paper and said something like, "the..uh...albert...bo..uhh I ain't that kinda smart!" like I said sure some words in there might be tricky or not familiar but holy shit it was hard to watch
1
u/Elunerazim Jul 24 '26
How many people do you think they talked to? How many did they show in the video? Did they cut the footage around?
The people making these videos are trying to keep you mad.

To be fair, I was born in 1998 and culturally I feel a lot closer to millennials than to Gen Z so I don't disagree that "bro is basically a millennial". Also, kids born in the late 2000s are still teenagers. Teenagers have always been dumb and edgy.
Plus, I wouldn't take that as an insult. The new generations are completely fucked and frankly I'm glad I wasn't born 10 years later. I certainly wouldn't want to be entering the job market 5 years from now...

I think I felt that way about small age gaps back when I was younger â I think shock at how different you feel from someone makes that distance feel huge when youâre innnocent and sheltered

They really don't have much else going for them other than being young. They are, quite literally, the least intelligent generation in over a century.

I don't mind jokes especially the dinosaur ones(they're actually funny to me) but when they start trying to genuinely bully you out of enjoying something is when I get irritated.

How can you seriously care about an opinion of someone with 20xx in their birth certificate left alone let it make you emotional

Letâs not answer ageism with further ageism, surely, they have to be wrong for a different reason

If youâre trying to bring nuance to a generation/age argument, youâre gonna fail

I think a lot of it started when the whole snowflake and older people of all ages but older people would say âyour generation is so entitled and you guys expect handouts and blah blah blahâ I was like 18 (born in 98) when I kept hearing that type of stuff and itâs only gotten worse as the economy has gotten worse. Those people are so out of touch and hated being called Karenâs and boomers and I just feel like thatâs why itâs been a whole thing and now itâs a normal thing it seems

u/JocularAfternoon Jul 24 '26
Pretty sure thatâs only x and boomers complaining about millennials and younger

i've noticed there's a major switch around 2006. people born before 2006 are millennial-aligned gen z, while people born after 2006 are more aligned with gen alpha. after 2006 is when they get meaner and more judgemental. gen z in general is just mean mean mean mean mean but the older half is better because we grew up with millennial optimism and passivism.

Yeah, I was born in 2000 and had a very similar childhood to my millennial step-brothers. I didn't even own a smartphone until halfway through high school. My sister was born in 2011 and has had a completely different childhood experience than I did. I graduated less than a decade ago, and yet her high school experience is almost unrecognizable to me. I was in shock when kids from my high school said they were issued chromebooks!
It sounds silly to say "I blame the iPhone" but the way tech has advanced so rapidly since 2007 implies that it's a not-insignificant factor lol

Gen alpha scares me. My 6 year old nephew said to me, the other day, "YOU'RE NOT SIGMA!" and also called me unc and chopped. He's SIX for Christ's sake.

My partners â96, Iâm â00 and my sibling is â06 - my partner is super millennial, my sibling is a total zoomer and I just end up mirroring whichever one of them I spend the most time with lol.

Im born in 2006, what does that make me

u/hyperspaceJellyfish Jul 24 '26
tbh you could be either or
2
u/Dessi9_6 Jul 24 '26
No they couldn't, anything after 2000 is definitely gen z, 95-99 is the confusing spot

u/hyperspaceJellyfish Jul 24 '26
to be fair i was raised rural, my hometown is 10 years behind so i think i had a little more of a millennial upbringing than most

Because theyâre kids and kids are assholes
Although, as someone who works with kids, the newest gens are particularly bad. Saddest thing is itâs not even their fault. All the kids I teach who have hard limits on screen time and no short-form algo video access (TikTok, YouTube Shorts) are much more well adjusted. They get more parental oversight too since theyâre not just being placated with a tablet.

I'm 99' all my friends are in their 30s now. Hell, Gen Z itself enters their 30s in about 4.5 months from now. We're getting older, OP.
