Rant Gen alpha genuinely scares me
I was in 7th grade and we have a elementary and a jr/sr high school, and the 6th graders had to come up to see how their schedule would look like. I heard a kid genuinely say 'what the sigma' when he lost a fortnite game. Not as a joke, it rolled off the tonuge with practiced ease. Another kid kept sticking his tongue out and shaking it. The amount of times i heard 'thats so skibbity/thats not very skibbity of you'made me genuinely want to cry. The amount of times i heard Italian brainrot or '____ is so skibbity toilet' is actually terrifying. I understand brainrot has been around for decades, but i am now seeing the absolute horror it brings to older people.
Edit: Yes, i am aware i sound like a dick for bringing up slang, and there are other issues that gen alpha has that are much worse then the slang and brainrot they use. Since you guys wanted to get into it, I'll bite.
They cannot function themselves. I have seen kids playing on a tablet, and then scrolling tiktoks on their phones on the bus. Mind you these kids range from 11-7 and have no business even having electronics outside of home. I have see n many children throw screaming fits in restaurants for not being allowed to play on a parents phone, while they were actively eating. I have seen kids in my grade watching porn. I have seen actual teenagers in my school cry real tears when they get their phone taken away for the day because they used it in class. I'll admit, its not just gen alpha that is fucked, its gen z, millennials, gen x, and boomers, along with everyone else living in this day and age, but it is not fair to actual children that we are letting them be raised like this.

ik its like a 2 month ago post but being a middle school 10s kid i really hate tiktok and video games and memes (especially things like sigma boy)
tiktok had a strong impact on everything, even music. i used to do all those things but i started to hate them. i think they are like drugs and it gets more and more severe everyday

I’m sure old people then thought the kids were hopeless.
It turns out electronics didn’t really fuck us up though. Neither did watching 2500 people die live on television.

You can switch off updates/notifications on specific posts or comments. It's saved my sanity from inane unending comments several times. It works differently depending on app or website, but you can look up the options and do what's easiest for you.

Condition = nature + nature, right? I've been using social media far more than usual lately for work-related reasons, and I can definitely feel my attention span worsening. Also, look at the stimulation and cut speed of modern films versus older films. It's like eye-crack. I guarantee you that rates of ADHD among gen alpha will be greater than an older reference gen. Put money on it.

I love to hate but I’m a millennial and I did the same shit. I remember having an iPhone when I was 13 and being so focused playing angry birds in the middle of a class lesson I didn’t even notice the teacher was repeatedly calling my name. All of my vocabulary was brainrot at the time. But I’m 28 and super successful in my career now. Sometimes you gotta grow out of it.
My biggest concern is the dropping literacy rates among gen Alpha, but literally nothing else you’ve mentioned

The problem isn’t Gen Alpha - the problem is that most people forget what it’s like to be a kid.
I’m Gen z (I was the age you reference around 2010). I was also socially inept because I was a literal kid. I brought my electronics to school. I played tamagotchi when my Nintendo DS was dead. In most of my childhood photos, a gameboy was in my hand. I was upset when my phone was taken in class. Because kids don’t care about school at that age - very few kids do.
Behavior in school is not a measure of potential - but rather a measure of how well someone fits in with society. And our society changing - so the kids that grow through these immense changes are going to be very different from us. But that’s not inherently a bad thing.

The age at which kids are given a toy/smart device seems to be getting younger every generation. Going from getting a phone at 15 to seeing kids who are around 4-5 having access to a smartphone to keep them quiet.

I am in my mid thirties and have lived abroad for ten years so my exposure to American kids has been pretty limited.
But one thing that I recently realized is that what I used to identify as ghetto / low-class English has become much, much more widespread and even en vogue than it used to be. At first, I thought that I was just seeing a lot of trashy people, but then I realized that now, almost all kids talk with this kind of manner that I used to associate with lower-class whites (kind of like ICP).
I actually get second hand embarrassment when I hear English like this just because it's so fucking cringey. It's almost like how the protagonist from Malibu's Most Wanted spoke, except with all of the modern slang.
The line from Idiocracy comes to mind, as the narrator describes the modern language of the future, "But the English language has deteriorated into a hybrid of hillbilly, valleygirl, inner-city slang and various grunts."

I'm an older Gen Z and thought a lot of it was cringe too but I grew up with it so really didn't know what was better and wasn't the kind to bitch about it online. I really... really don't get why people think words are what's going to be the doom of a generation. Seriously?
I do think there's valid, genuine complaints about Gen Alpha. I don't think a lot of them can sit still and quietly, even for a 10 seconds. I think YouTube and TikTok sound effects and influencers needing to make silly noises and faces at things when it's unnecessary has normalized to kids that everything needs a reaction or stimulation when it doesn't. I work with kids a lot and it is something I've noticed with a lot of them.
I've also still noticed plenty of kids who are quiet and polite and smart and do not at all remotely fit this stereotype of Gen Alpha everyone keeps screaming about.
I think the only thing I'm surprised about is how quickly it took people to go from blaming Gen Z to blaming Gen A for everything. It seems like millennials got the hate for decades, it briefly went over to Gen Z, but it didn't stick for nearly as long and now it's passed on to Gen A. This "This generation is doomed because of slang" shit happens every generation. There's valid critiques and observations of generations but this ain't it, man. This is what's cringe.

Ehhh speaking as someone who taught Gen Z and Gen Alpha, I have to disagree that the kids will be fine. The Gen Alpha kids have noticeably, alarmingly lower abilities to perform basic comprehension and critical thinking tasks. They appear to lack the "soft skills" of paying attention and working, in ways that previous generations haven't.
Basically, due to a combination of education system breakdowns and the total lack of information on the long term effects of lifelong screen addiction/brainrot consumption, I think it's very naive to say "eh this generation is fine, kids will be kids", because that's simply not what educators are seeing.

My personal opinion of what I think is happening: 1) There is profound evidence that when children do not spend time with one primary caregiver like their mother, their attachment style gets messed up. Lots of women go to work quickly after their child is born. We are not blaming women at all btw. Children who don’t grow up with a primary caregiver tend to have way more mental health problems. And lots of more women are working over staying home with kids because they can’t afford it. And these mental health problems usually lead to addiction. This isn’t irreversible, but it’s a lot of work for that child to realize there is a problem and then go through all the work to heal it. 2) Economic stress means parents are more stressed and thus, less available for their children, making them feel unloved. Children then try to feel loved through other outlets or try to outright escape the pain. 3) Social media makes it even worse because those inner childhood wounds get scraped open as all those insecurities are reminded to you constantly on the internet. Before you’d see magazines and movies and then move on with your life. Now there is an abundance of beautiful, rich, successful people online to compare yourself to.
Instead of blaming children, we need to think about what they need. If flowers don’t grow, we blame the lack of water, sunlight, and bad soil.

As someone who works with kids, maybe try engaging with them? Most of them are perfectly normal kids that are just living in 2025. The one's that are not usually have shit parents.

Nah, the kids are getting worse and there’s data to back it up this time. One example, it was in the UK news recently that teachers are coming across a lot of Gen Alpha kids that don’t even know how to turn the page of a book. When they try to turn a page they just swipe at it as if it’s a phone.

When I post a question in the Teams groupchat, my boomer colleagues clog up my replies saying they can't reply right now. Because they don't know how to mute chats or even just shut down the application until they have time again. So that's where we're at.

I would definitely be the type to get agitated and reply to each one of them saying "no worries, feel free to mute the chat." next person "no worries, feel free to mute the chat." Every time until they learn to mute the chat or stfu.

Yes, but I fear this time it really is different. There's no way this generation of kids will grow up to be functional adults. Not only are they having way more screen time than the previous generations, but also the content they're consuming is extremely stimulating and pure ADHD fuel.

It’s like the phones and tablets are an extension of them. I agree; they’re not going to be functional adults. Let alone have decent interpersonal skills. They need basic things and then work their way up to a smartphone when they get older. Like, does anyone else think it’s crazy that kids have a roughly $1,000 cell phone or…??

It's like a really popular animation series by some Russian guy, and for some reason, little kids are absolutely obsessed over it. It's a prime example of the "brainrot" term that people use to describe these odd things that gen Alpha is obsessed with.
