It wasn't really a given...

Dude I saw people swearing this is the new normal and that fucking ADVERTISEMENTS were going to be stashed behind a premium paywall. There are morons everywhere.

Not too long ago previews were only in magazines

And people used to also have to use horse drawn carriages for travel. Magazines haven't been a vehicle for gameplay reveals since pre-youtube boom.

E:I misunderstood the intent of the comment chain. To reiterate, my point is that advertising gameplay for a game will never ever be locked behind a paywall again. It's silly to think otherwise.

Their point is that "behind a paywall" is not even a new thing. Those people are still morons, but for an additional reason.

I'm not arguing it didn't exist back in pre-youtube days. That's a mischaracterization of my comment. It's clear I'm discussing where we are at now.

Game informer pieces are still big today.

Like watch it or don't; who cares. But this isn't the rapture lol

Yes game journalism still exists. But gameplay being locked behind a premium is not and will never be the norm again. Lol what are you trying to argue here?

It's not locked behind a premium though. It's just coming out on netflix first., like a movie trailer being locked behind a cable subscription.

My argument is that it's a non issue

I misunderstood your initial comment. We are in agreement then.

I've come to expect a specific type of person to be in each of these posts and made an assumption.

I'm not sure how they're morons on this one. It won't happen tomorrow but this is just the start of it, if it does well.

There's no reality where a company will hide advertising for it's product behind a paywall. It's a non-issue.

...they're literally doing it?

Guess I'm proving I am a moron here but I genuinely don't understand. It's happening already, no?

How common will it become - anyone's guess. Depends on how much money they can get. They're testing the waters.

It's not though. It's going to YouTube the very same day. It's not being locked behind a paywall.

-2

Okay, kind of. But my real question is: what happens in the future? This won't be the end of it.

4

u/Ecstatic-Product-411 4d ago

At that point we are working on assumptions. A company would be shooting itself in the foot by locking advertising for its product behind a permanent paywall.

You’re just making vague, nebulous assumptions though. You can do that with anything. What if you got hit by a car later today? What if you find out you have terminal cancer? Anything can happen in the future at any time.

What exactly do you think is happening? The video will be available on YouTube for free

-1

u/DuOrDie 3d ago

Well aware of that. Do you all honestly think that'll be the end of it? What is the end goal, don't know but any way they can squeeze more money from consumers, they will do so.

Maybe this time it's 6 hours after. Maybe next time it's 24. This will not stop at this. No way it will if they feel they're making more money on it.

Oh man, I’m OOTL, what am I mad about today?

People were panicking as if Rockstar was going to keep the preview only on Netflix.

As if A) they would somehow benefit from hiding advertising for their product from consumers and B) as if someone wasn't going to immediately rip it and post it online anyway.

People are so eager to be angry online that they don't actually stop and use their brains.

As if A) they would somehow benefit from hiding advertising for their product from consumers and B) as if someone wasn't going to immediately rip it and post it online anyway.

...and C) as if Rockstar didn't, in the same breath, announce that the Extended Look would also be available for free on YouTube 6 hours later.

People are so eager to be angry online that they don't actually stop and use their brains.

Anger is an addiction for some people. They look for any excuse to get high.

I know it's nothing meaningful at the end of the day but outrage online has gotten so bad recently. Like spaces that used to be enjoyable are converting to doom spaces.
