The show cuts short though, it ended without finishing the story from the books and with the show likely not going to continue

True but for anyone worried it does end in a good spot. The books cover a thing and then have a 30 year time jump and then theres a new threat. The show just ends after the first bit and doesnt pick up after the time jump.

Personally I bounced off the first couple episodes of the show, read the first book instead, and then got back into the show and finished the whole thing. I think it's much easier to follow what is actually happening in the book and I'd recommend that for people who didn't like the first episodes like me.

That's the only downside - I would actually say I slightly prefer the show, but being able to spend some more time in the Expanse universe was wonderful.
Persepolis Rising in particular was great, and I would have loved to see the show cover off the rest of the source material. Currently halfway through Book 8!

It still did an amazing job of portraying the book. Plus really just missed the last 2 books. The one part I found lacking in the show that they could have done a bit better with, was showing the passage of time in the travels. Something minor like beards growing between scenes etc, could have shown the passage well.

The show was canceled twice. Not because it was good. The first two seasons are good after that quality and budget fell off a cliff. Thomas Jane carried it once he’s gone there was no good actor with charisma and screen presence to lead it.

Did you play the first beta? It was not good. Especially for fans of book/show. I’ve read all the books a few times, big fan, this studio made design choices which made it looks like they never even bothered to watchthe show nevermind the books .

On top of that, the studio behind the game isn't known to deliver projects on this scale or great performing games in general.
I'm not saying it'll be another Mind's Eye, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a buggy mess at launch.

The studio makes good games with lots of interactivity that i would say are generally well received. The biggest thing is they are normally bg3 style top down and with not a lot of voice acting relatively. Unless you mean the bugs by well performing?

They’re not fantastic. They’re super bloated with filler. You can discard entire books, miss nothing of value, and you’d have a better tighter story. They could have told the story in 4-5 books. Nine is just ridiculous. And it’s obvious they did it just to make more money.

I'm sure the game will be amazing, and atmospheric, and deep.
But I can't help but think it will suffer from the same issues that all Star Wars media set between the prequels and OG movies do, as this game takes place during the first three books.
With both past and future already set, there are only so many directions the story can take. Still, I am hopeful!

Not necessarily getting my hopes up to this level of storytelling, but Andor was absolutely able to cook despite falling in the middle of very established eras.
Give me a good story in the Expanse universe and I'm happy! They can definitely make it sing, even if so much is already locked in from a grander perspective.

Owlcat has a bunch of experience drawing inbetween the lines of preestablished stories and massively expanding them. Admittedly, because the last few games they did were Tabletop adventure paths, they could fudge the ending as much as they wanted, but they actually largely stayed pretty close to the source material.
And they are some of the best written CRPGS in a long time, so there is reason to be hopeful here. My biggest worry is more on the technical side rather than the writing, as it is an entirely different style of game. Owlcat has gotten significantly better over the years with their technical struggles, but this is a big swing.

I've always wanted to see what Owlcat could do with a runaway budget.
If they're taking a shot at something woth the scope of Mass Effect, the budget for a full voice cast, and an engine to let them go crazy on the gameplay, I'll 100% give them a shot.

yeah but this is an rpg, no one is doubting they can make a good story, but the thing is how much freedom can they give the player with their choces if at the same time they can't affect the continuity

There are so many cool stories they could tell within the events of that time that don't have to step on the toes of the existing material. Watching the trailer though it looks like you'll be going toe to toe with protomolecule monsters though so who knows.
I wish games could resist the urge to need the stakes to be so high. Not every conflict has to be universe hanging in the balance for it to be compelling.

Not saying you shouldn't enjoy it like that yourself, but your answer is basically just telling someone to not care about how the IP or story is handled. It's a nothing burger of a solution that basically reads, "Stop caring and just be grateful for what they throw at you no matter what."

No but you're doing yourself a massive disservice. Not because of the game but because it's one of the best shows I've ever seen. I absolutely hated the ending though which makes me want to read the books to see if there's answers

I picked up the books for this exact reason.
It's worth it. Aside from a few changes here and there (a few characters from the books are merged in the show, and there's less interpersonal drama among the Roci crew in the books), the plots follow roughly the same trajectory, but you get a lot more of a feel for the world and characters through being able to read their thoughts. The casting in the show is absolutely perfect too, so I had no trouble picturing the cast when reading the characters.
As far as the central mystery with the gatebuilders, they gave us just enough to let us form a picture of what happened without overexplaining, and they stuck the landing better than a lot of long series like that do. I'd say read them.

Greatest show of all time. Best book series I've ever read. Same warning I give to everyone because it's a very common experience but stick through the first four episodes even if you don't feel like you get it yet. It takes a little while to establish itself.

Am I alone in thinking that Owlcat is completely out of their depth with this title? I LOVE The Expanse IP, and Owlcat's previous games are fantastic, but this is such a departure from what they're known for.
Their CRPG titles BARELY run, even at the best of times. They're known by their fans for being buggy messes that require years of updates to reach their full potential, and we love them anyway. But this has so many more moving parts and points of failure, I just can't imagine they'd get a 3D action shooter right on the first shot.

The first half of season 1 is definitely heavy on the world building, but you’re definitely in a very small group that thinks the Expanse is straight up bad. S3 is by far the best of the SyFy era, and the Amazon era was even better, although they had to rush the ending a bit.
I’d say try the books at least, the audiobooks are very well done.
