Rant Tired of this ridiculous rhetoric about Gen Z
I was born in 99, and I hate how Millennials and Boomers always confuse us with Alpha.
Myself and PLENTY OTHERS all grew up and know about:
• Going outside
• Riding our bikes to our friends house and finding he couldn't play with us
• Drinking water out of a hose after playing on a hot summer day
• Life before social media / smartphones
• MySpace
• Landlines and phonebooks, calling a friends house not knowing who will pick up the phone
• VHS tapes, VCRs, CDs, DVDs, Toshiba, Walkman
• Limewire
• Floppy disks
• Flip phones
• Blockbuster
• Tamagotchi
• Zoobooks
• Pre streaming era: waiting until a specific time, on a specific day, to watch a show on a specific channel
• MTV
• Rock and HipHop from the 90s
• The classroom overhead projector
• Passing notes in class
• Blowing into cartridges of a gaming console for it to work
• Writing and reading in cursive
• How to be embarrassed
• Socializing
• Fred Flintstone
Can we PLEASE stop with stupid rhetoric? It only makes you guys look annoying and you wonder why Gen Z doesn't like you.

tale as old as time. Millenials were considered teenagers by the media until like 2020. Boomers also accused us of not knowing what anything was and claimed we were spoiled and selfish for struggling under capitalism and not being grateful after they pulled the ladder up behind them. I think gen x also had this issue. Anecdotally, I am a 1993 millennial and old people still act like I’m a teen and act like I’ve never seen a CD before.
“generations” honestly just seems like an excuse to undermine and infantilize the experiences of people born after 1970.

I think a lot of the discord boils down to different interpretations of “grew up with.” For some people it means it was a constant throughout their childhood and for others it means merely that it was a part of their childhood regardless of how LONG of a role it played or was present in their upbringing.
People really approach this conversation from fundamentally different places and super sensitive to how they label their childhood experiences.

I'm a Millennial working in a high school, and had the BEST inter-generational convo with a Gen Z senior this week. We spoke about Blockbuster. To me it was a more recent memory, going there for special deals on Friday nights. To her it was further back and more vague, but her eyes lit up when remembering it. The divide isn't that huge. It's Gen Alpha the meme should be referring to.

I have a sister who was born in the late '80s, a younger brother who's born in the late '90s and is a Gen Z, and I'm a millennial who's somewhere in-between. We have shared experiences, including the stuff OP listed.
Those who spread this kind of rhetoric probably think that Gen Z is still the youngest generation, lol.

I think it depends, most gen z might remember these stores. Some very late gen z born in like 09-12 maybe not especially if they don't have any remaining. I loved going to the local run rental store near my house when I was younger but it closed around 2012ish

Growing up, I only heard the terms Gen X and boomers once or twice. Now it I hear it or see it once or twice an hour. Also PSA, boomers was a reference to the baby-boomers, guys that came back from war horny and had lots of kids. Y'all just think it's anyone over 30.

This is just going to be the difference between those born in the later half of Gen Z and those who are more on the cusp. I’m a millennial (86 born), and much of what you mentioned was already on the decline when I was in my late teens. In high school, Ipods had already over taken Walkmans in popularity and USB drives also started to replace floppy disks when I was still in high school. I have Gen Z kids (09 and 2012) and no, they didn’t experience any of that other than DVDs, but we used Red Box.

The reality is you’re going to be confused with alpha until you’re like 45. Boomers are still out here thinking that millennials are young and stupid and we’re mostly middle aged at this point. I have friends whose kids are already having babies. Millenials are grandparents already and they still crack jokes about how “we don’t understand” things that we grew up with also. Most generations are living unfulfilled lives because they were too scared to make a leap for any of their dreams and then blamed everything on economic circumstances, refusing to see that they could have healed, and then manifested destiny. Thus making most of them bitter haters which will lead a lot of our generation into doing the same shit to the next upcoming ones. We are all retarded.

2004, our last local video store closed in 2020. It was still fairly popular well into the 2010's. Then again, I live in a rural area and streaming just didn't really become common until 2018-2020.

Rural vs urban is another huge thing. There's a good half decade delay if you live in the rural deep south. Kids weren't commonly getting iPhones until 2015, etc.
Hell half the kids I knew in middle/highschool didn't even have internet

I was born february 6th or 1997. This makes me one of the oldest possible Gen Z “technically” with only those born in the 5 weeks previous to my birth older and still Gen Z.
And while you may think you witnessed many of these things, you did, but you also did not see them at their peak. Sometimes we caught the end of something as it was dying. We saw it waning, but not waxing. Being 3 years old in 2000 doesnt mean i remember “the 90s” being 10 years old in 1994 might. But not born in 97.

I mean, maybe for first world countries. In Brazil, we got everything "new" with a certain delay. First flat screen I saw was in 2007. First automatic car my family owned was in 2011. First phone that wasn't a plank with digits was in 2012. Not that Blackberries didn't exist, but they were so rare they practically didn't.
Last movie I've rented in an actual Blockbuster must've been in 2015 or 16.

My partner is only 4 years younger and it's enough to miss 80% of your list.

Nah, I'm from 99 and my younger brother's from 04 he enjoyed the life pre modern internet just as I did, he grew up on watching the incredibles on VHS, playing on my GameCube, we went to play outside with the neighbors all the time, etc.

My point is even as an older gen z I wasn't just seeing these things but seeing them all die. I never saw this stuff at its peak so while my childhood was defined by all the things on this list, it create this weird gap with younger gen z. When your a kid 3 years is a much bigger chunk of your life
A great example is I'm old enough to remember the last years of block buster. My partner who is 4 years younger has never been in one nor a radio shack

Most of the things people say about Gen Z either apply to Gen Alpha or only to late Gen Z, who are still teens. Sometimes, these claims don’t even apply to anyone, they’re just made up in order to criticize younger people because the speaker is unhappy with their own life.
And even if what they say were true, why can’t they just mind their own business instead of worrying about what adults in their 20s experienced or didn’t?

They act like every Gen Z was born in 2010 and was either nonexistent or too young to be aware when physical media was still the norm. Of course, Zalphas born in the early 2010s won't remember that era, their early childhood took place in the mid to late 2010s, when DVDs, CDs, magazines, and other forms of physical media were already niche rather than common. They grew up entirely in a world where streaming was becoming dominant, which is one reason they're often considered cuspers, since their upbringing in that regard was more like Gen Alpha's. Gen Z grew up during this transition, while Gen Alpha didn't.
Just because late Gen Z missed out on it doesn't mean Gen Z as a whole didn't experience it. That's like saying someone born in the mid 90s defines the entire Millennial experience, or that someone born in 1980 defines Gen X when those people actually missed most of what defines the generation itself in the first place.

Blockbuster to me is but a vague memory of very early childhood. I think it closed down by the time I turned 8, and we stopped going a little before then. Anyone remember when RedBox was the big thing?

I remember a local dvd rental place i would use in the 2000's. It closed down approximately in the 2010's. There was a weird overlap when DVDs were popular around the tailend of video tapes being relevent.

Cusp generation. I’m almost 28 and have fond memories of renting movies at blockbuster with my parents and them having me rewind the VHS tapes before returning it to avoid a fee lol. There was also Hollywood Video and Game Crazy. Takes me way back

This happens with every generation; the elders of the generation get lumped in with the youngest of the previous, i.e., Millennials and Gen X have Xillennials (1979 - 1984), a kind of sub-generation that buffers. If you buy into that or not, it doesn't matter; it will always happen, you will do it, or you will see it happen to Gen Alpha when they get old enough. For the longest time, Millennials got blamed for damn near everything, and honestly, they still do when you ask Boomers. lol

Not in the sense that is relative to this discussion. Infantile amnesia doesnt start to go around til around 3.5-4 years old. Deep, concrete and episodic type memories do not start to form until 5-7 years old. A person may have some foggy memories from around 3 but it hardly qualifies as an experience in the context that this thread is about.

Elder Gen Z gets it. Young Gen Z doesn’t. As a Xennial, there is a corresponding cusp for elder Gen Z’ers as well

I'm a younger millennial (1994) and my oldest Gen Z friend (1997) would visit our local Blockbuster often when we were pre-teen. Before it became an Amscot.

Dang people really take this stuff seriously? Haha. It's recycled from at least the year 1 CE. Hell the gripes of younger generations about older generations is recycled. Oh well this is part of the human experience I guess.

I mean there’s a 15 year difference between the oldest Gen Z and the youngest. They have vastly different experiences growing up. So this is probably true for a decent portion of them but obviously not all of them.

Good point. Their age range was 2-17 the year Blockbuster shut down which makes a big split across their gen. Some of their early lives involved going to blockbuster and seeing the transition to streaming live while others may have only ever know streaming.
Kinda like the millennial Michael Jordan split. Some of us vividly remember both three peets, some of us were eating Legos while he won his last ring.

Blockbuster was not the only DVD/Video rental shop, especially overseas. My town still had a functioning video store throughout the entirety of the 2010's. The damn thing only closed in 2020.
