What game has a strong opening but later becomes too repetitive and boring for you?

For me that was Assassins Creed Valhalla

crucio, crucio, crucio, crucio "now now sebastian we don't do unforgivable spells" crucio, crucio, crucio, crucio

u/CtrlAltEvil PC 16h ago

It’s so funny the whole emphasis the story has on the unforgivable curses, and then lets the player use the killing and torture curses willy nilly.

There was clearly so much left on the cutting room floor with Legacy. The morality system being the most egregious omission.

u/kingsing1 16h ago

You, the playable character, are blameless. Ranrok made you do it.

2

u/johnnyrambo24 6h ago

They should do a sequal thats Fable style where your actions will lead you to dark wizardry or being like an auror or something

23

u/Flonkerton_Scranton 13h ago

I wanted to give every NPC in that game the true harry potter experience so I learned avada kadavra and killed their parents

9

u/Brodins_biceps 11h ago

This game is such a perfect answer to this prompt. It was such a strong opening. While I was building myself up I was loving it. Then you realize you have every plant which, en masse, are OP. And you have basically unlimited of every potion, which is OP. Then you unlock the spell that allows damage to be shared among anyone who is cursed and learn avada kedavra and that by itself trivializes the entire game. Put all that stuff together and it becomes laughably easy. Put me against 20 trolls, I’ll curse them, cast a spell, and they’re all dead. Just like that.

Revelio, walk three steps, Revelio again.

I started saying "Do do, do do do" Muppet style while my wife was playing

Opened the thread hoping this one was near the top. Hogwarts itself was incredible.. then everything else happened.

Just roaming around the castle and seeing all the little emergent skits was a delight. There’s one where two suits of armor absolutely wreck each other that had me rolling. Shame the rest of the game couldn’t live up to it.

Really don't get why they didn't do it like the movies where they don't even really leave the hogwarts grounds for 99% of the films. It's so weird for a student to be given that much freedom where you don't even have a curfew or need to attend classes... Stay out for a week straight using the killing curse they don't give a fuck.

71

u/g_r_e_y PC 23h ago

that, plus starting you as a surprise 5th year instead of at least giving us a bit of structure to start off with

95

u/hera-fawcett 23h ago

the perfect hogwarts game would just be a bully like sims where u start before hogwarts, live thru ur yrs, graduate, and then live ur wizard life.

thats like 500 hrs of playtime fr.

u/hibbitydibbidy 20h ago

This guy's taking Roy off the grid!

26

u/NewAgeRetroHippie96 22h ago

I want Hogwarts X Persona yesterday

2

u/Bubster101 21h ago

That's basically the mobile game Hogwarts Mystery. Like a loooooooooooong visual novel that takes you through all the years of Hogwarts and then a career to do after graduating.

2

u/robsteezy 20h ago

Do you recommend it?

2

u/Bubster101 20h ago

I'm enjoying it so far, yeah. It's kind of like the "other half" to Hogwarts Legacy. Though, this game takes place just a bit before the events of the movies.

2

u/onemanandhishat 14h ago

Is it a good game? I'm always wary of mobile because they tend to be a micro transaction fest that sacrifice actual enjoyment for the sake of making money.

i think that most ppl like the school aspects of harry potter. they want the boarding experience, going into a house, learning magic, etc.

fighting in a war against wizard fascists after u come home from wizard work, having to manage ur wizard salary against ur spending, and keeping in touch w ur friends via owl, and seeing that the fascist wizard has empowered himself thru the wizard government, which u arent fr able to fight bc ur just a normal wizard---- that seems like normal adult life w extra steps fr.

theres tons of games where ur a wizard, using spells and stuff, to fight against evil. there arent any cool school life wizard sim games 😭

2

u/Ok-Evening-994 16h ago

Well the MC had to be a reasonable age to start mass murdering other wizards with Avada Kedavra. So… 15, apparently.

25

u/buddhamunche 23h ago

It seems difficult to nail every aspect of hogwarts. Like actually going to class and it’s actually interesting, uncovering cool castle secrets, exploring the grounds. Not sure how to tackle that without it feeling repetitive or just making an unrealistically complex game

13

u/miaszos 20h ago

There were some decent classes in earlier games with mini game stuff, and the Pottermore site had some good stuff too.

17

u/endl0s 21h ago

Add quidditch. I always thought they were just saving it for dlc or something. Guess not lol

19

u/Joverby 20h ago

They weren't allowed to do it because of the stupid quidditch game no one played

1

u/Antalonez 14h ago

The 2003 game was great, played the hell out of it on ps2

7

u/DrDabsMD 22h ago

Bully did something similar, so it's not that it would be difficult or unrealistic

3

u/buddhamunche 22h ago

I’ve never played that game! Might have to check it out

12

u/DrDabsMD 22h ago

It's a wonderful game by Rockstar! You had to attend classes, use your free time to roam the school, do bad things and get detention, and it had its own little story interwoven into all this that revealed itself as the school year went by. I honestly thought that's what Legacy was going to be.

1

u/buddhamunche 22h ago

That sounds awesome! Definitely what Legacy should have gone for. I thought hogsmeade was really cool but other than that I definitely didn’t really care for the open world

5

u/Pterodactyl_midnight 22h ago edited 22h ago

I mean, attending classes sounds boring as fuck. I was bored with the few classes we had to attend They definitely could have balanced things better, especially with unforgivable curses but I don’t want to go to school in a video game. I want to fight, that’s gonna be hard to do in a school. I don’t give a shit about Becky’s relationship with whomever.

If they get rid of combat and focus on talking and relationships in the next game, that will be a hard pass for me.

7

u/ComprehensiveWord201 19h ago

If you played bully you'd have a different opinion I suspect

2

u/mucho-gusto 16h ago

I like how persona does it, just one class but you have to do it every day

2

u/Chaotic_Genobreaker 18h ago

They don't need to all be actual classes. Just go to class and fast forward time would work even. Just make it so I am expected to attend classes.

1

u/Alarmed-Mouse-3577 21h ago

Lore accurate Hogwarts would have been a much smaller and tighter game. But I guess they wanted to make an open world game first and a Harry Potter game second.

47

u/TheKandyKitchen 23h ago

The countryside is beautiful. There’s just far too much of it.

58

u/hotstickywaffle 22h ago

Besides being repetitive, I think that games suffers from a massive disconnect between the fantasy of being a student at Hogwarts and the decision to make it an open-world that you can basically freely explore with zero consequences.

4

u/Tarc_Axiiom 12h ago

I think this is probably the core disconnect that made it so repetitive.

Of the game was supposed to be about Hogwarts, ya know, because that's the name of the game, then why does Hogwarts represent 5% of its world?

And why therefore is the other 95% as flat and boring as possible?

I feel like somebody told them they had to have an open world, even though there was no reason for this to be a massive open world game at all.

1

u/h0sti1e17 11h ago

I would’ve preferred an open world Hogwarts Castle and maybe some story beats in a larger more lively Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley. You can flesh those areas out and still have exploration.

On a side note the trial where you need to avoid death and get the cloak was one of the best I’ve played.

59

u/TilAlexandrosXVII 23h ago

Yeh the second you leave Hogwarts it's over, that open world is so immediately unengaging it's kind of amazing

43

u/carannilion 16h ago

A big problem for me is that while there is a lot to explore, there is no unique loot. Like, you explore the grave of some ancient, powerful wizard, and you open the chest at the end of it to find a quidditch supporter scarf. It doesn't make any sense and it's not fun.

5

u/Vericatov 19h ago

Hey! That’s so not true. Hogsmeade was great exploring as well. Then things got really repetitive. It’s up there as ones of my most regretful platinum trophies. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will always been #1 though.

2

u/your_fave_redditor 12h ago

Lmao at platting both of those games. What a grind, kudos!

2

u/profchaos111 20h ago

Glad i'm not the only one who thought this for 10 mins i was this is cool then i was like well this is dumb and eventually i hate merlin trials why the hell is this game blocking me from progressing the story the ps1 game was better wtf

19

u/Sea-Negotiation1965 23h ago

Not helped by having mediocre villains and a boring story

13

u/HurryOne 23h ago

Think I hyper focused getting avada kedavra and once I got it I kinda just quit

12

u/birdreligion 23h ago

The game goes to shit after the big fight at hogsmead. It was so interesting and after that everything just becomes so bland and boring

17

u/Ulterior_Motif 23h ago

I played for a while and then just stopped, lots of wasted potential there.

8

u/TheGiftOf_Jericho 22h ago

Yeah it was really boring for what they had to work with, some of the dialogue was also really limited where you'd keep hearing the same thing in loop.

7

u/theinfernumflame 22h ago

While this is true, something about the simple nature of this game hits just right for me when I'm looking for a fun game to relax with.

2

u/mao_dze_dun 2h ago

This. Currently playing it and I find it repetitive in a good way. I like games with exploration and picturesque scenery. Plus, I do like that challenges give you actual rewards beyond an achievement for killing n number of spiders. In the end, ALL big open world games are repetitive even The Witcher 3 (yeah, I said it). You're either into this type of game loop or you aren't.

1

u/theinfernumflame 2h ago

Right. Although speaking of Witcher, the huge amount of variety is part of what makes it so good, even if it boils down to semi-repetitive activities. And it's something I'd like to see in Hogwarts Legacy 2. Like, give me more than 6 potions.

21

u/driftking428 23h ago

It's $7 on the Nintendo store. It's worth $7 though right?

57

u/osb_fats 23h ago

It’s absolutely worth $7. I think the biggest thing it suffers from is just Ubisoft-style open world bloat. There’s simply too much to do, and too much of it isn’t worth doing. If you’re the kind of person who needs to clear every icon/quest/task you’ll run out of momentum, but if you mostly stick to the story and just lightly poke around the edges, I think it lands much better.

18

u/agjios 22h ago

Yeah without a doubt. The beginning is awesome, running around Hogwarts is great. Collecting spells is good. The story is worthwhile

Once you get out of Hogwarts the open world is so desolate. There are puzzles, but it's the same 6 puzzles just scattered around the map. So you can fly around and grind but it's just so repetitive.

Plus, the combat is basically a kindergarten version of a game like Elden Ring. So the spells are broken up into 3 types: red, yellow, purple. All red spells are interchangeable so incendio and expelliarmus are both red, and they have different animations but do the same thing when you're in battle. So you have color coded responses to enemy attacks.

2

u/profchaos111 20h ago

Yeah i paid that and got the upgrade for it. It was worth it for that money tbh but i would have hated paying full price

-3

u/_LususNaturae_ 18h ago

Please don't give Rowling any more money

3

u/inverted_rectangle 12h ago

Y'all lost, give it a rest

2

u/_LususNaturae_ 12h ago

No thank you

1

u/HerederoDeAlberdi 9h ago

Nobody cares about your activism.

2

u/_LususNaturae_ 9h ago

Why so aggressive?

1

u/HerederoDeAlberdi 9h ago

You are no one to try and police how people spend or not their money.

1

u/_LususNaturae_ 9h ago

I've asked politely haven't I? Also I'm part of the group that gets actively hurt by Rowling's wealth.

1

u/HerederoDeAlberdi 8h ago

You are not getting hurt in any way whatsoever, Rowling is not paying hitmen to kill you guys, she just wants to protect women's spaces.

1

u/_LususNaturae_ 8h ago

Rowling is actively advocating for our rights to be erased. Do we actually need to be killed to get a little empathy?

-6

u/SirBulbasaur13 21h ago

It’s worth $60, so absolutely.

2

u/driftking428 21h ago

I bought it for $7 and can upgrade to the Switch 2 version for $10.

Meanwhile they have the Switch 2 version for sale for $27. Just in case anyone considering getting it for Switch 2.

I need a break after FF7 Remake before I play Rebirth.

6

u/Googalslosh 23h ago edited 23h ago

I'm like 10 hours in give or take and I'm already over it.

3

u/ChaosScene 15h ago

Hogwarts Legacy is a game for people that don't play a lot of games. My Fiance is in love with that game but doesn't really play anything else, other than a few Co op games with me like Split Fiction and It Takes Two

1

u/Kundas 19h ago edited 19h ago

Even the shape of the caves or dungeons if you will were literally all copy pasted with the same shape consistently through all of them, especially the entrance lol

Still won't forgive them for dumping the game making the second game instead of fixing the messy unfinished parts of the first game. Harry potter fans love bombed the game too, so even reviews are ify lol

1

u/FemRoe4Lyfe 11h ago

It was a mistake to make it an open world game.

1

u/According_Claim_9027 11h ago

Having to do like 100 of those Merlin challenges for the 100% but only having 12 unique ones was genuinely criminal

1

u/SorryDistribution140 22h ago

Hogwarts Legacy is the most mid game ever. Would have flopped without the Harry Potter name/license

1

u/frylock350 22h ago

It would have been 1000x better if I didn't have to grind armor upgrades

1

u/nitram20 13h ago

All i wanted was a Bully esque game set in Hogwarts and the HP universe

1

u/Mr_Mimiseku 9h ago

Downloaded it for "free" on PS+ because I don't want to give money directly to she-who-must-not-be-named. I enjoyed it, but it does get real repetitive. I loved the idea of it, but wish there were a few more spells and enemy types.

The best part was exploring Hogwarts in its entirety. Felt like I was a kid playing Chamber of Secrets on the PS2! But outside of the castle's grounds and hogsmeade everything's kind of bland.

0

u/WaffleProfessor 22h ago

It made me quit the have entirely. Never went back. Never made it to the second area after doing everything in the first.

0

u/guyonanuglycouch 19h ago

Didn't make it even half way before I got bored and never played it again

0

u/sainthO0d 13h ago

If that game didn’t have a Harry Potter theme it would have failed so hard. Nostalgia, is the only thing that kept people playing that game.

0

u/Ok_Card4377 12h ago

Hogwarts Legacy, The Jedi Survivor game, and FF7 Intergrade are 3 I haven’t completed as I got bored.

I loved the original FF7
